Love HINSON and what he brings to the table, but yesterday, early when he came into the game, he was struggling offensively. SCHMIDT stuck with HINSON but he continued to be a little off. In this case, the BONNIES needed some "instant offense" at this point perhaps ROSE off the bench for an offensive series or two may have been worth a try. What I have liked about this year's edition of the BONNIES is how they have answered other teams' scoring, not allowing runs on them like previous BONA teams have allowed. That 17-3 was one of the fatal flaws in their loss yesterday.

Good call on ROSE - why not give him some minutes there (assuming Jaxon was unavailable)? He could certainly hold it down on the Defensive end from what I've seen. HINTON had the "deer in the headlights" look when he got in. Appeared to be rushing his shot - he normally has a very smooth stroke from 3. Knocked down a big one late - could have used 1 or 2 of them earlier on for sure.

Hermit, who over cooked your turkey today? Yikes! This team if nothing else is going to be entertaining all year. Just enjoy the ride this year. They are learning to play basketball the Schmidt way and should get consistently better. I cooked the turkey, and it came out dry! Maybe that’s it. Possibly I placed too much of an expectation on last nights game. A lot of “ifs”. If we hit our free throws, we win. If Jonah had hit 2 more of his threes, we win. If we had fewer turnovers, possibly we win. It wasn’t their big guys, it wasn’t their guards…..it was their bench that did us in. We do a lot of things well. Go back to a post I had before the season started……hit timely shots and limit turnovers. Turnovers are down, yes. But Bonnies have trouble scoring from the outside, and I just don’t see a solution to that. Like I said, I hope I’m wrong. You a Navy fan?

1) Agree on the BENCH - NOEL gets in Foul Trouble against a good team and we are in deep do-do ... That is our glaring weakness (IMO).
2) Outside scoring was certainly a contributor yesterday ... Chance hit a couple early - but that was "fools gold" I'm afraid. Chance - Dasonte & Melvin are 30% type guys. Jonah & Lajae have the best looking strokes from Deep - need them to consistently knock them down at a better clip.

Stealing a line from Unfurl “It was our first measuring stick and we learned a lot about the team.” Overall it was a very good performance.
— Never thought I would say this about a team that finished 41st in the AP, but without a doubt the Bonnies were the more athletic team. — Bonnies athleticism leads to periods of incredible defense. This game makes it clear that defense is the signature of this team. — Noel was the best big man on the court. Understand the foul concern affected his PT, but Noel finished with just 3 fouls. Really could have used him during the 2nd half run by Utah State. Solid game from Noel. — Dasonte was impressive with attacking the basket among the trees of Utah St. — Chance athleticism just stood out. — 6’4” Melvin was the leading rebounder in this game. Impressive accomplishment considering the height of Utah St. and considering they are the 34th best rebounding team in the nation. — Bonnies defensive rebounding was a key stat. Utah State has thrived on the boards, which feeds their 20+ fast break points (for every game this season). Bonnies controlling the defensive boards limited them to 13 fast break points, just 3 more than Bonnies.
Bonnies created a lot of good shots, but just could NOT make them. Shooting remains a big concern. Too bad Jonah struggled with his shot. An average Jonah very well might have been enough to win this game.

Night and day compared to last year’s team. After most losses last season — and some wins — many of us dwelled on and posted about the Bonnies’ many careless mistakes and less than 100% effort too often. Not so much as players individually, but more as a collective effort. Like they weren’t totally buying in and busting their butts. No cohesion or flow on many nights. Lots of shot-makers but no CONSISTENT prime time player(s) who could be counted on to deliver wins under pressure.
Maybe that was perception, though the feeling was real for me. Yesterday was a gutsy, aggressive, entertaining performance from the Bonnies … as a TEAM. Most guys did not have their best games on offense, but they worked together, especially on D where the effort was tremendous.
It leaves me a bit disappointed that we let it slip away against a top 30 caliber opponent… but I am waaaaay more optimistic this morning than at any point during 2023-24.
This group is going to improve. Hopefully more guys will be contributors. They need to prove tonight as a group that USU was a learning experience, and the Bonnies can bounce back strong. Show that they have the fire that gets re-ignited after a tough defeat.
The USU game was important for national exposure and respect. NIU is vital for our confidence and mojo … to take back the momentum we lost last night. That was the first National TV game for some of our guys like Hinton, Jones, Folarin and Thompson. Hopefully we all play clear and free vs UNI.

