Hermit- I don't want to speak for JH but he's not an old-timer. He's an early 80's grad. I'm the old-timer who has questioned Schmidt's recruiting ability many times. And yes, I know there are 351 D-1 teams trying to pick from the pool but the A-10 is supposed to be the 6th-8th best conference, so the why settle for MAC type players, or worse? At least work the top end of the pool. I've posted on this before so I won't go into my full rant again, but Schmidt was presented a golden recruiting opportunity (potential ongoing pipeline??) by 3 SBU Basketball HOF members when he first came on board (and a number of times since) and never even picked up the phone to follow up. But he'll take a kid from Texas averaging 8 ppg based on Tyler Relph's say-so? Az63.... I know you go back! But........yeah.......the butttttt...... I've heard that story sooooo many times......he had this opportunity....he had that opportunity...... He could have this, he could have that..... I'm a believer of......man beng a survivor...... You survive by fulfilling expectations.... You fulfill expectations by achieving..... You achieve by doing the BEST YOU CAN DO...... And nothing less.... I'm not sure where this ......recruit MAAC players has come from honestly... Under the radar sure.... I have asked the question before...... What is the BEST the Bonnies can expect? 1 win NCAA...... Unless.......we get some of the recruits we are after now! If we do.......look out!

JjH and Az criticizing coach Schmidt.who would have thunk it. Let's have a little history lesson. Off the top of my head transfers from the SBU program Bruce Miller, Tim Flanagan, Randy St. John, Lacey Fulmer, Myron Ray Dan Aloi, Alvin Lott, Elmer Anderson, Brion Holland, Mike Wager ,to name a few. It has happened before it will happen again. Look at the list of transfers on verbal commits it is the way of D 1 basketball. It is too bad that it didn't work out for those transfers, but they are free to pursue their dreams elsewhere.
For your glorifying of Lombardi and Ferguson what have they accomished at the D 1 level? Lanier an unsuccessful run as a Siena head coach and then hanging onto the coattails of Rick Barnes? I love Jim Baron, but he hasn't exactly had great success after he left us.
Coach Schmidt has to take chances in recruiting as all coaches do. Does everyone pan out? No . Do some ? you betcha. ( I know in your mind those are the ones Coach Curran signs).
We all would love for it to be 1960 again for Bona hoops, but that isn't happening.
Do you guys hate Schmidt so much that you can give him no credit? I have been a round since the 70's and this isn't a bad era right now.

Wow. Some of you are laughable.
Please remind me of ALL that talent Baron's great recruiters brought in....How'd that work out? Yeah, 56-86 in A10 play under Jimmy boy. Schmidt's staff has a 56-76 record in one less year with those "MAAC" players.
Maybe Adams and Smith may have panned out, but I don't think so. Both looked pretty mediocre out there in their limited time. I know these armchair coaches might think differently, but not one of the players that has left under Schmidt has gone on to do anything.
Same thing happens every year. We have a ton of scholarships to fill in the spring/summer, and guess what, they get filled.
Schmidt could use some of you geniuses on the road.

Actually hermit the MAC thing came from Schmidt in an interview by a Buffalo sports guy - so, it's not something I, or jh, dreamed up. The interview was posted, sorry you missed it. Schmidt is also the one who said, paraphrasing here, we don't need to recruit shooters, we'll teach 'em when they get here, but yet SBU ranked 294th in 3 pt. % & 226th in FG % this past season. So forgive me if I don't think this guy is at the top of the coaching food chain. As to the buttttt stuff, my question is why Schmidt won't, can't, doesn't, pick up the phone, if for no other reason than being respectful to SBU HOFers? Is that so difficult for you to understand? If you believe that "you achieve by doing the BEST YOU CAN DO", does that not include turning over every rock, following every credible recruiting lead especially if that lead has been teed-up for you? By any map you look at NYC is closer than Texas.

By Jaylen Adams (Atlantic Sun), Dion Wright (unrecruited), and Marcus Posley (MAC). And all 3 will be all league players in the Atlantic 10 next year... So who cares who else/who else did not recruit them. It just means everyone else messed up or Schmidt &co do a good job developing players or both

Look at Graham and Weber from VCU t arguably the two best players in the A-10 this year I think they had 1 other offer between them than VCU. All coaches find players that fit their system.
I have reverence for the all time great Bonnies. I grew up hearing about the Stiths and Lanier,, but I sm a 50 year old man and I never saw them play. To think that they would be the key to recruiting now is naive at best. Times and kids have changed.

Alright, jh. So let's just fire Schmidt. Let's fire him. It's clear that he's not a good enough recruiter for you. You say that we can't "excuse" his actions. So let's just go ahead and fire the guy that's 70-55 overall and 33-33 in conference since the 2011-2012 season.
You know what, you mentioned Rob Lanier as a great recruiting success story. Let's hire him! He recruits "first-team A-10 players" in your own words. Let's scoop him up. This will be exciting! You know, except for the fact that he was a head coach at Siena and went 58-70 overall and 34-38 in his conference. What conference did he coach in? Oh yeah, it was the MAAC.
Get real. Seriously, just get real.

Hermit makes a good point here transfers come and go over time. I do not recall one that made a major impact on their new program. Bruce Miller is a good case in point. He transferred to NW Lousiania in 1969 I believe, thereby missing the opportunity to back up the best starting 5 spot in the country (Bob Lanier '70), and play in the final four. Sometimes a little patience goes a long way.

I do not recall one that made a major impact on their new program. Mario Boggan and Mike Gansey to name two. Not to disagree, but it does happen. (And yes I know, Boggan didn't have a choice) Back to the thread topic, how does this impact Adams eligibility? Remember he was ineligible his first year. Does he still have 3 years of playing time, or would sitting out a transfer year limit him to only 2 seasons left? Also need to remember this is the last year of the NCAA "hardship waiver", so maybe he makes a case to return to Michigan and play immediately....

Seriously, just get real. He simply needs to recruit better - he himself (not me) just escorted 5 players out the door in last 2 years - he scouted and he brought in. The impact? Look at the UMass game where Jay Adams fouled out with 2 mins to go but due to poor recruiting we did not have a viable backup PG to handle the ball - we turnover multiple times and lose a key A10 game. Missing on 5 players over 2 years = 13th, 9th & 7th place finishes. Crazy me I wish for our team to do better - and it seems the greatest room for improvement is in the recruitment of players. Where do you think we can improve to get better? He has another opportunity here now with 5 rides - lets see what it brings. Rick Pitino on Zagsblog last week: “College coaching is a lot different than pro coaching,” Pitino said here when I asked his thoughts on the matter. “Pat Riley leaving the booth, going into coaching, Steve Kerr, it’s a little different. College coaching is all about recruiting. It starts with recruiting. So whoever they hire, if he has the potential to be a great recruiter, regardless of how much he knows about basketball — because you’ve got to be on the phone with AAU coaches. You’ve got to get in at 6:30. You’ve got to work until late at night. So you’ve got to understand the dynamics of it.”
