I came across this on Twitter, which, roll your eyes now, is usually a cause for concern in and of it self. Anyway, the tweet was associated with Andy Slavit, who I've heard speak a number of times, Andy is the former head of the health care/medicaid program under President Obama. What was being touted was a testing procedure that was recently approved by the FDA. The test is called SalviaDirect, it was developed by the epidemiology and public health people at Yale and their medical school. The value to colleges and universities, in our case Bonas, is the ability to offer a test that is pretty accurate, but also very cheap. The belief is that the test could be offered at $4 a pop. Colleges and universities, particularly place like Bonas that are looking to open up, in terms of in person classes, will need to do a lot of testing if they hope to short circuit any outbreaks of the virus. This test seems like something that could make testing timely and affordable, something that has worried college administrators. This is also the test that has recently been used by the NBA, with pretty good results so far. Here's an article about the test. www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29667299/fda-allowing-saliva-based-test-funded-nbaI sent the information to President DePerro's assistant, so hopefully Bonas would take a look, if they didn't already have the information. Andy Slavit, noted that this might be the thing, as colleges and universities try to re-open. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Go Bonas.

I just read the same thing from another source... it sounds very good.

The FDA has effectively killed this. It can be supported by private concerns as an "off label" measure, but support for its use as a widespread testing mechanism was shot down since without FDA approval companies will not likely invest in capabilities at scale.

I emailed the media relations people at Yale and they indicated that the FDA had not rescinded their approval of the SalivaDirect test. I had noted that the University of Illinois and Michigan State were proceeding down similar paths. Those are enormous student populations and regular testing with timely results will be critical in any attempts to stop a few cases of the virus, among their populations from spreading quickly. I know I'm going off the deep end here, but one of the areas that I think communities may utilize going forward is looking at the waste treatment plants, I know this is underway in a number of communities, civil engineers and/or biologists can sample waste treatment sewage and determine of there is co vid in the system somewhere and that's a lot faster than having to test the entire population. Again, I am hopeful that the science people, including those folks with expertise in these areas will come up with realatively inexpensive and timely testing procedures.

Unc announces today it’s stopping in person classes... due to student failures to do social distancing Hard to believe this won’t be extremely widespread

Merrimack College tests their students twice weekly. They charge each student a fee for this.

UNC....those " student athletes " never attended classes. So, now the rest of the student body is on the same program...give em all an A+

Let’s not panic for heavens sake - just like the whole virus thing, prudence please.

Definitely concerning. Especially happening to big programs. We shall see where they stand a few days from now. Remember those rules the B1G had for Ohio State? Well, they played with 20 guys testing positive. No way a handful of positive tests stop them now.
