For those like.me who don’t closely follow cal state north ridge it is in L.A.. Last year it was 9th in its league out of 11 teams. It has about 32,000 students and minorities are about 70% of the student body. Paying 75,000 to have them come to Allegany.. hopefully they have gps.I’m guessing they don’t follow wny teams? Cornell, Binghamton,Colgate, Albany state,Hofstra, ….all closer.

Exactly, I would rather schedule Siena home and away, Binghamton (large alum base), Canisius and Niagara home and away (huge alum base) , Cornell, LeMoyne (large alum base)........would never buy tickets for a Cal Northridge game......OM gosh....

I read about the UNLV QB in another article. His team is undefeated, he was recruited to play there after 4 years at Holy Cross, but he says UNLV did not come thru with their $ promises. So he just announced he is redshirting!! Now the interesting rumor here is that someone offered him more $$, so he is redshirting so he can take a higher offer. 3 games into the season, undefeated. Crazy. The link below is an interesting opinion on what the LSU coach is saying, and the writer is pulling in NIL issues into the article. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2024/09/25/hugh-freeze-auburn-quarterbacks-criticism-nil/75367061007/?tbref=hp

I think it is tough! My immediate reaction was that this QB is selfish, a bad guy, a bad teammate, etc. but this whole NIL landscape is so messed up, what recourse does a player have if/when he is made promises that aren't kept. It appears he is over delivering on his commitment to the team but (if he is telling the truth) his NIL commitments aren't being met by the folks who made him promises.
Now there is no ruling body to step in and say who is right and who is wrong because the NCAA has basically no power to arbitrate such agreements. I assume the kid is hating this because they have a great thing going at UNLV this year and have a chance to do something special but the player feels like he's getting screwed and his only leverage is to say "if you don't do what you said you were going to do I'm not playing".
Maybe more will come out and I will be proven completely wrong about this player, but what a mess college athletics has turned into. It won't stop me from rooting for our Bonnies and being totally excited about what Woj is going to bring to our program, but college athletics just feels so much different and not in a good way.

I saw another article that says he was allegedly promised $100K. Which I think would be cheap for a D1 starting QB. UNLV was undefeated, closing in on becoming Bowl eligible. Bad look for them - future recruits will have their doubts about their NIL.
I completely understand your frustration in your first paragraph. But I have gotten to the point with NIL that it is employer - employee issue. If an employer stiffed you, what would you do? Forget the smoke screen of what colleges have floated for years = student athletes, etc. No more "winning one for the Gipper, or ole University" - its a business relationship. in my own company, we have had some talented folks leave for alot more $ over the last 3 years. Maybe not greener pastures, but more $ at least in the short term.
And your last phrase is 100% on the $. "college athletics just feels so much different and not in a good way."

“…not in a good way” for sure. IMO this is the apex of the threat of NIL. Here’s a kid who as a teammate presumably formed a bond with teammates and worked together to achieve success on the field and in the midst of doing so quits on them because he not getting the money he was promised, clearly letting down the team, his school and placing his own interests ahead of his team’s. And Dadster you are correct that if this had happened to any of us in a job environment we’d have done the same thing, which in a way is a shame. Perhaps foolishly I still like to think that sports, particularly college sports, should be different and that players are better off being motivated by, and I almost laugh at myself about the next phrase, the love of the game. I lived most of my life in an employer-employee atmosphere and enjoy college sports at least in part because it is NOT that. Hopefully this is a single, isolated situation and will not become a regular happening, but I don’t know. Somehow, this happening at UNLV seems about right and far away from Bonas geographically and philosophically.

NIL is just an obvious outcropping of complete corruption in every single way............it will in time destroy college sports and poison the well of fan support.
College athletes receive generous benefits, they are in no need of corrupt payoffs, unlimited free agency, kickbacks or salaries.
They already receive full college scholarships (in the major sports, partial scholarships in the minor sports), free room and board, free tuition, free clothing, and generous monthly stipends.
Over a four year career these benefits amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars in benefits. College is not a career, its the beginning of life's journey, its not the end all and be all, it prepares you, if you accept the preparation, for life challenges and triumphs.................

Personally, I am not a fan of NIL....But... the SEC, ACC, big 10, big 12 and the old Pac have practiced their own versions of NIL for many many decades..heck, even the Ivies have their own version of legal work arounds..[ see armond hill @ sbu..ahem @ princeton] ...Saints calipari, huggins, al maguire, frank maguire, K and roy williams knew exactly where the mendoza line is/was...and they had squads of attorneys providing " guidance " along the way
anyone who thinks that D1 scholarship kids shouldnt get a piece of the $ pie has blinders on...95% of these kids at P5 schools have to go to classes and then put in 40-50 hours a week with their respective teams. up until the last couple of years...dear old state U reaped all of the $ benefits....many of these D1 kids leave with no degree in hand and even more disturbing...injuries which will hamper them for a lifetime. From what i see, parents are a big part of this dilemma...many are in love with declaring that their spawn is playing D1 sports...other parents pilfer scholarship $ from their own kids....for example...if a scholarship player lives off campus..they collect a stipend for rent and food at the first of every month...often times...parents are taking their cut off of the top...how can a kid say no to mom and dad ? many parents view their kids as their own meal ticket.. the whole system is full of BS and needs to be re designed...but, the $$ has gotten so big...the kids deserve a piece of the pie...

Derhut - I like your perspective, starting with the presumption that by bringing things out in the open, it has the prospect of leveling things presuming the big boys were able to pay their guys under the table, something we were not able to compete with and at least now we can, even if on a smaller scale. I also agree something has to be done to reign things in a bit. I think the answer there is limita on transfers, something the schools can take control of. Not long ago, I started a thread about Seth Greenberg’s comments at the Coaches v. Cancer dinner suggesting limitations on transfers which I thought were reasonable and agree could help bring things back under control.
Also,I should add that with Beretta, Schmidt and now Woj at the wheel, we have the opportunity to steer clear of the iceberg and continue with the trip.

Double post, repeating my post from the “NIL issues popping up” thread. Why ? we need to remain positive , so: All is not lost to the Almighty $. After today, both Army and Navy are 4-0 in college football and likely on track for bowl games. It’s all about finding the right guys. Obviously Bona hoops is not analogous to the military academies, but then again we only need a few guys of the right mindset, meaning someone who will not chase every last dollar. I put my money on Schmidt and Woj and the rest of the staff finding them, essentially putting us ahead of the Programs filled with yearly transfers chasing money and finding frustration instead. We can actually come out of this by providing something different and special, which I suggest we always have. Remember how everyone always thought Bonas couldn’t compete for recruits because it location was so isolated “there was nothing to do there.” But what did Schmidt do? He turned that supposed negative around by selling the location, telling kids and parents that the isolation meant Bonas is where you should go if you’re serious about basketball and want to focus on it and not be distracted by everything else there was to do. Buck up, we have had success taking a supposed negative and turning it into a positive. Have faith and Trust in Schmidt.
