Had to find a place my next piece of whining. Figured this thread was the best location. Big 10 Playing Football. Not a surprise - their Athletic Dept need the $, and saw that the three other leagues are playing, getting all the cash, and probably getting a leg up in recruiting. A financial decision.
What is driving me crazy is all these people writing Op Eds saying ridiculous things like "the Big 10 should hold itself to a higher standard", "not looking out for the athletes safety" etc. Really?? Lets be honest. If you are playing Big 10 football, 90% of the players are athletes who may actually go to class. Not student athletes. The players and their parents protested against the Big 10's original position, lawsuits were forming, several star players already said they were going to forgo the SPring Season (and therefore their fall and spring semesters) to train for the NFL. So these Op Eds are written either by "knowledgeable" writers who want to either keep feeding us a false premise (aka ESPN) regarding "student athletes" in the Big 10, or want things to be like they were 20 years ago.
These players are employees of their schools. Not students. They are like many other workers who are not working under Covid, who push their state governments to open up to allow them to get back to work. So they pushed their govt (the Big Ten) and the Big 10 folded. Because the league understood the employees (the players) had more power, that the player parents were willing to allow their children to participate, the Big 10 was bleeding $, and other leagues are playing with few complications.
And another rant. Rich schools like Stanford who cut sports because of Covid are lying to everyone. Covid is an excuse to get rid of sports that they had wanted to get rid of for awhile - had no revenue, and no alumni $ coming in. Stanford could afford those sports for the next 100 years. It is easier to hide behind Covid, than to face bad PR for their real reasons for cutting sports
