Athletic programs will also benefit as there are plans for a sporting/multi-purpose complex that will provide indoor and outdoor facilities for a variety of sporting events and tournaments, according to the press release.
I've heard this will include a hockey rink, and lighted, turf fields for use not only by SBU, but the surrounding community as well (for a fee).
This is good news, and a long time coming. Glad to see it finally come to fruition (pending all the red tape to get through first.

Not to criticize the T-H ,but I don't think they've covered this at all.

Is the Castle Property completely inside the Town of Allegany, or does some of it go into Olean Town?

Is the Castle Property completely inside the Town of Allegany, or does some of it go into Olean Town? I believe it's completely in the Town of Allegany. I don't think the Town of Olean extends beyond the west border of the City of Olean. I'm pretty sure you go from the Town of Allegany directly into the City of Olean, and that doesn't occur until you pass Applebees (going east).

Thanks OleanSBU. Sounds like the property is all in Allegany Town. I know that there are no dog legs in the Town line. The Allegany Town line begins at the Pennsylvania line and goes straight north until it reaches Humphery Town. Olean and Hinsdale Towns border to the east. Do you know if SBU still owns that tennis center in Olean?

It's interestiing that a question comes up on the tennis center. As far as I know the school still owns it,and if so it is one of its most underutilized assets.

Is there any possibility of the plan calling for the preservation of that sweet little Par 3 Nine holer behind the Castle?

Is there any possibility of the plan calling for the preservation of that sweet little Par 3 Nine holer behind the Castle? Wasn't that already reverting back to new-growth forest even before the Castle closed?

Getting firm financial commitments from investors to establish a hotel, restaurant/s, housing, retailers, & recreation options will be the key to its success. That will be a challenge in today’s economy. The development of these businesses and housing would greatly add to the curb appeal of Bona. SBU’s largest front lawn, beautiful buildings & mountain backdrop are tainted when you look to the North & see a rubble lot with chain link fence.

There hasn't been anything going on within the facility though ... although I think the tennis team might use it as an indoor practice center. From time to time I still see security guards driving out from the parking lot there ... unless they're just parking while getting a McDonald's fix.

The tennis team does practice there when there's bad weather. The place is a dump though.

No way does project have any legs. Who do they expect to fill the restaurants or spend money shopping? The Olean mall is a joke and it's not like people are going to drive to SBU to shop at the retail center.
The university has ties to unsuitable properties that continue to be a money drain and this proposed plan makes absolutely no economic sense, especially given the current state of the economy but even more so the state of the local economy. This area does not need more restaurants or service jobs. I'm amazed that people who run an institution of education consistently miss this fundamental point. I'd feel even worse if SBU actually had an econ program instead of a makeshift program tied into the business school.

The retail/restaurant space looks to be a throw in that would feed off the traffic of the rest of the project not the focus.
If you have the funds it is a good time to build (low labor and borrowing cost) and much of the development would feed off the university (athletic facilities, student apartments, gaming center, hotel).
BTW I know it is a chicken/egg argument, but there is no reason to go into that mall. Is there a more dead anchor store then JC Penny?
