A lot of arguments are based on having to recruit now. Recruiting is done by email and telephone calls for the most part. How do we know the staff is recruiting now? They may be taking the week off to decompress from the season and meet their spouses and kids.

We have a basketball team (and the other sports) to attract student applicants to the university, provide an opportunity for student athletes to compete in DI athletics, raise our profile and reputation, generate revenue, and enhance community spirit, passion, and enthusiasm. As Mark said, athletics/MBball are the front porch of the university. The objective for all teams are to succeed, and that comes with competing and playing post season tournaments that provide the opportunity for exposure and, while slim, a chance for a national title.
Opting out of playing even a single post season game runs counter to the purpose of having athletic teams in the first place. Conceding post season play to start recruiting for next year's season..with the same goal of MAKING the post season, is a contradiction.
From the information provided to us, I cannot come to terms with the decision.
Side note. Would we have heard anything at all if ESPN had not shown the graphic with our name on it?

If Tom Izzo gets his way

I saw that about Tom Izzo. He has forgotten the times he coached at the small college level. Those coaching positions are stepping stones to higher levels and humongous pay. Now he feels that having to play small colleges in the early rounds is like walking through a mine field.

From the Buffalo News today.....
Coach Mark Schmidt on a possible NIT bid "Yeah, hopefully! Who knows? I don't know what they think" the NIT "but we won 20 games. I've been here 17 years, and I think we only done that five other times. This was the sixth time that we won 20 games. We had a good year. It was up and down. The last game never defines you"
AD Manhertz three days later, stating regarding the portal "That would have left us at a competitive disadvantage. Together, athletics administration and the coaching staff made the decision in the best interests of our student-athletes". Apparently Manhertz notified the NIT pro actively that Bonas would not accept an NIT invitation.
AD Manhertz needs to terminated immediately. Never in the history of Bona athletics have we turned down a post season invitation, which was apparently in this specific case, in bound.
This is the most disgraceful action by a Bona AD since 2003. Possibly in Bona history. In Schmidt we Trust.........
Would Steve Watson or Tim Kenney have turned down an NIT entree? NFW

When the season starts the goal of every team in every league is to get to the postseason. There is absolutely no excuse for the Bona administration and coaching staff to come to the decision to advise the NIT Selection Committee BEFORE the selections are even made to decline participation in their tournament. NO EXCUSES. Travel, portal, injuries, whatever, is just noise. This was a complete blunder. If selected, you go with the players eligible. If not selected, you begin the process of working towards next year's goal: TO GO TO THE POSTSEASON.

I still can't get over and don't understand how there wasn't an adult in the room that sat down with all the players and explained the value of playing in the NIT. Even if ALL of our players jumped in the portal, what would be better than showcasing yourself for a game (or multiple games) on national television beforehand?
That kind of leadership starts with the AD. As I've said before, I've never met the man (which is wild in its own right), but I'm very sure he's not as actively involved in the day-to-day as needed at a place like St. Bonaventure.
The arrogance of the statement (which took almost a full day to write) was ridiculous. The fact that more paragraphs had to be added to an additional season ticket member statement is even more ridiculous. And you can't even begin to tell me that even if we had 6 guys and a few walk-ons that members of the 6th Man Club and Team Unfurl and large BAF donors wouldn't be on the first flights to wherever we were playing. Not to mention students and alums who aren't courted by the administration since they're not big enough donors.
Asking for money throughout the entire conference championship week and then complaining about the operational logistics of an NIT road game in which the team would get paid to travel is obnoxious.
Again - the decision is the decision. The lack of any kind of PR understanding, knowledge of the fan base, research of the meaning of the tournament, and the abhorrent statement that followed is very, very bad. And shows you what kind of trouble we're in when Mark decides to retire.

I haven't read all these posts so this may have been mentioned already, apologies if so...
My biggest complaint is the season was not finished. We, as fans paid to watch Bonnie basketball for as long as possible. NCAA tournament and NIT are still the top tier tournaments in my opinion. We should have accepted a NIT bid if offered and played with who we had. I will worry about next year after this season was over. We could've played was the bottom line. If Woods and other players didn't show up, they would have that mark on their careers the rest of their lives. This is a business now and I was screwed.

That this unforeseen event of nixing a post-season play opportunity has garnered the top spot on the list of "lessons learned" from the past season, deeply saddens me for the distractor effect it's seemingly having. Learn a bit about displacement, and shifting focus/anger towards a more convenient target. Usually feels good to vent and release negative emotions. But realize doing so doesn't facilitate the avoidance of tripping on the same stones twice.

I don't get what the rhubarb is. SBU was on the outside looking in regarding the NIT. Nobody knows if we were gonna get an invite.
The season was a mess. A couple of our high profile transfers had buyers remorse early in the season and looked like they were counting down the days for the end of the season.
Both of our centers were banged up to the point they were liabilities on the court.
Barry and Luc seemed like they made their decision to seek greener pastures due to lack of meaningful minutes and the early SCHMIDT hooks off the court well before the A10 Tourney
Someone made a courtesy call to the NIT and said we are not in a position to field a competitive team.
Over a dozen of other programs declined NIT invites, it was not like it was just SBU.
Sh!t happens, time to move forward

And shows you what kind of trouble we're in when Mark decides to retire. He's trying to live in 3 different places across the country and still be Athletic Director here. Bona's for better or worse is not a place where the "corporate style" standard works. We are unique and when you get it you get it. Clearly Manhertz doesn't get it. Maybe his globetrotting is making him slow to get it as he's not exactly new any more. Maybe at a Duke or a Syracuse or Colgate (lol) you can try to hide a decision like snubbing the NIT and not expect fall out. Maybe in those places you can, "corporate style" break the news to a select group of donors only, or first. But not here. I think anyone with experience with this campus and community could've told him that

WOW....this is a SPICEY TOPIC with tons of opinions...Could you imagine if the squad played with the same level of passion the Bandwagon faithful are demonstrating?? Not sure how many transfers will ever appreciate our "GOOD JOURNEY" and what Bona Hoops means to us....Adaway-Mobley and Holmes may be the last to ever fully embrace BONA's as transfers... I will hold out hope but as we all know "HOPE" is not a strategy.