Agree with 82.5 "Chance hit a couple early - but that was "fools gold" I'm afraid. Chance - Dasonte & Melvin are 30% type guys. Jonah & Lajae have the best looking strokes from Deep - need them to consistently knock them down at a better clip." Let me add Duane, who currently has the 2nd best 3% on the team at 35.7%. If Duane gets hot he can be deadly from 3s. Against Utah St., Bonnies needed another shooter and Duane only plays 8 minutes? There is NO way Chance should be 2nd on the team in attempted 3s. Jonah has just 2 more attempted 3s than Chance with 31. Even made worse with Melvin being closely behind with 28. Or how about Dasonte shooting a brutal 13.3% has more attempted 3s than Duane. Chance, Melvin and Dasonte are great players inside the arc, but shooting 3s is Not their game. They need to leave it to Jonah, Lajae and Duane. I'm completely lost to explain Noah, who had a solid 3 in FIBA, as a professional and during pickup games. It is looking like we will never see it. Sadly reminiscent of Linton Brown and Planutis, who discover their 3 point stroke after leaving Bona. Still crossing fingers we will see Noah's solid 3 point shot this season, becuase Bonnies need another 3 point shooter. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/men/2025.html

Hinton is only playing 15 mpg. How is he going to have more 3-Pt FG attempts than Chance or anyone else?
Chance was 2/5 from deep yesterday. That’s a good number of attempts for him. Schmidt is not doing a good job of figuring out how to get our best shooters the ball in the right spots vs the zones. Or maybe guys are not executing??
Brown does not get enough quantity touches in the paint.
LJ is not getting great looks from deep.
We are having trouble getting the ball to the high post other than Melvin’s running floaters.
Hilton is getting the best looks from deep. He looked a little nervous yesterday which is understandable for a Juco transfer who is not getting as many minutes as he needs to get into the game flow. It also was his first national tv game.
This likely is not going to be a team that wins a lot of games from deep. Looks like it’s going to be reliant on defense and points in the paint.
We made the same amount of threes yesterday as USU. that is a win. We just can’t get out-scored by 12 points at the line AND by 11 points off fast breaks. That disparity is a formula for disaster. Bonnies were able to hang in there regardless.

I still say Utah State is a good team, time will tell, in the short run you can tune in at 6 PM and catch their game versus North Texas. When you consider all the things that went south for a good portion of the second half, the way this team battle back and actually made it a game in the end to me is a very good sign. No moral victories here. I believe Schmidt even in the short turnaround time, we’ll have their attention and have them ready to play tonight. Looking at northern Iowa schedule they were competitive with Wichita State, who have beaten a lot of teams this year I believe Jacobson, if that’s his name, the coach of Northern Iowa, in the same way we have them ready to play as well. I understand that Edwards was injured, but when I look at last nights game, it seemed like it would’ve been great to have a 65 guy who is athletic and can really jump to help blunt the Utah state offense, that when they went small gave us some real problems defensively. So hoping that Edwards injury is something that’s not going to keep him out of too many more games. I see Noah, Dwayne, Edward and rose, yes, Rose is being contributors to this team. It may be wishful thinking on my part, but I’m hoping that Xander can become a quick study under the tutelage of Coach Neal, and push Mike for back up minutes behind Noel. I know seeing is believing, and we’ll just have to see. If they can contribute, like I believe they can it will just make us a better team. I think the idea of spelling Noah after he’s been on the floor for a good portion of time, particularly in a fast up-and-down game, is a better preventative than waiting for him to get a fall or two when he’s tired out. It’s also imperative on who’s ever playing in front of them to not just play the Ole defense, with the sense that Noel can clog things up. I know we can’t change our stripes, but I wish in some ways we could get somebody besides Noel to go out there and shock a screen, that too seems like a much too easy way for him to draw fouls. I think this team can be in every game, if we get a total team effort on defense. Playing defense in this case takes a lot of energy and relies upon capable substitutions who nowhere there to be on the court. This type of defense also relies on guys getting used to one another, so I believe in that sense the defense will get better and better. This may be wishful thinking on my part as well, but I’m hoping that as noted in the earlier post if we can get shots for guys like Jones, Johnson and Thompson, and yes, Noah finding his stroke and having those not mentioned limit their threes unless it’s getting later in the clock and they’ve got an open look. Looking forward to tonight‘s game against Northern Iowa. I’ve watched them a little bit, and they are fundamentally sound and really will test the defense with their ball movement and likewise moving off the ball these two games back to back I believe we’ll really pay dividends moving forward and I credit the people putting our schedule together with giving us the opportunity to go into the deep end of the pool, not out of the blocks, but once we had a few games under our belt. Go Bonnies.

One positive take is the Bonnies played hard the full 40 minutes. I was encouraged by the late rally; Our Guys refused to fold the tents.
The best remedy fresh from a loss is to get back on the 🐎 and ride the next night. Let's see what sort of bounceback they have.

Amazing how many times this year our corner jump shots have hit the edge of the backboard…it used to be just stepping out of bounds a few times per game…🇺🇸🇺🇸
