Ideally it would be nice while students are away to play horrible teams like fordham, save the better teams when we can actually have "home" advantage.... Or move them to Rochester...

^ I do not believe the schools have any control over conference scheduling.

Dayton not only had quicker players, with better shooting ability, but they showed a lot of basketball IQ and were very, very well coached. And that isn't even taking into account their defense which smothered us. They had an open shot literally every time down the floor and we hardly ever had an open shot. How are you going to beat that? Recruit better players with good basketball IQ and coach them better. Yeah, I know, Olean is a very tough place to recruit to (paraphrasing Schmidt) but this philosophy of bringing in JUCO's and marginally decent players is not sound. It would appear that this staff has serious difficulty judging talent. Add to that an offense that is so complex that it causes hesitation, or overthinking, and takes away any innate athleticism that a player may have. Add to that the lack of someone on the staff that has any knowledge of teaching solid defensive fundamentals and you have a recipe for middle to lower in the pack results. Well, I just disagree with that. Here is the example: Dyshawn Pierre. From what I understand, Bonnies were all over him for a long time. ( they can't judge talent?). Some may have a better understanding of exactly what went on during recruiting, but it seemed at the last minute Dayton swooped in.....showed him some of THEIR accomplishments (NCAA tourneys) and an arena (12,000), FULL of fans. I love the Bonnies.....but if I was Dyshawn.......I would have gone to Dayton too! Tastylcks said it best in a recent post......."there's just nothing to do". That's taken a bit out of context, but that's from a Bonnie fan. How you going to keep them down on the farm.........after they've seen........something bigger and better. Also.."a lack of someone on the staff that has any knowledge of teaching solid defensive fundamentals".... Jerome Robinson ... Our Canadian Recruiter" was Missouri Valley Defensve Player of the Year in his senior season. We get beat, yet I am defending the Bonnies.....I'm surprised .... you generally seem to know what's going on...

Complete Disappointment and another awful loss. This team confuses me beyond belief and I want to see passion and a fight from this team. Honestly, I want to see someone from our bench kicked out of a game for going absolutely crazy on our team when we don't get our heads out of our rear ends. We gotta find a way to bring life the the RC when the students are not there...its not like you are going to the movies. Make some noise already. It's 10 degrees......yet my wife...my son with his family ( yeah a cheerleader too) my grandsons.....were ALL there...and now it seems you are blaming US for this loss because we didn't make some noise? I guess you know what you can do.......

I wasn't really too surprised with what happened last night. I had a feeling Dayton was going to make a ton of three balls. Dayton looks really good right now. I have seen their last 3 games and they are legit. Our team is just really inconsistent. We can play one amazing game and then a terrible one the next. The 3 ball is the x-factor though. If we don't guard the 3 ball anybody can beat us, and I mean anybody.

A Stat from my notes that I thought was worth putting up here for those who didn't see the blog post... In the second half Dayton attempted 11 three pointers, two of which, TWO, were contested. Dayton made seven of those eleven. A colossal failure for the Bonnies. For the game the Bonnies contested a total of five Dayton three pointers, the rest were open looks…Impossible to win playing that way. Dayton did exactly what they wanted and Archie Miller’s team put on a freaking clinic in the RC tonight. Ndoye did not have a single post entry pass to him the entire game. www.thebonablog.com

Agree with everything you said except for the last part. Nothing is going to wake up the townies. Not that they had a lot to cheer about last night but they are pretty unexcited sports fans (in general). I am sure they may have their version of a "fireman ed" but not nearly enough of them. They never made noise when I was there 14 yrs ago and they don't make noise now. It will never change and there is no excuse for it.

However, I think the second half contested three point stat is slightly misleading. It seemed to me that around midway through second half, the Bonnies were trying to force steals or rush Dayton into long-range shots earlier in the shot clock. That's the right approach to try and desperately dig your way out of a hole. Unfortunately, Dayton responded and shot the lights out when they got the open looks. Tough loss with the score differential, but I'm glad the Bonnies got to see Dayton early in the A-10 season. The Flyers are the best opponent the Bonnies have faced to date, and their unorthodox lineup presents unique matchup problems for any team.

