It would be an understatement to say that I was not disappointed leaving the Marist campus last week. I had a good feeling the we'd pick up our first road W. We laid an egg.
We looked tight and inexperienced, especially when it came to shooting. I was shocked when driving away from campus and listening to the local radio wrap up to hear that we had actually outrebounded the Red Foxes. It sure didn't seem that way as an eye witness.
Marist had good guard play, moved the ball very well and had two good outside shooters and a good small forward. But we did not defend well at all.
Winning on the road requires confidence and the "Catch-22" for this group is that they are going to have to gut out a road win to gain that confidence.
Haven't perused all the posts since the Pughkeepsie Pit Stop, but I don't recall anyone mentioning Ivan's injury. I understand that he had his knee scoped in November. He went down hard in the first half at Marist and was carted off to the locker room right before half. Anyone know his status? I thought we'd see him spell Williams more and more to grab some boards and play some defense going forward.
Relph clearly was rusty with his shot and needs time to get his "game legs" back. But you can see when he is on the floor that he wants to lead this team. His ball handling is superior. I think that when he's back to full strength that he and Diggs should be the starting backcourt.
Looking at tonight, seems that we can pick up a W if we can contain their top scorer.
Need to get this win tonight to pick up that elusive road confidence.
Happy New Year to all!
PS - my son got me a GREAT Christmas present. He bought a Bob Lanier replica Bona jersey on Ebay and, through the assistance of a divine connection, had it signed by the "Big Cat" himself. AWESOME.
