Yeah, I read that interest and enrollment had been down at ND until they built new practice facilities.

Yeah, I read that interest and enrollment had been down at ND until they built new practice facilities. Obviously facilities at ND do nothing for enrollment but when you look at a school like Bonaventure of 2000 students a school that dose not even have indoor facilities dose not even have a commercial place for students to hang out...... it will effect interest and enrollment.

I enjoyed the fun and spirited debate we had about football a couple years back. We also discussed how the admin dropped the ball a number of times when they had a chance to upgrade athletic facilities. As long as B Snow is around I will remain skeptical about any plans to help athletics. There is close to 200,000 H.S student athletes playing football within a 6 hr drive of SBU that 99.9% will never show an interest in coming to SBU without football. Almost every school that has started a football program over the last 10 years had student recruitment as a top reason to start it. For all you who make your uneducated statements, pick up the phone and talk to SBU's own J DiRizio and let him tell you how vital football impacted student recruiting when he worked at F&M.

Oh because what works at F&M will obviously work at Bonaventure.... F&M has a slight advantage to Bonaventure; "The first non-Division I school to play 1,000 games when the Diplomats faced Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania on September 28, 2002, Franklin & Marshall has begun every season since 1889 with the green grass of the gridiron alive with the excitement of football. The birth process of the sport at the College began in 1886 when Franklin & Marshall...." Aside from that F&M is D3. According to NCAA rules If we want to remain D1 in Basketball, any football program would have to be D1AA which would require more money than anyone would want to think about spending as long as buildings like Plassman still exist.

Instead of going back and forth with those of you who have come late to the party go back and look up this topic in the archives.

According to the NFHS 2008-2009 #'s there was a total of 1,113,062 males playing HS football. It is the # 1 participation sport for males in the U.S.
Conn-10,629 Mass-20,789 Penn-26,910 Ohio 55,392 NJ-27,623 NY-38,354 WV-6,534 total=186,231 There are also HS leagues like the NYC psal that does not belong to the NFHS. The # also does not include prep schools and JC's.
Stover could you please file this in your " I don't know what I am talking about" cabinet.

clubber,
Not sure where you found your numbers, nor do I care. How-eva, less than 99.9% of those players that you cite are D-1 level players. So I'm not sure of the relevance of your statement but I'm all for a football team if it means we don't have to put up with people trying to legitimize the existence of club teams.

I NEVER KNEW! Alright so lets find the 30 million out of thin air it would cost to build stadium, coaches salaries, insurance, practice facilities, expansion of athletic department overhead, uniforms, league fees, travel costs etc......create a D1AA team in NY which is overflowing with football talent....not. Then after 5 years of miserable football, millions down the drain, maybe ten thousand dollars of revenue if lucky....we will have a 10% increase in enrollment because people play football. Bona is a school of 2000 in bumbleville, ny.....we simply do not have the resources to create a football team. Maybe when Plassman is replaced we have a new basketball arena, the school has 4000 people and the budget is brimming with cash than yes...until then stop, really it makes no sense.

Just for arguments sake...and accepting your 30 million cost and 10% increase in students. Assume 10% increase = 200 students at 20,000 tuition/year = 4 million dollars in new revenue each year forever That would mean in the program could very well be cost justified We'd also have 200 more students and increased applications resulting in a higher avg SAT score of incoming frosh....works pretty well... My main point is...dont be so flippant about ANY idea/program that might boost pating students by 10%.....its a very significant improvement...especially when you consider current facilities could accomodate such an increase You did a fine job in backing up Clubbers point....

NYC PSAL abides by the National Federation. States belong to the National Federation, not individual school districts.
