Observations from a guy who could not make his JV team. - Two well played games plus one OT session - point differential was 1! I would say were are pretty evenly matched. Lost my bet to a co worker from Duq - we bet who would win the total point spread for the two games. When we won down in Pitt, I thought it was money in the bank - I also thought it was money in the Bank when "0" went to the line to shoot foul shots at the end. I figured we were going to win by one. A number of posters have pointed out the free throw shooting. - in 50 plus years of watching BB, and even referring little kids BB, I do not ever remember anyone stepping out of bounds three times in one game - even if they were chasing a loose ball or rebound. May be a World Record - Steele's hairdo last nite has to the be the worst of all Mens College Basketball. Reallllly bad look - As a practicing Catholic, loved seeing Coach's ashes on TV last nite. - As many have pointed out, the Refs were allowing the big guys to be physical on the inside. To our detriment. But the put back dunks by both sides were phenomenal.

mcspin you point out the missed foul that I felt was the worst I have seen in a long time. Its affect on the outcome was tremendous which magnifies how bad it was.
That obvious foul was at 1:56 with us up 3. It allowed their offensive rebound which resulted in an OSUN foul on HUGHES who made his 2 FTs to put them down just 1 with 1:44.
Had the foul been called we had the opportunity to go up 5 or 6 with about 90 secs left.

I can see not calling the push off on Hughes, maybe you missed it or maybe you just want to let the guys play, ok fine. But to call the foul on Welch? What???

what about the alleged force out on the baseline against ENGLISH?

The call on JAREN's foul of HUGHES was not for a force out (he never went out of bounds)but for impeding his progress.
I felt it was not a bad call. HOWEVER they COULD have easily overlooked it to even out the terrible missed call on WELCH being pushed from the behind, allowing them an offensive rebound resulting in 2 points. DOM did speak to the ref for some time pleading his case so they were at least aware of a complaint. I can only assume non of the refs saw the push. Can't imagine them swallowing the whistle if they saw it. Bad break!

Conspiracy theory, I have heard rumors that a couple of Duquesne students broke into the RC and specifically the men's locker room yesterday afternon and took Bobby's footwear and replaced them with a larger size...

I listened to the game on the Radio while driving the other night. I did not hear them mention English even touching the ball on offense the last 2-3 possessions. That surprised me. Was he being over-played or something ? For my money - the kid should be our #1 or # 2 option (worst case) in those end of game situations. He has a great ability to get to the basket and is money from the line. Kudos to Duquense if they were able to take him away as an option - but it sounded like Kyle's mind was made up.
I could be all wet here - as I didn't watch it go down. Could someone break it down for me ?
THANKS

THANKS 82.5 I think coach wants the ball in Kyle's hands at the end of the game and I can't argue with that. He got off a decent shot that almost went down. We even had a couple tips after that shot that didn't fall either. It was agonizingly close to going our way.

Lofton has it at the top of the key, Osun sets a screen and then peels off. Lofton can either take it himself, dish to Osun or kick it out to the wing, which was Welch this time. Lofton chose to take it himself same play beat VCU, it beat UCLA, it beat Rhody over the years, but it is 0-2 this year against Fordham & Duquesne late. Maybe Schmidt should try a different play

Maybe Schmidt should try a different play I don't think there is anything wrong with the play call however I would be in favor of them flipping the play. The Schmidt play is almost always run with the PG on the right side of the floor and the pick being set to the middle of the floor giving the guard the chance to drive the left side of the lane and the big to roll to the right side. OO is more comfortable on the left side of the basket, and Lofton is perfectly capable to drive right, so I would run the same play but start it on the other side of the floor. Not saying you would get a different result but you would play to your strengths.

I'm no coach but I would run a play screening for Osun in that scenario instead of using him as the screener, especially since he was dominating offensively Wednesday night. Welch runs baseline coming off a screen from Winston to wing. Then Winston cuts across and screens for Osun coming across the lane in front of Welch who hits him for a game winning layup.

The last play in regulation worked well. KYLE created separation and went up with an uncontested soft one hander that rolled tantalizing around the rim nearly dropping in. Shot the ball a fraction under 5 secs allowing for us to put back a miss.
KYLE makes that shot a high % of the time.
His first missed FT also was an in and out ALMOST good. JAREN had a drive that also JUST rolled out at 2:19 which would have provided a 5 point lead. Just before that, on the other end STEELE had his off target shot take a very fortunate shooter's bounce for a score.
Add to that KYLE'S injury causing him to sit for 3 valuable mins returning at 1:46, the missed foul on DOM allowing their offensive rebound of CARRY's missed trey and you had key events go against us.
Our come back from 7 down at the half to go up 5 at 2:50 fell short due to several things that all went the DUKES way. We were so close to a win.

In watching the replay I fully appreciated the performance of JAREN at PG when KYLE left the game for 3 mins at a critical time with just 4:44 left. We were up 1 at the time.
Within 14 secs JAREN takes the ball end to end thru everyone for a score at the rim. Has done that a lot this year. Next possession he brings it up the court passes to BOBBY who passes it back to him at the top of the key where he attacks the rim again for another basket. 4 pts in 58 secs.
From that point there were fouls called on OSUN, DOM and JAREN. All 3 were very close calls at best. DOM's foul, after being pushed in the back by HUGHES allowing his offensive rebound, can't be detected as many times as I re-ran it with a closeup camera. Those things happen, but seconds after an ignored OBVIOUS foul permitting the HUGHES huge rebound (resulting in 2 pts) really hurts.
Noticed that WEATHERS (who was riding the bike at the end of their bench) was getting into it with the baseline student body. Very animated but appeared good natured razzing.
Liked the concern showed by CARRY when KYLE turned his ankle. I felt it took forever to get our trainer out to the injured KYLE laying on the floor.
As we come to our final 3 regular season games it's nice to see balanced scoring and a tick up in scoring 74 ppg (last 7 games) compared to 69.9 all season.
KYLE 14.1 PPG
JAREN 13.2 ppg
OSUN 12.2 ppg
DOM 10.8 ppg
JUSTIN 8.8 ppg

After the final horn, Dunn-Martin also had some animated interaction with the Bona student section. It resulted with the students chanting "angry elf" at him [finally something clever from our students]. He did not seem so "good natured" and kept getting back into it despite several teammates and staff members trying to have him walk away before he finally joined the handshake line.

Well maybe someone will speak up about our student section chanting “You are ugly” to opposing players... it’s unoriginal, it’s juvenile, and most of all, it’s flat out pathetic... I’m embarrassed every time they do this, and I hope they avoid it at A-10s.
