Time for Quentin and Opeyemi to shine.
Seriously though - I have faith in Iakeem. He's had some good spurts this season. I feel like he's been tentative in fear of making a mistake. Hopefully now he will play with more freedom. One thing Alston has going for him is his speed. Hopefully he can penetrate and make plays. Plus he's a good defender.
Props to the blog for doing some digging and breaking the news. I didn't want to believe it.

I am interested to see what Alston can bring to the table, but this is a big blow to the team. The offense seems to run much better with Adams' steady hand. Considering the minutes the starters have logged this season, I'm surprised there haven't been more injuries/foul-outs. I attribute it to a combination of quality training and talented defenders.
Schmidt has always run a slim rotation, and he's gotten results.

On a 40-minute basis, this is how Iakeem Alston has compared to Jay Adams in all games played this season:
Turnovers-- +2.4 Assists-- +1.2 Rebounds-- +0.8 Steals-- +1.6 Fouls-- +0.4 Points-- -3.6
Iakeem's assist/turnover ratio is 1.42 vs. 2.74 for Jay.
Jay's true shooting percentage is 56.8% (highest on the team) vs. 39.4% for Alston.
At 47.8%, Iakeem doesn't do well at the free throw line, but he is the best on the team at drawing fouls with a .697 FTA/FGA ratio. Look for more drives to the hoop with Alston at point guard.

I am not too worried about Alston running point, but I am worried about how much of a scoring loss they will experience. SBU was already hard pressed to score as is, now you have only two guys who can shoot the ball from the 3.
Going to be tough.

If Iakeem plays with in himself he can be a solid point guard for us for the remainder of the season. He is very good at driving and kicking the ball or throwing a dish to Youssou. When he starts taking it to the rack and throwing up circus shots is when he becomes out of control.

**I do however believe that Alston is an above average defender...probably better defensively than Adams right now...IMO

Drawing fouls may prove to be a valuable asset against Dayton, which has a short bench.

Alston is definitely a better defender than Adams. I am just worried about guard depth and how Alston poses really no three point threat. He seems to be able to draw fouls, hopefully now with some more playing time he will get his FT percentage up. It looks like in JC he shot it at a 63% clip, so it should get a little bit better.

You can put up whatever numbers you want. There is no way in hell Alston compares to Jay. We lose our leader and our player with the highest basketball IQ. We are in trouble!

alston is a defensive specialist. from what ive seen he cannot run point and would not be surpised us trying something different.
this does not take away from what he does do for the team. i love seeing him in there late in games while we are protecting a lead.
no one wants me proven wrong more than myself. Lets go Alston time to step up

Does anyone think Schmidt might now consider doing the unthinkable? Playing Jalen Adams. Bench options are running low. Idris Taqqee isn't doing the trick.

pregame write up by Mest says nothing about the surgery. I wouldn't be surprised. Wrap and go!

Is JALEN ADAMS healthy enough to play?
