I agree with the F bombs should not be used - distasteful, coming from a Catholic institution, etc. (in defense of the Students, it is not totally their fault because Buffalo's initials are U B. So it is so easy to put another letter in front of the U) (I jest). Can we still say SU(cks)? - cause they do.

On Saturday afternoon, Fr. Gerald was in heaven shaking his head in disgust at our students' behavior.
I too would like to think the students can be more creative in showing their support of the Bonnies, and thanks to Dr. DePerro for addressing the issue.

Im not really defending the students here but it is a culture thing. Go to a Bills game and the fan behavior is awful. Western NY is not a hospitable place for sports. There is probably a large subset of Bona students who are Bills fans or have been around that culture. I am not saying I support it, but it is a thing.

Fr. Gerald, St. Francis and St. Bonaventure. Students need to learn that either you are classy or you are not. No one will ever refer to you as "sort of classy" in life. Same thing goes for "honesty".
Bonaventure's mission should be to create extraordinarily good people to send out into the world. The world needs good people with Franciscan values...and also a little class.

I’m not going to act like I was perfect when I attended games in the student section. Yell profanity at the refs or the other players. Get in their heads if it’s one a few individuals but we can’t have the entire student section chanting the F bomb. Just not a good look. Also try to do away with the middle fingers in the student section. I see it a lot when games are on tv and if it keeps happening the networks will stop showing our students on camera. Be loud, be mean, be rowdy, be down right nasty but just do it with a little bit of class.

Regarding the F Bombs, yeah it's wrong and should be addressed, as it was. End of the day though grain of salt, they are college kids and it's far from the first or last time at this or any other school. Does anyone remember the Maryland student section chanting "F You Reddick" so loudly and often that ESPN bleeped over it while JJ Reddick was on the free throw line?
As far as sexual assault, I agree that if this email and/or allegation is correct, a proper investigation be opened. Any truth to it is obviously unacceptable.

Yeah they are college students....So what, No excuse! Yes, maybe other schools may do it. Doesn't mean we have to do it and doesn't justify it! It's classless, it is unimaginative and portrays us as rubes. The president was right to address this, he had too! What do we want to be known for? The "you are ugly" chant - "UB (fill in any other team) Sucks" also becoming very hackneyed. Love the student body, love the energy they bring, and yes, they are at their best, when they are loud and belligerent, especially heckling the refs when they deserve it. Just wish they could be a bit more imaginative.

I agree with the President that the students sometimes go overboard with their chants......but this is not unusual.....fifty years ago we chanted the same thing about the Golden Griffs, or the Purple Eagles or the Wildcats. My point is that these kids are merely blowing off some steam, as students have done for time immemorial. That being said administrators will of course react to such conduct as somehow reflective of a need to crack down on the students. Its not going to change. Time to move on from this issue....censorship is not an option in our society. Free speech may be messy, but the alternative is much worse......

I don't remember chanting the F-word 50 years ago (my years were 1969-1973). About the worst we got as a group in unison was a little song that went "Calvin Murphy, he's an ---hole, he's an ---hole". I agree with what the President has written and with what he has asked of the student body.

Free speech...will have to remember that next time I have to address students at school for "f-ing" off teachers and trying to encourage decency and civility.

Well, at least there is a month-long hiatus until the next RC game (St. Joe's). Hopefully the Bona prexy's message will be beneficial going forward (though students will not be back til a few weeks later from semester break).
The onus is on a handful of instigators to clean up their act. If they cannot or will not behave in a respectful, sportsmanlike manner, have event staff kick violators out and revoke their ticket privileges.

I am not in favor of suppressing free speech. I am in favor of SBU students and fans conducting themselves in a manner reflecting my Alma Mater. So, I would suggest this: be loud, be boisterous, be creative....and do all this as if your parents, and maybe your younger siblings were sitting next to you in the crowd.
Several years ago at an SBU away game at Siena, a Saints fan seated several rows behind us (we were courtside) pleaded with Fran McCaffery to change defenses coming out of time out. Fran wheeled around and shouted “STFU!” at the fan. The arena was fairly quiet at the moment. I had my gradeschool-aged daughter with me. It was awkward, embarrassing and inappropriate.
Wrong for a coach and wrong for students and fans. Not reflective of these two schools values, culture and history. But, of course, they are free to say it.
And anyone is free to criticize it.
