Taped the game just watched first half.....same old story in a A10 play, foe shoots lights out from 3. On defense not enough pressure on the ball. RI guards able to pass easily. Meanwhile Bona guards tightly guarded.

We lost because we missed too many easy shots around the bucket, and too many free throws too. Mark can't play the post and four too. Seven assists for the game is really painful. Adams and Mobley still had 38 points combined - Ayeni had zero and Ikepeze had two...our post problems continue. By the way for all the down dogs....we are still in this thing and there is a long way to go. Better games are ahead, sit back enjoy and have a Schaefer lager.

Bonnies will be 10-3 next time they face Rhode Island.
Win @ Davidson and then we’re going streaking! Who’s with me?

Bonnies will be 10-3 next time they face Rhode Island. Win @ Davidson and then we’re going streaking! Who’s with me? I had 3 games circled as losses and 2 as toss-ups at the start of conference play. These are the games the Bonnies can lose and still have a chance at the NCAA (excluding the obvious: what might happen in the A10 tourney, how the P6 teams we played perform in conference, etc.). Losses: @dayton @rhode Island @vcu Toss-ups: Rhode Island @st. Joseph's 3 of the 4 tough road games are behind us. I'm not surprised by any of those losses.

I think we again lack enough from the bench to win in this league. To play uptempo and relentless defense you have to sub. Give some time to Chef what is there to lose at this point. Any freshman that is good gets in some. it may be too late now, but i think we would have had a deeper bench if chef, brock and nelson got more minutes of playing time earlier in the year...we certainly could've used a productive chef when our bigs faltered (which happens too often), brock would be closer to playing like a soph (frosh will play like frosh, but the ones that play quality minutes consistently look less and less like frosh as the season goes on) and nelson is playing his 3rd season (actually his 2nd and a half season) and should've been a trusted 3rd guard off the bench by now...

Nelson had hundreds of minutes, the other two are freshman, one of which has played more than most players during Schmidt’s tenure. We just can’t play quality ball for 40.
Mark’s teams have historically gotten better and better as the season wears on, I hate that this year is the anamoly.

We've been schooled and I think we probably have learned a few things in the last few games. Could you believe an A10 team once went 1-5 to start the conference schedule and ended up in the Elite 8? Dayton did it in 2014. I'm not saying that's our future too, just saying there is a lot of basketball to enjoy and some really good possibilities if we have our act together like we did in the first and fourth quarters of the URI game. I'm looking forward to my trip to Davidson this week and hope to see a lot of my fellow manic Bona brethren carrying the torch for our team.

Here are some +/- data to chew over. Our two bigs each played 11 minutes. We were -2 with Amadi on the floor and -11 with Josh. If anyone has the time to dig into the play-by-play and calculate some of the others, I'd be interested to see the data.

It’s a shame for the Bonnies the league isn’t as deep as it was then. 2 teams at 10-6 dancing. 6 teams overall dancing . Schedule allowing each team for 8 chances at top 60 wins, 10-11 chances at top 100 wings. I don’t know who Dayton played to start at 1-5- it was probably more challenging that our current slate- but either way there has always a chance at resiliencyx For me, I’m starting to fear our non conference run was not as impressive as it looked at the time. But I’ll hold out hope we’re just in a rut, and can get it together and find a 3rd option and make a run.

Keep in mind Schmidt teams typically finish well down the stretch before A10 play. The last three years SBU is a combined 13-2 in the last five games leading up to the A10 tournament.
I agree the game Friday is very important, but even a 2-4 doesn’t put a top 4 finish out of reach. This year 11 wins or maybe even 10 should get you the 4 seed.

The thing is though I really think top 3 finish, not too 4, should be the goal. Being at #4 would mean a semi-final date with rhody. I’d much rather not get them until the final- if we made it there we’d be riding adrenaline, and they will probably be playing for a 6 vs 8 seed or something of the like.

Yes, bonahoops11, the A10 was a stronger conference in 2014. Dayton opened with a loss to kenpom #35 SLU, then beat #201 Fordham. They then lost four straight: #91 Richmond, #25 VCU, #115 Rhody, and #55 SJU. They played SLU, VCU, and Joe's at home, the others away and the only loss less than a nine point margin was a three point loss to SJU.

Thanks Class70. I actually was half expecting that their 5 losses all came against would-be tourney teams. Instead it was 3 tourney teams, 1 NIT Team (could 2018 Dayton be our NIT team in the cross comparison? Not impossible), And a Rhody Team who went nowhere (ala Joes this year).
Obviously every year is different but that slow start compared to the way they finished- certainly enough to give hope for us right now in a time where hope is needed!
And by the way- Bonnies Home vs Dayton that year, I remember quite well. Homecoming weekend I watched from behind the glass as we led alll day, and let it slip on the last 2 mins. A vintage so close but yet so far game form the “post Nicholson” era (ie many of the same guys from 2012 but missing that one X factor).
Go, Bona’s.
