Funny thing. I keep thinking of the poster who describes our basketball players as “these fine young men.”

Chris, I appreciate your posts, but if Bonas turning down an NIT appearance is true, suggesting that the Athletic Department lie by denying it is just not good advice.
I am sick about the fact that our Bonas turned down the opportunity to play in the NIT. I am sick about the fact that we have lost Barry Evans and Kyrell Luc. Both players have big upside potential and should have been starters next year.
To get your 3 point shooters an opening with a second of time to line things up, you need a point guard who beats their defender on the dribble, slashes to the basket, draws defenderrs in, then lasers a pass to the open guy on the wing or top or circle so that he has a second of time to line up his three. Mika was a decent player, generally good in protecting the ball with a very few glaring exceptions over the season, but only average in beating his man on the dribble. Stationary dribbling above the top of the key for ten seconds at a a time then often throwing looping, lollipop passes to the wing allows the wing's defender to recover. Our point guard play should have developed a lot more open looks for Assa and others. I felt that Luc was an excellent, spirited defender. Yes he made some mistakes as I submit the others did as well. There should have been a little more looking forward by coaching, by using Barry and Kyrell more, as well as also communicating that they would have greater roles next year.
I'm sick about how much Bonas loses in the portal. Obviously what we're doing with bringing in one year guys is not developing the school loyalty and spirit that we are hoping for in our players.
Yoiu've got an excellent recruit coming in in Ebrahim Kaba and you've got a couple of potentially excellent players on your bench in Miles Rose and Duane Thompson. Perhaps our coaching staff can focus on improving these young men to be the best their talents allow, while giving them a positive basketball experience going forward. Its time to figure out how to counteract the negative effects of the NIL and transfer portal, and get back to having 4 year standout Bona players who hear their last cheer from the graduation stage.

There was a Bluebird Bus in the back of the RC ready to leave for the game but only 1 player showed up...
Oh wait, that was another time the team quit.

Just now via the Buffalo News:
"In a statement to The Buffalo News, the NCAA says St. Bonaventure indicated to the NIT selection committee that they should not be considered for the tournament. This story will continue to be updated."

Schmidt was likely holding out for another raise before agreeing to "coach". The wire didn't hit his account quick enough so he withdrew the team from consideration.
This is a lost opportunity for the fans and the school. I won't be able to pull out my 2024 NIT champions t-shirt 40 years from now to show my grandchildren. What a disgrace.

NCAA: St. Bonaventure indicated it should not be considered for NIT Rachel Lenzi 18 mins ago 1 A10 St Bonaventure Duquesne Basketball (copy) (copy) St. Bonaventure players react after Saturday’s loss to Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Conference semifinals.

Rachel Lenzi The NCAA, which oversees the National Invitation Tournament, told The Buffalo News in a statement on Wednesday that St. Bonaventure men's basketball team indicated to the tournament selection committee that it should not be considered.
The statement came after ESPN report circulated a report Tuesday night during a NIT broadcast that the Bonnies were one of 17 programs that turned down a bid to the tournament.
Bona’s athletic department has not immediately responded to The News for comment regarding the report.
Following the Bonnies’ 70-60 loss to Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament semifinal Saturday in Brooklyn, Bona coach Mark Schmidt was asked if the Bonnies’ performance during the Atlantic 10 Tournament could have garnered possible invitations to postseason tournaments, and if an NIT bid was offered, would the Bonnies take it?

"Who knows? I don’t know what they think, but we won 20 games. I’ve been here 17 years, and I think we’ve only done that five other times. This was the sixth time that we won 20 games. We had a good year. It was up and down. The last game never defines you. Very few teams win that last game.”
Bona went to the NIT semifinals in March 2022.
The Bonnies finished 20-13 and 9-9 in the Atlantic 10, and are No. 87 in the NET rankings, a sorting tool the NCAA Tournament committee uses to select the 68-team NCAA Tournament field, which includes 32 conference tournament winners and 36 at-large bids.
Of the 15 Atlantic 10 teams, Bona is fifth in the NET rankings, behind Dayton (23), VCU (71), Richmond (73), Duquesne (80) and Loyola Chicago (85). St. Joseph's NET ranking is 92, behind the Bonnies (87).
Duquesne earned the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, and Dayton earned an at-large bid. Richmond, Loyola Chicago, VCU and Saint Joseph’s are in the 32-team NIT field.
Besides Bona, the schools that ESPN reported turned down NIT bids are: Arizona State, California, Florida State, Indiana, Maryland, Memphis, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, St. John’s, Stanford, Syracuse, UCLA, USC and Washington.
Memphis coach Penny Hardaway told reporters Thursday at the American Athletic Conference Tournament that the Tigers would not accept an NIT bid.
"I’m not looking to play any more NIT games, man," Hardaway said. "I’m sorry. I’m not disrespecting the NIT. It’s just, it’s been a tough season already."
Pittsburgh said in a statement Sunday that it was team decision to decline a bid to the NIT. St. John's immediately made its decision known.
"After thorough consideration of all that goes into postseason participation, we believe at this time it is best for our team and basketball program to prepare for next season," St. John's coach Rick Pitino said in a statement Sunday.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

According to the article, we did not turn down a bid. We said don't ask. Have to assume we would have gotten bid--since St. Joes got in....in any case, we said, "not interested."

From Manhertz just now (players not involved in decision):
We understand that ESPN posted a graphic regarding the selection of the NIT Tournament field on air Tuesday night.
Reaching the NCAA Tournament is the goal for St. Bonaventure basketball each year. We unfortunately came up short of that goal. Considering the logistics of what would have been an NIT road game, we made the proactive decision Sunday afternoon to inform the NIT selection committee of our concerns regarding roster uncertainty given injury and the transfer portal that would have left us at a competitive disadvantage. Together, athletics department administration and the coaching staff made the decision in the best interest of our student-athletes.
No invitation was extended prior to our conversation with the NIT committee. We respect the NIT and not only its history overall, but what the tournament has meant to our program. We look forward to future postseason competition.
