So I'll start with the positive. Well, it is hard to remember any positives other than we started our strong and it seemed we were poised to run the Roadrunners out of the gym. We have an 8 point lead about halfway into the first half and everything seemed to be going our way. But three consecutive misses a turnover, another turnover and suddenly we were down one. At this point the wind seemed to be taken from our sails and we couldn't rebound, we threw the ball away...our shots rimmed around and fell out and we slowed down. You can't take it away from UTSA, they are quick and they play 10 deep.
We were down to 9 players and that's calling on Tyler Relph who has yet to get his game legs or his wind. After two minutes up and down the court, he's winded and this leads to a turnover. I can't recall the numbers, but I think he was about 0-8 from the field, most of his shots clanging off the front of the rim. Our rebounding disappeared and Paul Williams seemed to be lumbering up and down the court. I don't know what is wrong with AJ Hawkins, but he's lost his sparked and Pat Lotin's confidence has evaporated. He had open looks and hesitated on the shot, opting to pass.
Our passes were slow and telegraphed, the Roadrunners sped around the court and we struggled to stay with them. We opened the second half with a spurt, went cold again and then the Roadrunners exploded up and down the court, up and down, up and down. The Bonnies were left steps behind every play. Our big guys, Lee and Williams were outside and out of position...no one left to rebound...our shooters launched what appeared to be good shots only to see them rim out or clang back to the spot of the shot. We were terrible in following up our shots and the Roadrunners limited us to one and out.
All in all, we seemed winded, disinterested and outplayed.
There wasn't much the coach could do...he substitute Williams with Fox - a foul follows. He substituted Dunston for Hawkins and we throw the pass away...substitute Relph for Diggs and we miss the shot...substitute Lotin for Lee and more of the same. Everyone was out of sync, no combination was working.
This is the sixth game I've now seen the Bonnies play and everyone has figured it out...double team Smith and you cut off our scoring head...put a big body on Lee and push him out of the rebounding post...attack Diggs at the half court line and you limit his ability to penetrate and pass. Until Hawkins or Lotin regain their shooting touch defenses are falling back and challenging them to shoot. Williams is a monster on the boards for the first 12 minutes of each half and then he's exhausted.
Oh, Diggs twisted his ankle about midway in the second half and was limping through the remainder of the game. We are down to really 7 healthy players with Relph still trying to work himself into shape, Isiah Carson has a torn groin and is probably out for the remainders of the season, Ivan is out for the season and will undergo knee surgery and Tyler Benson is still a week or longer away from resuming full practice with a severe ankle sprain. Finally, the walk on, Perry (?) broke his foot in the pregame warmups in our first game of the season and is out. At the moment there aren't enough healthy players to hold a full practice.
