Last year 2 players...this year 3 players,,, thats almost half a roster ...in the shadow of an A10 championship, sending a player to the NBA and a conference with 6 bids and a nice A10 tv contract - how do you explain /excuse this...?? These players were in no way recruited over (which explains many other transfers) they simply were not good enough to play A10 - who recruited these guys?? Who wasted their time? Also in the past we have had 'misses' like an Orion Garo.... but that can be excused when you have high level hits like Tim Winn. Caswell Cyrus. Marques Green type hit to offset such misses....
This staff 'targets' Mac level players (watch the video and hear it from him) yet we still miss...
The staff can coach whats in front of them....but their recruiting has always been border line terrible....remember the years they only filled 11 of 13 rides? the late summer scrambles??? we were told this was by design...its really never changed Rolling the dice this spring.... lets hope we get LUCKY,,, heck last year our starting backcourt was acquired this way - imagine our planned backourt this time last year was Iakeem at the point until Jaylen decided to decommitt and fell into our lap

Times change. I can remember when a player was given a scholarship, it meant 4 years at the school. With few exceptions. Mike Rooney was one of the exceptions back in the day. Bona was, evidently, just not a good fit. I would be hard pressed to name another in the 60's. I would be hard pressed to say when the change actually came. But I do remember it. Players started transferring. Generally players who didn't seem to have the talent level that bona required. There were some who were really good though. Now, I think a combination of things are present. I believe the coachs sit down and evaluate players yearly. And then they let them know where they stand. And what may be in their best interests. I also believe that athletes who are not get g playing time want to play. Somewhere. So they transfer. It's a two way street anymore. This is Coach Schmidt's .......Living. This is how he feeds his family. This is how he sends his kids to school......etc. etc.... I can't believe that he would sit anybody that would not help the team. ( unless for violations...etc). He is paid to win games! He will do what he believes is the best (right) way to do it! I see the players play.....in the summer.......practicing.......during the season! I'm not sure some of you posters saw the same thing I saw. The way he ran the team this year......was the way he should have run the team. Speculate all you want. If this, if that, if only....he shoulda.....play this guy....play that one..... I don't blindly put my trust in Coach........I see it all the time.

Really never heard about either player tearing it up in practice daily? If they did it would likely have been posted on this forum. Players leave because they want to play. In the limited time he saw in games I liked Smith more than Adams. To me Adams seemed very timid for someone who some said was an explosive athlete. Good luck to them and move on. We missed on the player that went to Siena.

Was Xavier Smith the guy who came here based on Tyler Relph's recommendation? He also has a younger brother (1 year) who was a very good basketball player, and finished his freshman year at Texas Tech.....and was a starter. Could there have been a thought that if Xavier came to Bona's, so would brother Zack. You know, the Stith brothers, the Smith brothers......I'll cough on that one.

You are an old timer right? Then you should realize that if not for Sam Stith....There would be no Tom Stith.....and if neither of them came....There never would have been a Bob Lanier here..no NIT........and we would probably be div 2 right now. Circumstances occurring long ago lead to your belief that bona s a very special hot bed of basketball activity....that any recruit in the country should want ..... It is special......but they (the coaches) have to work their n*** s off just to get a player to take a look. Its a numbers game anymore. There are 350 universities all wanting the same thing, Quit your complaining. It's 2015......not 1965 PS: I will also say....if Bonnies get some of the players they are after...the Stiths' and Mr Lanier would be proud......and, just maybe, a little jealous...

Note to certain posters - Jim Baron is not coming back. Give it a rest.

How did Joe Lombardi and Rob Lanier continually attract 1st team A10 talent ? Quit drinking the smear koolaid that our school or town or conference are not good enough Those past coaches NEVER had a 6 bid conference to recruit kids into nor an A10 tourney held in the Barclays - yet they got top kids What will it take for you to admit these guys cant recruit worth a _____? ?

While neither are huge blows, it does give us gaps to fill. I was always a little leery on X, seeing how he only avg. like 8 pts a game in high school. Both guys probably frustrated, most likely now want to go back closer to home. Should be a very interesting spring signing period.

Good point on the 8 ppg as a HS senior - so why even recruit a kid like that from that far away??

Baron and his staff: Joe Lombardi - ,oved on to Lasalle & Pitt and then Div 2 national coach of the year Rob Lanier - moved on to top assiatant at Florida and texas and head coach Siena Des Oliver - moved onto asst coach at UNC Charlotte
That staff/people brought top players in here - 2 were alums who knew and respected what our franciscan tradition represented Individuals do make a difference

Hermit- I don't want to speak for JH but he's not an old-timer. He's an early 80's grad. I'm the old-timer who has questioned Schmidt's recruiting ability many times. And yes, I know there are 351 D-1 teams trying to pick from the pool but the A-10 is supposed to be the 6th-8th best conference, so the why settle for MAC type players, or worse? At least work the top end of the pool. I've posted on this before so I won't go into my full rant again, but Schmidt was presented a golden recruiting opportunity (potential ongoing pipeline??) by 3 SBU Basketball HOF members when he first came on board (and a number of times since) and never even picked up the phone to follow up. But he'll take a kid from Texas averaging 8 ppg based on Tyler Relph's say-so?
