ganyguy...Glad you posted "Terrific win" after the game.
You had 6 critical comments, that were well deserved. But went silent throughout the winning comeback.
We were all disheartened watching that first half. Clearly our players don't give up. Keep the faith!
VCU's longest road win stretch in the nation looked certain to some when up 20. Bonnies coming back to win by 5 shows intestinal fortitude that Bonnie fans should never give up on.

kccgold... We sure did dominate the paint.
+13 rebs, + 11 off boards!!, PIP 30-18, 2nd chance points off the off glass 16-3.
CHUCK top rebounder with 10 (6 were on the off glass). He was only 1-7 and 2-2FTs but his board play and game high 5 assists to 1 TO made a difference.

From Unfurled: *** After the game, Coach Schmidt praised his team’s resilience. “We showed some toughness tonight after VCU shot the heck out of the ball in the first half,” Schmidt said. He continued saying the run at the end of the first half was the key to turning the whole thing around. Schmidt then touched on the execution of his game plan by his team. “One of the keys today was to win the paint and we did that today,” he said. The 17th year Bonaventure headman continued to credit how his veteran team handled tonight’s adversity. “We got a mature team and I think they knew what they had to do," Schmidt said, “Some teams I’ve coached where when you’re down 20 it’s over but with the crowd, we were able to come back.”
Both Banks and Venning also weighed in on the comeback victory. “The run at the end of the first half was huge,” Banks said, “I kept telling the guys in the huddle to stick with it and keep fighting and we came back.” Venning then added to the team’s mentality on the court in these types of situations. “We have guys like Daryl and Moses that keep us together and we just needed to keep going and play hard,” said Venning.

Wild, in retrospect, my game "watching" tonight,"via this series of events.
--20 minutes before game starts, cable goes out in area for no apparent reason, which also knocks out our wifi.
--Not ready to figure out how to watch on phone, if even doable, so follow first 10 minutes on ESPN scoreboard.
--Remember it's on online radio, find that on phone, so listen for rest of half.
--At halftime, figure out how to get CBSnet on phone, via optimum, so watch 2nd half on tiny screen.
--Watch most of our comeback and then--with 1:15 left, phone conks out due to using all our Optimum data!!!! So no way for me to even check score and final.
--Turn phone off, wait 5 minutes, turn back on in hopes some data comes back, and yes, able to get final score and what happened in final seconds.
--Cable of course returns a little later....

Love beating the most arrogant fans in the a10, twice! And when we’re down by 20!
The offensive rebounds made in the 2nd half saved the game, way to keep the pressure and hustle gents

BONNIES open as 4.5 point favorites. Bonnies cover easily, never a doubt!

Thoughts on a great comeback by the Bonnies. In the first half VCU made 10-15 from 3s. In the 2nd half they made 1-10. Is there a better example of the cliche “you live by the 3 you’ll die from 3.” Why did VCU struggle with the 3 in the 2nd half? Following could have been factors. — Schmidt’s halftime adjustment. Ignore defending the paint. VCU is a jump shooting team with out any scoring inside. VCU’s 2 centers scored a total of 1 point. Bonnies only need to concentrate on challenging VCU’s jump shooters in the 2nd half. — VCU’s 3 top shooters from behind the arc played the most minutes (Shulga 34, Jackson 33 and Basimile 30). Three point shooting percentages decline with tired legs. Bonnies deeper bench might have been a key. Fresher legs can help in defending jump shooters. — Big key in the last 2 and a half minutes was Schmidt substituting for perimeter defense with Barry and Moses in for Chad and Assa. This allowed much better perimeter defense of the 3. Bonnies struggled with VCU’s shooters in the 1st half. On the other hand Bona dominated the paint throughout the game. — Points in the paint 30-18. — Offensive rebounds 16-5. — The big edge in offensive rebounds had Bonnies dominate second chance points 16-3. — Getting to the line is a killer stat for jump shooting teams. Bona outscored VCU 20-9 at the free throw line. 3 key players — Big difference after Mika entered the game. At a loss to why Kyrell has replaced Mika as a starter. Mika is the team’s 2nd leading scorer. Mika’s height allows him to be a better man defender. Mika also has much better shooting percentage from the field (51.7%-31.9%) and from 3s (44.9%- 23.1%) more than 3 times the number of assists (65-21) and per 40 minutes played, has almost half the number of turnovers (1.8 -3.5). — Chad was a key player for one big reason. VCU doesn’t have a big man like Chad, who requires double teaming in the low post. This creates for open shots for his teammates and allows teammates to have open lanes to the basket. VCU would be a scary team if they had a Chad on their team. — Despite his shooting struggles (1-7 from field) Chuck was critical in the win. Many of those second chance points mentioned above can be attributed to Chuck’s game leading 6 offensive rebounds. VCU’s entire team had just 3 players with 1 offensive rebound. Chuck also had the game high with a +11 when he was on the floor. gobonnies.com/documents/2024/1/30/2344542.PDFgobonnies.com/sidearmstats/mbball/media

Wgt: u are right..I was silent during the come back.. glued to my seat. I’ve been at Bonnie fan since I was six years old. I am an old fart now but I have seen alot of water go under the bridge… and this year I have wanted to jump off it! Our play is incredibly inconsistent- and why did it take an awful halfof basketball to start an aggressive defense of the three ball? There are legitimate reasons to be concerned about this team and it primarily relates to consistency. The Duquesne game was honestly a horror and I am hopeful we can put games like that to rest. Last night’s win HUGE. Heading to Dayton two games under 500 would have been a less than ideal situation. Hey,fandom in all sport. is what it is. There are no rules of decorum nor should there be. Fans are going to emote…for whatever reasons! Pax et bonum

I’m not gonna say I saw the comeback happening cause it was still highly unlikely.
But the thing is, you had to expect our guys to respond somehow. And honestly, VCU wasn’t controlling all facets or anything, they just had a kid who was hot from 3

Speaking of UD, Holmes 25/12 as Flyguys got back on track, throttled GW 83-61. He's a handful. Last year Bona defeated Dayton. A big reason for the win was Chad was a "handful" for Daron Holmes. Chad actually outscored Holmes from the field (16-14) making 8 of 9 shots. Chad tends to do well against thin centers like Holmes. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/boxscores/2023-02-04-00-st-bonaventure.html

CHUCK is correct in his "live and die by the 3", on the V C U board when they are not making stupid comments about Olean, BONA fans, SCHMIDT, A10 and Richmond Spiders, they are moaning about the Rams are lacking quality big men to work the ball to when beyond the arc shooting cools down.

And this year BONNIES have BROWN to further wear down HOLMES. HOLMES struggled in Richmond game at times against a bigger Spider center NEAL QUINN. HOLMES has been working on h is long range game this year so expect to see him launch a few 3s if left open.

That’s what I worry about though, Holmes plays more of a perimeter game now drawing Venning out from the post. Typically that has hurt us
