We are out ahead of the others in the area and much more focused. This is why we should drop SUNY Amherst from our schedule. I think the estimate on their collective ($300,000 or whatever) is not accurate, I doubt its that high and that's not even a huge number. And they are trying to play football! Most the funds will go there. They will be bad at basketball for the foreseeable future. Oh but MAC football is really drawing crowds

This is why we should drop SUNY Amherst from our schedule. Dropping UB from the schedule probably costs us $80K. While they were awful last year, they still are the only H&H on our OOC that has show any ability at all of fielding a competitive team most years. Drop CC and NU if you want. I still think there is some value both in scheduling $$ saved and with playing games in Buffalo and Albany every year. If we dropped all of our NYS rivals I wouldn't be heartbroken, but they'd most likely be replaced with Coppin State, Delaware State, UMES and Lafayette. I also highly doubt our MBB budget has $300-400K lying around to dump our traditional rivals. A simple solution would be to replace those games with Princeton, Yale, Cornell and Vermont most years, but that probably makes too much sense. Why play Q1/2 road games when you can play a bunch of Q3/4 road games?

Their coaches are better too than the Villanova video/IT guy coaching in Amherst. Idk about the list of other random teams you cited. I don’t see how dropping them cost us $80K, I don’t believe that’s accurate

I don’t see how dropping them cost us $80K, I don’t believe that’s accurate Bona is paying CSUN $75K for their November trip. Replacing those annoying games costs a good chunk of change. There’s a lot of competition for the bad buy games because they are usually non-competitive and many other bigger schools are looking to fill their schedule with teams that’ll help them inflate their Net.

I don’t see how dropping them cost us $80K, I don’t believe that’s accurate Saying Canisius and Niagara are all in on basketball is like saying UMass is all in on football. Technically true, but there is no historical or recent success, they play in dumps, and there is no fanbase. Canisius and Niagara devote almost no money to their programs. Playing Canisius and Niagara home and home is a relic that needs to go away (Not to mention the ridiculousness of playing at Siena and creating a fake trophy). It would be hard to find many fans under the age of 60 who care about those games. Other A-10 teams don’t play home and homes with these types of teams because they know all it does is provide a potential pitfall by going on the road. UB is a team with recent success, and despite their poor last year and possibly incompetent coach, I have a lot more faith in them turning it around than Canisius (who gave Reggie Witherspoon 8 years) and Niagara (2 winning seasons since Mihalich left) ever being relevant again.

Why though do you have more faith they will turn it around? I don’t. Look that article was about NIL collectives. Bona’s, NU, CC, whatever they have is going towards basketball. SUNY Amherst though is trying to make that pathetic football team work! They really want to get into the Maalox Indigestion Bowl on ESPN 8! There’s like 90 players on a football team, what little funds they have left chasing that bowl game dream will go towards their basketball program and their IT guy coach. They will be terrible for the foreseeable future

You need to separate Niagara and Canisius. Two separate and distinct beasts here.
Canisius' field house, the Koessler Center is just an upscale high school gymnasium. Their fan base is small but very loyal i.e.: the Blue and Gold Club. It is very difficult to attract quality MBB players when your team plays in such a pathetic facility, not even counting the massive impact of the NIL scam.
Niagara by contrast, has a small field house, recently renovated, and while not comparable to the RC, its an adequate facility and with a much warmer feel than the cavernous old Convention Center (now the Seneca Niagara Casino in NF by the way). Its fan base is not as large as Bonas, but intensely loyal.
In my humble estimation from watching the Little Three for over five decades, I would have to say that Niagara has the advantage here. Both now have stable and skilled coaches. The question will be, as it is for all mid major programs, can they recruit competitive players in a corrupt atmosphere of NIL and salaries?
Only time will tell...............we have our own problems operating in this corrupt system, which we appear to be navigating in decent form for the time being.

UB is just a massive state run, woke SUNY socialist institution, without a heart or soul or centerpiece.
For its enormous size, its fan base for football and MBB are incredibly small. Attendance fluctuates wildly for both sports depending on the opponent.
The football program has had some minor bowl successes, and MBB has had some very decent coaches, including the now Alabama and Arizona State HCs.
UB problem has always been the lack of energy in the fan base. Its size is comparable to the Power 5, but its enthusiasm is light years away. Certainly the dual campus set up. The lack of a real campus center community impacts the amount of energy in the fan base. It has no soul.
UB has no baseball, soccer or swimming teams, as most of the athletic budget is consumed by D1 football.
Compare that to the life long, intense loyalty exhibited by the legion of the Brown and White. There is really no comparison.
As a grad of both SBU and UB, I could care less about UB athletics. If we dropped them from our schedule tomorrow it would not bother me one single iota.

I am sure you are aware of the bills and andsabres…sucking up every vapor of fan enthusiasm possible in wny Ub is a public educational institution…education is its primary function …just like Allegany high school If you went there i’ m guessing it was because of its educational program or the convenience of its location…or possibly because it’s state school tuition was more affordable….maybe all of those Alabama and Mississippi have great athletic programs and are in poor states…their programs are athletic factories…not much is heard about their academic programs I’m happy ub is a resource available to New Yorkers

Dropping UB is not a problem. Niagara and Canisius should stay but at the RC only unless there's s doubleheader at Key Bank Center. Canisius vs Bonnies, UB vs. Niagara on the Friday or Saturday on Thanksgiving Weekend.

Canisius vs Bonnies, UB vs. Niagara on the Friday or Saturday on Thanksgiving Weekend. Who foots the bill and who gets the gate revenue? I think that's the reason why this type of event is a thing all that frequently. Key Bank is far too big and expensive for this type of event. CC, NU and UB really don't show up for these games. It would be nice to have a game like this, but I don't think SBU or any of the schools have much interest in this type of event most years. In addition to that, if you're playing two games at Key Bank, then you're losing home game revenue.

Why not play NU in Rochester? I do not like the idea of losing an A10 home game to Rochester, but Niagara has a strong alumni base in Rochester or at least they did at one point.
To me that sounds like a nice annual event or possibly every other year. I hate playing at NU and CC. We do need to move beyond it.
Do our alums in Buffalo really want to continue that rivalry? It’s hurt us more than helps during the last decade … almost like our players are unmotivated and play our worst games of the season vs NU and CC.

Why not play Princeton, Vermont, Utah State or any good mid major game in Rochester? Probably would be much easier to attract a top MM to Rochester over the Reilly Center. I believe there is new ownership/management of the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, so maybe the cost of playing a game there is more attractive now than it was in the past. Rochester Arena, LLC took over management of the arena in October of 2019, and that was the last year we played in Rochester.
