You don't know about a player until you start playing some regular season games. Jalen is a perfect example. That goes both ways, good or bad. I agree above is usually true, but I can think of exceptions. -- Kevin Houston only Mid-Night Madness with the Bonnies was all you needed to see to realize he was going to be the star of the team. -- Remember first time seeing Barry Atkinson and wondering why Satalin would give Barry a scholarship. -- First time I saw Barry Mungar, I thought what a waste of a scholarship. Never would have dreamed at the time he would become a 4th round NBA pick. Kevin Houston I agree with, but he came for a year from a higher program. Can't comment on Atkinson, but Barry Mungar was a talent that developed over his years, which is what they are supposed to do. Very little time to develop Jucos. Mungar was a beanpole who could jump through the roof, but as he grew into his body and developed his skills, he became a really good player, especially his senior year.

as the mungar story goes, bona had signed rob samuels who played in an all star game in canada with mungar. samules recommended mungar to satalin who took a look and liked what he saw. mungar really grew as a player, is one of my favorite bonnies over the years. loved it when he scored 30 on walter berry in MSG in the holiday festival.

Thought the same thing right away Chuck - can't remember Schmidt ever being so effusive in his praise of an incoming kid. Didn't he have great praise for Jalen Adams? Reading Schmidt's high praise of Courtney Stockard has me wondering how accurate was his comments for the 2014 recruiting class? Reading the following you can see Schmidt is right on with his description of the players. We should be very excited about Courtney or should should we? How accurate were we with our expectations for the 2014 class? -- Marcus Posley had following comments from Schmidt "He's a guard who can really stretch the floor with his shooting ability. He was one of the best shooters in junior college this season, and he also has a season of Division I experience at Ball State. We are excited about Marcus' potential to help us immediately." Marcus is the A-10's 4th leading scorer for returning players. Marcus was the team's star. I think Marcus far exceeded our expectations. -- "Jaylen is a scoring point guard who really understands how to play the game," said Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt. "He can distribute when he needs to distribute, he scores when he needs to score, and he shoots it well from beyond the arc. I am a firm believer that you learn how to win from winning and Mount St. Joseph is one of the best. He's played against high-level competition and knows how to win. We're really excited to have him come to Bona's." Jaylen was the starter from day 1. Jaylen is the A-10's leader in assists per game for returning players. Jaylen far exceeded our expectations. -- "Idris is a 'glue guy' – he is an unselfish player who will do whatever it takes to help his team win," said Schmidt. "He may not do any one thing great, but he does everything well. He's a tough kid who, when he concentrates solely on basketball, is going to make a big jump forward in his development. Defensively, he's long and can cover all of the perimeter positions. He will add a lot to the class we are bringing in and will fit in really well with the way we play." Idris' 225 minutes played was just 4 less than Chris Dees. As the season proceeded Idris minutes increased. I think Idris did slightly better than we thought. -- "Iakeem is a hard-nosed, aggressive guard who loves to play and will bring great energy to the court," said Schmidt. "He'll be the quarterback who will make everyone around him better. He will put tremendous pressure on the ball defensively and he'll push the ball on offense." For me Iakeem was everything I expected, except maybe his reported bad shot was even worse than I could imagine. Iakeem had a couple solid games. He was the star of the UMass game. I thought Iakeem was going to be the starter last year, but jaylen was just too good. -- "We are thrilled that Jordan has decided to come to St. Bonaventure," said Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt. "He's 6-10 and can run and jump with the best of them … you can't teach athleticism and he has it. He's a long, athletic 4 or 5 man who runs well, blocks shots and has a soft touch. His offense is much improved this year and we're looking forward to seeing him continue to develop." Jordan played in just 1 minute and looked extremely raw in the exhibition against Mansfield. Jordan was significantly below our expectations. FJS brought up Jalen Adams comments. Jalen was everything that Schmidt described, but he could not learn the offense. This led to a disappointing year. gobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2013-14/releases/20140422dqp4qlgobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2013-14/releases/20140428nxmf5rgobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2013-14/releases/20131120sfacvjgobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2013-14/releases/20131114pv9fbx

Schmidt also said "Jalen needs to develop his jumpshot ". After watching Jalen over the last two years mostly in shootaround's and scrimmages, I would say he never developed a consistent outside shot or other elements in the skill set necessary to be productive in the A-10. In The few games he had success in early in the year, he got away with pure athleticism against lower quality opponent such as Dartmouth. Unfortunately, Schmidt's assessment was pretty much spot on.
