Got this email this afternoon. A good idea, I thought.
To Our Valued Season Ticket Holders,
As you know, this Saturday's Bonnies-Charlotte men’s basketball game at 4 PM is not only the final home game of the season, but it is critical to St. Bonaventure's chances of making the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Our players, coaches and staff would love to see the Reilly Center full.
We are aware there are numerous conflicts for local fans, in particular the Olean and Allegany-Limestone High School boys and girls playoff basketball games. If you are unable to make the Bonnies game, we ask that you try to give your tickets away to someone who can make it. If you cannot find someone to take your tickets, please let us know and we will reprint your tickets here and give them away to deserving local charities and groups. The best way to reach me is to reply to this email or call 716-375-2500. We ask you to please reply by 3 p.m. tomorrow (Friday).
The fans are a big part of the team’s success and we appreciate your support of St. Bonaventure basketball this season!

While I agree that it is a great appeal to boost attendance, as far as I have heard there has been no appeal to the students and no offer to open the doors. The fact remains that the typical student makes much more noise than the rest of those at the games. Given the importance of the game, and just as importantly it is senior night, it makes no sense not to at least make this offer. Just open the dorms without meals if that was the case.

I've heard that Bona is asking the A-10 for permission to push the game back to a 7 o'clock start. Has anyone else heard this?

I have not heard about this it seems like a good idea to me, I would imagine Charlotte petitioning it though. If they were going to it would have to be announced within the next few hours to avoid really annoying some season ticket fans who don't check this board/gobonnies.com 20 times/day.

You're right '08. They were supposed to find out this morning. I guess the game was originally scheduled for 7:00. It does make sense.

I've heard that Bona is asking the A-10 for permission to push the game back to a 7 o'clock start. Has anyone else heard this? There is no way this could be done. Charlotte is probably already on a plane, or will be very shortly, with a strict itinerary already in place. As I'm sure njbonnie08 can inform us better, teams have a very strict hour-by-hour schedule on the road. They already have the hotel booked for X time and leaving at X time. They already have their shootarounds and walk-throughs scheduled in the RC. Their transportation to and from the airport, etc, etc. It would be asinine of the A-10 to change the time of the game now. Too much of a logistical nightmare, and not to mention the hundreds, if not thousands, of people who will show up at 4 tomorrow expecting a game because they didn't find out soon enough. We're playing at 4 tomorrow, so enjoy your kegs and eggs.

I like the 4:00 start. I'm attending a memorial service tomorrow, so I can't drive up for the game. I fervently hope it doesn't come to this, but if necessary, I was planning on crossing the river and rooting on Temple in the nightcap.

Let's wait and see. We're talking same day, three hours difference. I doubt that this would make that much of an impact on Charlotte's schedule. Most everyone could be notified throught the media, word of mouth, etc. I hope they can make the change!

Petro - I wish it was a 7 start as well, and would thoroughly enjoy it if they switched the time, but it can't happen this late in the game. On top of Charlotte's sked, you have to take into consideration the media - the radio broadcasts being adjusted 3 hours, the newspaper deadlines for a Sunday publication, etc. It's all been in place for weeks, if not months already. And what about the people working the game? The ushers and personnel that already have plans after the game, or what if they have to get to another job later in the night? The list just goes on and on.
An example of how much time is needed ahead of time to change the time of D-1 basketball game ... when they moved our game against GW to 9 in order to put it on TV. Granted, it was moved 2 hours to fit a TV schedule, and this much time wouldn't be as needed for a non-TV contest, but they switched the time of the February game from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock back in November. That's 4 months ahead of time for 2 hours difference. There's no way it can be done in one day for a 3-hour difference.

lazer, while I agree it's too late to change the start time, do you really think newspaper deadlines are an issue? Is the OTH sports department going to call a special meeting of Angee's Secret Society to ensure they have ample time to write a column? It's reporting on a game, it's not like they have to do research paper.
It's not all games are played on Saturday afternoon. Do you think JP Butler or Chick Melaro were told months ago that they needed to have their recap of March 7th game in by 8 PM or else?

The next time any team worries about print deadlines will be the FIRST time it happens. Not sure why you mention Melaro, though, clubber. He doesn't cover SBU, and I assume he'll be spending all day in Buffalo tomorrow for three prep playoff games.

I never once said anything about the teams worrying about a newspaper deadline, I simply included it in a litany of things that need to be factored into changing the time of a game this late. It's simply one other factor that goes into changing a gametime this late.
What about the Buffalo News coming down? Think a 3-hour change to a game the day before won't affect them at all in terms of who's covering it or whether they can cover a sectional game first then come after, etc.? What about the PIG moving its schedule around ... there's probably some Nascar qualifying or truck race it needs to broadcast tomorrow at 7 - when they were planning on not having a Bonnies game to cover.
They're just a few of a number of issues that have to be taken into consideration. I never once said OTH, either, and while I mentioned newspaper deadlines, it's a minute detail I probably should have just left out when I said it affects the media - and consequently how much coverage this "playoff" game gets in comparison to the high school "playoff" games. And considering there's constant bickering on this board all the time about how often the Buff News comes down, how we don't get on TV often enough, etc, it's something to seriously consider when you're thinking about changing the time of the game. I'd say after how it affects both team's schedules and how it impacts the attendance, it's the next most important issue to take on.
