Word from Ohio is that Kent State got the best of the Bonnies for the majority of Saturday’s closed scrimmage. This was not a surprise based on the make-up of the two rosters.
They played two halves, with the veteran Flashes winning both by single digits. The margin was more decisive for most of half #2 before the Bonnies rallied late.
Important to note that this was Kent’s second scrimmage in 9 days which makes a big difference. Kent was much better vs the Bonnies than how they played in their first one vs N.Ky.
The Flashes have a balanced, talented, well-coached, unselfish team that was one bonehead play away from winning the MAC Tourney Championship vs Akron last season despite key injuries. In contrast, this was the first semi-real action for an all-new Bona team with the exception of one player (Noel).
Most polls have Kent ranked in the top 3 of their conference along with Ohio and Akron. The Flashes always play the Bonnies tough in this annual pre-season meeting. They return 4 of their top 5 players and added several quality D1 transfers.
As expected, Bona played like a group that is still trying to figure things out. Melvin and Noah were more effective than other guys. Kent’s backcourt and center dominated throughout much of both sessions.
Hopefully the scrimmage provided some good video tape for Schmidt’s staff … and is a learning experience for the players. Just a starting point.

Thanks for the insight. No harm in losing a closed door scrimmage. It’s probably going to take some time for this thing to gel, so this is hardly the worst thing that could happen. I can’t stomach losing to Canisus again. Let’s see how it looks Wednesday.

The UMass basketball coach was heard to lament going to the MAC. Many here said UMass was taking a step down. Now the Bonnies can't measure up to the third best team in the MAC. The result of this scrimmages is a bad omen for the Bonnies.

The result of this scrimmages is a bad omen for the Bonnies. A) It is a SCRIMMAGE B) The top MAC teams are solid programs year in, year out. We beat Akron by 1 point last year. Kent has gone toe to toe with Houston and Gonzaga the last two seasons when both were ranked in the top 5. C) Players are more apt to listen and learn when they lose. D) Schmidt wants the annual scrimmage vs Kent because he knows they are well coached and a good measuring stick. E) UMass will be challenged to finish in the top 3 of the MAC.

The result of this scrimmages is a bad omen for the Bonnies. LET'S CANCEL THE SEASON. KENT STATE has 5 key returning players. Also, it was a scrimmage and you don't know how Schmidt distributed playing time. Holy hell. this board is nuts.

I think it’s Alfred not Alfred State but either way it’s time for an upgraded game there

Give Maplehurst some slack. He just tends to be negative. Last season he kept bashing the A-10, comparing them to a low major conference and gave a low prediction of the Bonnies. Bonnies had a 20 win season (just the 6th in Schmidt’s career at Bona). A-10 also had a good season with the 8th best NET conference ranking. Overall the A-10 matched up well with the Power-6 conferences. -- A10’s winning percentage was 67.21% which was higher than the PAC-12 (65.12%). -- A10's winning percentage was extremely close to the Big East with just a 1.96% winning percentage better than A-10. -- By far the best low major conference is the Missouri Valley with a 60.33% winning percentage, which is well below the A-10. Next best low major barely had a winning percentage in the low 50s. A-10 is a lot closer to the Power 6 than a low major. Maplehurst statements shouldn’t upset everyone. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/men/www.warrennolan.com/basketball/2024/net-conference

I'm not sure about Kccgold's statement "it’s time for an upgraded game there." Can you imagine the reaction on the Bandwagon, if Bona had a headline like this one “Syracuse loses stunner to D2 LeMoyne.” With Schmidt having just one returning veteran, that last thing they need is a competitive exhibition game. This team needs time to develop chemistry. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/news/story?id=4620949

I would prefer a more difficult challenge to gear up for the season. Since we have played Alfred in the exhibition every year it's a blow out game with the starters playing sparingly. Alfred's roster does show 1 6'9 guy this season but other than that they are 6'5 and below. That's not helping this team prepare for D1 competition in my opinion by the way, I would love to play an exhibition against a very good D2 team like your example from Syracuse/LeMoyne in the past. Even if we lost!

I lean towards the benefits of “winning”.

Bonnies 2022-23 basketball team was very similar to this team with just 1 returning veteran (Justin Ndjock-Tadjore). Thank goodness they didn’t play an “upgraded team” as they led Alfred by just 9 points at halftime. Like this team, the Bonnies need to develop much needed chemistry and allow the last players on the bench some playing time, which they will not see much of during the regular season. A close win or even worse a loss during the exhibition would NOT be helpful. Believe this is part of the thought process when they developed this season's weak OOC schedule. I would feel different if Bonnies had more experience coming back to the team. gobonnies.com/sports/mens-basketball/stats/2022-23/alfred/boxscore/5779
