Sad and true — but not all great Bona players think that way or get over losses in 15 minutes…
Jalen Adaway missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer his junior year (?), then was seen shooting 3 point shots 20 minutes after the game for an hour. He came back strong that season and became our best all-around player and shooter his senior year.
Lofton would shoot in the RC practically every night to hone his craft. He would bite off his own hand rather than lose … and that was from Day 1 at Bonas. Yes he seemed to lose a step and his game didn’t improve much in 4 years but he was a beast of a competitor.
JR Bremer was not built that way. Jay Adams and Mobley were not built that way. Yes many players are that way but the great ones have a fire that burns all day and all night.

ASSA / BARRY / CHAD / NOEL - A decent CORE Group
LUC is likely gone ROSE & MARTINEZ - UNKNOWNs at this point.
Need 2 dynamic PG/Shooter types (Transfers or FROSH) and 1 PF type (Kaba ?). Tap that Putnam pipeline as hard as possible & see if any of our Canadian contacts can pull-in a diamond in the rough.

Can’t lie, Schmidt looked defeated when it came to the players and their emotions. I thought the same thing when I watched this. It's sad when the coach (and us fans) care more about the outcome of these games then the players. Not all of them but some of them for sure. Schmidt is too nice of a guy but he should have went all scorched earth in the presser last night like Pitino did for two days. Pitino said his players sucked and worse, actually naming three players for their lack of talent and athletic ability. Did the players quit and sulk? No. They all took it as a challenge and a "I'll show you" moment. Since then St John's has won five straight and has played themselves into the tournament. If Schmidt won't then I will. I'll name one player. Chad Venning. You are 6'10", 265lbs. You got thrown around yesterday underneath the hoop like a rag doll by guys half your size. In the last two games against the two worst teams in the conference, you had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 8 turnovers. Combined. Now you are going home to Brooklyn to play in front of your family and friends, maybe for the last time as a Bonnie. Go down there and dominate the paint and the boards. Throw your imposing size around. Carry this team on your back for the next two games and get us to a semi-final match on Saturday afternoon on national T.V vs Dayton, a team you have had success against the past two years. We will all be behind you. [/quote] In defense of Venning he had foul trouble. The guy has put in the effort to lose weight but he needs to play smarter. Some of it is coaching him up better. This group has bad chemistry and lacks focus at times. There is no leadership. We brought in two 5th year players and it hasn’t panned out. Their play has been inconsistent. Pride was a star until he got to the A10.

I think Schmidt was taking the high road. Instead of blasting his guys he made general comments about current players. He’s not like Pitino who grandstands and has an ego as big as Manhattan. Maybe that’s what these guys need but for Mark a post-game presser is not the time nor place.
It’s been a tough year for Mark. Not his finest season by any means but you have to respect how he keeps his professional when his players are coming up short in so many ways.

His game improved every year. I saw him alone in the gym during the summer before his senior year. I don't even think the gym lights were on but he had that Shooting cage out and was drenched in sweat shooting three after three. That's what it takes. Lofton jumper never improved and if it had who knows what type of player he would have been.

Geez, if Schmidt had openly blasted his players he’d be scorched here for it, and rightfully so IMO. But that’s just not his style and I am thankful for it. We don’t need the kind of coach who publicly blasts his players and deflects blame on them. We need to trust him to handle things internally. That’s his style and just because the last couple of years have produced inconsistent results doesn’t mean he has lost his edge or is a failure as a coach. He has his ways, and if you want the long term success he has brought the Program, I suggest you have to accept those ways even if you would prefer he do things differently and for some reason are certain you could produce better results. End of rant.

Unless he intends to go professional somewhere Venning should come back. I can see the draw of an European league contract, if that's on the table, young man should probably go for it, of course it depends on where and what the offer is.
But transferring elsewhere would be dumb, I don't see other schools giving him 30 MPG let alone designing their offense around him like he gets here. It would hurt his game to be a part time bench player for a year at a "bigger" conference. just my opinion
also, my opinion Rose could easily grab the reins here. I wouldnt transfer if I was him, all that hard work, he could step in and start next year. Also my opinion I feel kinda the opposite about Martinez. It might be better if he did move on

I liked what I saw in the Alfred game and I am sure he has improved this year going against the likes of Barry and Assa in practice.

Lofton jumper never improved and if it had who knows what type of player he would have been. I mean Lofton will still go down as one of the better PGs in Bona history. 1,600 points and 600 assists is pretty damn good. His only knock was his outside shot

Imagine if his outside jumper would have really improved? He would have really been special. That's all I said. I never said he wasn't good. Just stated if his jumper improved he would have been on another level. Also, probably would have done better on the gators the year he went there. Never said he was bad. Go argue with kCC bro. LOL.

"ROSE & MARTINEZ - UNKNOWNs at this point."
Clarification - UNKNOWN meaning I didn't see enough of them to determine if they would/could be big contributors next season. Same for Thompson (omitted in previous post).
I wouldn't expect any of those 3 to transfer - but who knows any more ...
