My law school roommate and life-long best friend is a Scranton native and alum of “Dah U” and remains active with the school, including teaching a course to grad students for several years now. When I heard that we were hiring someone from the admin at Scranton, I asked my friend about him. My buddy is a straight shooter and I value most of what he says. I have attached his reply below. The stuff at the end is just a friendly shot at me and elicited a response that I didn’t understand why he would question someone choosing to leave hell for heaven😅
"Jeff Gingrich is a real find for St Bona’s. He is probably early 50s, good communicator, and a good people fellow. I don’t know how much experience he has raising funds which is important for a President. When Fr Pilarz died, Jeff was appointed interim president pending our search for a successor to Fr Pilarz. If Scranton would have dumped their tradition of naming a Jesuit as the school’s president, there is no doubt that Jeff would have been the new president. I think there are only 5 Jesuit universities with Jesuit presidents. Scranton is one of them. Don’t think that is a good idea any more. So Jeff will do a great job at St Bona’s. I would, however question his judgment in leaving Scranton for St Bona’s. Cant figure that one out!"

Gino....look again at the equity, diversity, etc.,etc., section........look carefully. Skeller6 OK, I found it...you were pointing me to the University of Scranton's Mission Statement which seemed pretty innocuous. So what the issue is for you is Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Statement: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion As a Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher learning, The University of Scranton committed to providing a diverse, inclusive, educational, residential and working environment. This environment must be free of harassment and discrimination and must protect the rights and dignity of all members of the University community and guests. The inconvenient truth of history and systemic racism is that the lives of Black, Indigenous and People of Color have been treated in ways that suggest they have not mattered as much as White lives. Inequity and injustice persist in brazen and subtle ways. The historically unfair and unjust treatment of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) persists in present culture in brazen and subtle ways. The University of Scranton community joins in chorus with those who peacefully, but with righteous anger, shout for change -#BlackLivesMatter. A campus community that practices equitable and respectful treatment of all who learn, live and work here is not only our expectation; it is the core of our mission. The activities and plans shared here and elsewhere on the University’s website are not in themselves enough to transform any institution. We commit ourselves to be and grow as a community where everyone feels welcome and safe.

Some seem unaware SBU already has an extensive Equity, Diversity, Inclusion program--and several pages on school web site with many links and activities.

Completely unacceptable in every way to categorize certain races as being in line for special treatment. No one gave special treatment to the Irish when they arrived in this country in coffin ships following the horrendous "An Gorta Mor", the Great Famine, 1845 - 1850.
We strive for a color blind society not the opposite. Endorsing specific and extremely, controversial and far left advocacy groups is not helpful, its divisive. That is certainly inappropriate for a Roman Catholic university, especially in a time when Catholic churches, shrines and schools have come under violent attack, in fact over 100 specific such attacks have been reported in the United States since May 2020, from far left groups.

I think I know where you are coming from now. I would hope that things have changed in the last 170 years for the Irish, unfortunately that is not true for other groups. As far as the attacks on Catholic Churches, shrines and statuary...we are not alone, other church denominations have been attacked, as well as mosques, temples, and synagogues. Many of these are hate crimes, and to attribute these to far left groups is a stretch. I am sure that many far right groups have been involved as well. Look....I try to adhere to Franciscan values that I was exposed to at Bonas. I am not sure what our new president is going to bring to the table (that IS the topic of this thread) but we won't know for a few years. At that point we will have some data to review.
