...no more student housing in francis hall for at least the next 2 years...why?...declining enrollment...30+ jcc students will be living on 2nd doyle...why?...once again, declining enrollment has a part to play in this...available beds + jcc's desire to accomodate some of its students who need housing = win/win...bonas makes some money charging the jcc kids the same room and board our kids have to pay and jcc knows that their kids have a good place to live when not in class at jcc...p.s...and bonas is hoping they will like living on the bona campus enough that when they're done getting their associate's degree at jcc, they'll enroll at bonas...
and how about an astronony club at bonas?...first meeting drew 30+ students...we've got an observatory and apparently some unused telescopes that will now be used...and the first meeting of a new club for those interested in pursuing a health-related career drew 86 students...
all of this info came from this week's bv...hopefully, all these changes will help bonas "bottom line" and/or spark an uptick in student enrollment...

Canisius has already been housing either UB or Buff State (I don't remember exactly which) students all year! Like we always said where I grew up: "Ya gotta do what ya gotta do"!

Roughly 400 bona students are living in Allegany in substandard housing. Why can't bona convince them that bona is a good place to spend their college years?

1.) The freshman class needs to be 500 students....at a minimum and consistently each year.
2.) SBU has too many old residential buildings. Rob/Fal and Dev need to be replaced by a state-of-the-art dorm. Some of the on-campus living facilities are as substandard as those in Allegany.
3.) Sister Margaret should retire. SBU will not get much beyond where it is right now with her onboard.

And, Dev? Replace Dev? Should we tear it down?

With all respect, it's time for a substantial, new residential facility. Rob/Fal has had Band-Aid after Band-Aid applied to it over the years as has Dev. Bluntly, both of these dorms are a turn-off to prospective students. Tear down Dev? IMHO...yes...and Rob/Fal too. By the way....recalling the slick SBU Strategic Plan (which included facilities) that popped up right around the scandal......where is the Administration/Board with that Strategic Plan today? Is there, in fact, a current Strategic Plan or an update of the original? If so, I'd like to see the document.
P.S. While replacing Dev and Rob/Fal take a real leap and replace Plassman too.

I lived on campas all four 4 years at Bonas and never had a problem getting alcohol. My senior year we lived over at the townhouses and had a party every weekend. Senior year we went down to the Skeller a few nights a week for .50 beers. Alcohol is a stupid reason for living off campus. You get caught with alcohol on campus and you are under age you get written up. You get caught off campus you get a ticket. Unless things have dramatically changed since 2000.

I lived on campus first two years, off campus in Allegany second two ('05-'07). You'd have to be nuts to spend your upperclass years on campus. Completely different experience.

I lived in Dev my freshman yr, with 2 roommates, and moved into the UN (rugby house) my Sophomore year.. That was in '01-'02, and i only did it because i was never comfortable living in a "dorm". I liked the freedom of living in a house, and everything. But i had friends who stayed on campus up till their Senior yr, and they liked it.. The only draw back was i really never got to know my fellow class mates from '00..

It is an interesting concept having JCC students live on the Bona campus. One problem with this I could see: If you were a kid and wanted the experience of attending a four year private school would you rather spend $4400 for tuition or $29,510? Live on the SBU campus as a JCC student and have all the on campus experiences except attending classes (for that you drive to the JCC campus 3 miles away?) and save $50,000 in the first two years? Transfer to SBU for the last two years and you graduate with the same degree $50,000 cheaper. IF you are in the top 20% of your high school class you could go to JCC tuition free so subtract another $8800 from your degree. I hope this helps Bonaventure and it is a good to try something different, but if I am a parent looking at SBU I might look at that JCC option.

These JCC students will not have library, commissary or RC privleges as those services will be provided either on their own campus or through the commissary/kitchen facilities at Francis Hall. So the degree of interaction should be limited. I agree thought that this issue has to be handled carefully. JUCO's will not be allowed the free range of campus, just like the Canisius/BuffState situation, they are merely dorming on campus.
