If you thought Villanova's NCAA win was a win for the little guys, now another one. Little North Dakota just won the NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey Championship.

not to burst your bubble maple but in hockey they arent so much "the little guys." Hockey is a little different. They play in the NCHC which is like Hockey's equivalent of the SEC in football. They are a national hockey power. This was their 8th Championship.

North Dakota is a hockey power, but Union College won the the NCAA hockey championship in 2014. Enrollment at Union is 2,242.
I would not be surprised to see Canisius in the frozen four sometime in the next decade. The Pegula's helped Canisius a lot with that new rink complex at Harbor Center. Buffalo hockey in general is on the rise.

If Canisius is successful, maybe some of it will wear off on Niagara. RIT also plays a good brand of hockey.

Maplehurst,
Yes, RIT was in the Frozen Four just last season.
Niagara, I think, also has access to Harbor Center, although they have their own rink on campus. Niagara has had good teams in the past. Mercyhurst, too, has had excellent teams.
Small schools definitely have a legitimate opportunity to win big in NCAA hockey. Money is less of an issue than in basketball and football. Also, college hockey freshman are often in their 20s, starting college only after they have finished playing junior league. I think having more mature players across the board leads to parity. Hockey is also a sport where a hot goalie and one lucky bounce can win a game against a superior opponent.

RIT also does not give scholarships. What a difference across NCAA sports when there isnt greed involved.

I am sure that as the suns rises in the east that Union makes generous accommodations for non athletic assistance to its hockey players.....no need to worry, just because it is not labeled as athletic scholarship funds.
Anyone who thinks that the frosh hockey player from Saskatoon is paying full fare at Union is deceiving themselves.

Absurd that Bonas does not have D-1 Hockey program.
(Cue the boo-birds)

Absurd that Bonas does not have D-1 Hockey program. (Cue the boo-birds) Some of the best times I had in college were at Bona's club hockey games. I can only imagine how fun it would be to have a sanctioned team. Too bad Olean doesn't have a fancy new ice arena like Jamestown does 30 miles up the road. It might be possible. I think if we add anything it should be lacrosse. Nice new playing surface, strong local tradition in the sport. seems plausible to me

Anyone who thinks that the frosh hockey player from Saskatoon is paying full fare at Union is deceiving themselves. True to some degree. I know the Union hockey coach personally. He says that due to the prohibition on athletic scholarships he is forced to recruit kids from either low income or high income families. Not much in the middle. The low income kids qualify for significant financial aid. The high income group don't need much help. This still puts Union at a significant disadvantage to schools like BC and Minnesota who give full rides to just about every player on the team regardless of family income. Thus, winning the national championship is impressive.

We have all the facilities needed to field a Lax team. It's a growing sport, especially in WNY. Could be a real draw for enrollment.

Why not. its not only possible but possible to succeed. Not to mention like you say WNY has a wealth of lacrosse. Denver U just won the national championship, best player is from Salamanca. Not saying we'd get him just saying there are players like that in our own backyard. people are obsessed with Rochester- lacrosse is a big deal in Rochester high schools right now. We got that beautiful new lacrosse field. lets do it

2 reasons: (and yes its officially the offseason with this conversation going on) 1) Money 2) Title IX
Both are related since if we had the money I bet we would add Mens Lax and another women's sport but until we have more money to play with, I dont think it will happen. I'd love to see a Lax program at Bonas, its a really popular sport in this region

Not to pick on any team and it might be a harsh opinion here, I am just a guy spitballing on a message board, but the tennis team has like 7 players. Lacrosse brings like 20. I am assuming both teams would have very few scholarships so you are adding at the very least 13 more paying students? If I am off base here you can scold me. Not to mention what a popular lacrosse team could do for the university.