Here is the link for last nights “Lowlights” of our 17 pt loss. Vegas underestimated the Flyers or grossly overestimated us with the 1 point line. daytonflyers.com/ It appeared to me that Youssou appeared gimpy after his hard fall where he laid face down for some period of time. Did not see the trainer come out to check him out. At the end of the game Youssou looked more dejected than I have ever seen him. He just sat on the bench after the final buzzer for a long time with head down. Someone mentioned Pierre owning Dion in the paint. Not really, these highlights show he also made Youssou & Chris look bad posting them up as well. Youssou leads the conference, by a wide margin, in shot blocking but rarely blocks the shot of the man he’s guarding. Almost all his blocks come off leaving his man to fly across the paint & block a slasher who beat his defender. He defends the air better than anyone in the conference. To the surprise of many, its evident that Dayton is a better team after dumping their two bigs. Chemistry is far improved & they move the ball to perfection opening up good shooters. They beat Duquesne 81-55 as a tune up for us & should be a force down the stretch IF they can maintain their stamina. That is doubtful when they head to Bklyn. Playing 7 will catch up to them. They had 3 bench points in their 26 point dismantling of the Dukes. At some point the legs will get heavy & the trey ball they depend upon will falter. As we all know, the glaring deficiency in our Bonnies is defending the trey. This is not a new problem. Presently we are dead last in the A10 allowing teams to hit an incredible .386 of their TREYS. Richmond coming up is an average TREY shooting team. Lets hope we don’t make them look like superstars from deep. We have made many teams look like they shoot in arenas with good shooting backgrounds (Awaiting Chucks stats). Lets get a hand in the face to just let them see the background & not the rim. I dread the thought of playing Davidson who relies heavily on the 3 ball & nails them at an incredible conference best .404. Unless we can address our #1 deficiency before then, they will be licking their chops on their home court.

Exactly...one of the only reasons we beat UMass was their dismal 4/22 from three-land.

Ndoye was really not an offensive factor last night, 0 for 4 from the field with 9 rebounds. Rebounding effort still strong, but he needs to be far stronger in the paint. Three blocks on defensive end were also a good indication, but he needs more complete games.

Ndoye is a solid player for us and hustles as much as anyone but his offensive game although improved has limits. Two or three times last night he had a 10-15 foot jumper and proceeded to either do a back in or pass it away. I think he needs to start taking the jumper instead of handing off to someone else to restart the offense with 15 seconds left on the shot clock. With Jay and Posely decent from three point range I am a little confused why we can't work some high screens for both of these guys. All of our guys down low are slashers or good at making something happen off the offensive boards. So let them fire away and see what happens. Really couldn't have been any worst than what I saw. Defensively I just don't get it. Beginning of the year we were being praised for the defensive effort. Only thing I can figure is the defense that worked so well on Niagara isn't going to cut it in the A10. I am still not sure that we would not be better served running two separate squads out there, particularly in games like this. Smith has become the forgotten man but in my opinion he has been a contributor whenever he gets extended minutes. Jalen Adams gets mop up duty with Xavier with less than two minutes left. This is the guy Schmidt supposedly was claiming was his best recruit ever. Too many disconnects with the preseason hype and what we are seeing on the court. Dayton was unbeatable last night but unless we bounce back against Richmond it could be a real roller coaster season. Not the 20 plus wins a few of us were thinking about. I look at this team and really don't know where we will be in a months time.

I would say that Youssou not only hustles as much as anyone but that he may be the greatest hustle player on the team & shows no regard for his body in the process. He should play wearing head gear.
Offensively he is limited, only showing a baby J hook and flushes next to the rim off passes or put backs. He does have a 15’ J but has been hesitant to take it all season. He should be encouraged to take that shot which they often give. His .442 from the field is below par for a 7’ playing against smaller defenders. If he receives the ball facing the basket he has no offensive game unless there is a clear path to the hole unless he takes the short J. He has dramatically reduced his walking turn overs upon receiving the ball deep. But handling the pass and hesitancy on what to do with it often ends badly.
Coach Schmidt never referred to Jalen Adams as his “best recruit ever.” That would be ludicrous. He did refer to Jalen as his most athletic recruit.
Even if we win on the road in Richmond I expect a “roller coaster” season.

OK.."most athletic recruit ever". Schmidt was very excited when he was signed but the kid never sees the court. I stand by what I said. It doesn't seem possible that the best athletic recruit you ever signed can't find any playing time. Last season I heard repeatedly that the best player on the team was the red shirt freshman. That was out there and I heard it from quite a few different people. So either Jalen is not as good as his preseason hype or he is in the Schmidt doghouse. It was encouraging to see him on the court last night, even in a very limited role. I also thing Xavier needs more playing time. He seems to do enough good things with the limited playing time to earn more.
