I know, don't really see the upside here. Play one game against a team that won't even count and another game that will prove to be an RPI killer. With that said, I know it was difficult to add games (and games at the RC nonetheless), so kudos to staff on that front. But just thinking that we might have been better off leaving these games off the sked. When these games roll around A-10 play will be around the corner and I want the team to be used to playing tough competition, not schools that may give us artifical positive thoughts. Just my two cents.

oldirtdog: Artificial positive thoughts??? You mean like what Penn State had last Saturday against Iowa?

Perhaps there are no differences between Big 10 teams and Savannah St and its 255 RPI last year. Just thinking whether or not this helps the sked. If it's being done to appease season ticket holders, then I understand more.

Playing Lemoyne is absurd. There are over 300 D1 teams. We couldn't find a better option? A complete joke.

With 301 Division 1 schools I can't believe we have problems with scheduling teams to travel here. It isn't that difficult to travel to Olean. It probably is no different than other school in the northeast. Traveling in and around Buffalo is more difficult than traveling around Olean. Teams can travel by bus or plane to Olean. The thing I can agree on is that if we win and start making noise than teams will come here.
Once again I feel the Bonnies should institute "tiered ticket pricing." Paying full price for a ticket to see a Divsion 3 team is ridiculous. I am willing to pay more for better teams that come into the RC. Does anyone if the Bonnies will make any money with their game against St. John's in Rocheste? My guess St. John's will make more money from this game than the Bonnies.

Friar, I don't think scheduling is easy as you believe it is, especially in this economic environment. If you want a good club to visit the Reilly Center, you have to 1) Pay them a nice fee or 2) go play in at their place the next year. Even No. 2 is difficult. In the last 10-12 years, the Bonnies have had home-and-home deals with Pitt, St. Louis (pre A-10) and Creighton. The Bonnies made their visits. Pitt, SLU and Creighton, on the other hand, decided to pay Bona a fee rather than come play at the RC. That's when the Bonnies had some clout. Those teams didn't want to take a loss away from home.
You think things are any different today? I think the best bet for the Bonnies is to get home and home games with top teams from the MAC and MAAC or with programs like Cleveland State, Siena, Penn, Princeton and Drexel, among others. A deal like Miss State only comes around every so often, if that.
You may be willing to pay more for better teams, but who else is? That miss state game wasn't even sold out. If you're gonna pay big bucks to bring a decent program to the RC, you have to be assured a sell-out.

Adolph - maybe if SBU included Cow Tipping or a Milking contest when opposing teams come to play then they would have an assured sell-outs.
As for the Friar and the Phantom - with the influence, the contacts and the pull they have I,m surprised Big East, Big 10 and the Sunset Conference are not on the schedule?
This current team of Brown Indians need to first learn Schmitty's game plan and get some victories under their belt before they can go up against storng teams out of their conference.

When it comes to scheduling every year the Athletic Department has three needs to fill for basketball, needs of program in terms of competition, desire of fan base, and possibly most importantly depending upon the AD....meeting a projected budget or income.
These two games were added simply for this last reason, they figured if they could not bring in a mid-tier to top tier team then the opponent won't matter in terms how many people pay for tickets (in other words, no difference between having Georgia State (d1 team) or Lemoyne) so they might as well schedule the D2 team that is more of a guarantee win and might bring an opposing fan base albeit small. The only reason they are on the schedule is to meet income levels that the athletic department decided based on its budget it needs to meet each year to achieve goals of the department.

The ability to put together a schedule in these economic times is perhaps the toughest part of the job for an athletic director at a school such as St. Bonas. Points brought up earlier are true. The fact of the matter is the more we win the harder it becomes to get quality teams to come here and play. Conversations with Schmidt and Watson back up the double edge sword effect of us winning. Teams are reluctant to come if they dont think they can get a win. The other big component is the money factor. We cant afford to pay teams to come, plain and simple. Two of the teams we played(and payed) to come last year St. Francis and Princeton will not play us now. Teams that want home and homes want us to go their first. Then you factor in the dates that are available around tournaments, and league schedules in narrows your options considerably. UB only recently started returning calls to us because they are now experiencing the same problems of getting to teams to play. The options of playing bigger schools at venues like Rochester will probably become more of the norm and less of the exception. f

These are cheap bus ride trips against an interesting opponent.
