2 alcohol related incidents for an underage student/athlete...probably was warned after 1st one...should've been kicked off...and we shouldn't want him

If students were dismissed or had a sanction as severe as loss of opportunities for involvement in extra-curricular activities and loss of scholarship for a single alcohol incident, you wouldn't get many students to attend that institution.
Now, those sanctions for hitting someone with your car may be worthy of consideration.

We are talking about underage drinking and not a crime like theft. Dan Aloi, Myron Ray and Delonte Taylor (all former Bonnies dismissed for stealing) deserved to be dismissed. Have a difficult time accepting a player should be dismissed over something that majority of college students do. Even though Bonnies need a talented experienced center, without hesitation I would say no to UB's Justin Moss, but say yes to Emmitt Holt.

Drinking and driving is pretty serious. And the incident that got him booted was his second alcohol related offense so he had already given another chance. I'd pass on Emmitt. Hopefully his dismissal is a wake-up call for him to address his problem with alcohol.

Hopefully his dismissal is a wake-up call for him to address his problem with alcohol. As usual members of the Board have made their opinions known (we should get him to address his alcohol problem, we should take him). We have made them without knowing the whole story, without knowing the kid. Consider these: Is he a scapegoat, taking the fall (thank you Cris Carter) for other team members (somebody had to get a penalty to show how tough the coaching staff is). Does he really have a drinking problem when his Blood Alcohol level was .02, or does he really have a problem (team and coaches would know). Maybe he wasn't that good and now the staff can offer someone else.....stats showed he played 29 games, did not start, averaged 3.6 ppg in 11.4 minutes, 3.0 rpg, shot 65% from the floor....not bad. 2 incidents in around 6 months is bad....maybe he was the fall guy because he was around his teammates. Maybe he is just stupid or immature.....very possible. Our coaching staff knows him, they offered him. I would trust their judgement on whether we should take him, not the self described experts that are the posters on this Board. The stats stats.iuhoosiers.com/sports/m-baskbl/2014-2015/teamcume.html

Well......SBU has been touched by another drinking and driving student athlete, Anthony Alvino, and doesn't need to open itself up to even the slightest possibility of anything similar. When an individual suffers a major negative life event because of alcohol (getting kicked out college and losing a full-ride scholarship, job loss, divorce, criminal conviction, etc.)then that individual has an alcohol problem that needs to be addressed. Best case is that Emmitt makes the decision that he simply cannot drink...period...and doesn't. Life changing lesson learned.

Ok, this is getting weird. From an Indiana news source, the blood samples may not belong from the two basketball players. Reported by Bob Kravetz (sp?)

Best case is that Emmitt makes the decision that he simply cannot drink...period...and doesn't. Life changing lesson learned. Opinions are going to be mixed about how similar the incidents are. I personally think they are not similar. Following are comments from Indiana's athletic director "In Emmitt's case, he had a situation ... [where he hit] Devin Davis [with a vehicle last year after] ... he had been drinking. It wouldn't have been a violation if he was 21, but he wasn't and he was cited," Glass told Peegs.com, a website dedicated to covering IU sports. "It probably wasn't his fault he hit Devin, but the fact remains that he ran into his best friend, splatted blood all across the asphalt." It should be noted that Emmitt was cleared of being at fault for hitting Davis. He was cited for operating a vehicle with a low-level blood alcohol content. His blood alcohol content was just .025, below the legal limit for driving. Emmitt is guilty of underage drinking, which occurred in the parking lot where Emmitt attended a party. His second offense did not involve drinking aloohol, but being in a car (with 4 other people) that had 2 unopened bottles of liquor. Interesting to note following from WDRB.com "As has been reported by several people, including Glass, 245 citations were written for underage alcohol during Welcome Week at IU." indiana.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1797516espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/11905649/emmitt-holt-indiana-hoosiers-says-devin-davis-accident-changed-my-life-foreverwww.wdrb.com/story/29931222/bozich-time-for-indiana-basketball-players-to-make-headlines-on-not-off-the-court

The facts surrounding Emmit Holt are these.
• In Nov 2014 he hit teammate Davis while driving with an alcohol blood content of 0.025. He was far from drunk which requires a blood alcohol level of .08 in Indy.
• According to an official report, Davis appeared suddenly in front of the car Holt was driving, and was struck by the car on campus.
• Davis was dismissed in May due to possession of weed.
• During Welcome Home Week Emmit was cited by police for underage possession of alcohol in a convenience store parking lot along with frosh Bryant. Emmit was sitting in the back seat & not the driver.
• During Welcome Home week there were 250 citations issued by police
• Crean dismisses Emmit on the basis of these two incidents within a year of each other.
With the additions of Bryant and Max Bielfeldt, Emmit’s playing time would most likely not have been increased. His value to the team MAY have been diminished this season. Emmit’s inside game finishing, board play & shot blocking skills could help us. From what is known publically there is no way for me to know if he is an alcoholic & doesn’t deserve an opportunity to play elsewhere. If our staff had interest in him they would get good advice from Coach Spadoni at Webster Schroeder HS & Jim Hart at Albany City Rocks pertaining to Emmit’s character. In spite of his errors in judgement I have little doubt that many coaches have been reaching out to him to join their team.
Crean has had a recent problem with player dismissals & no doubt was looking to send a message to all his players. That said, I wonder if Emmits’ reduced value to the team was a factor in the decision to dismiss.
I wish Emmit all the best & hope he has learned from his poor decisions.

From the State of Indiana BMV website........
How much do you have to drink (BAC*) for a OWI/DUI in Indiana?
Under 21 .02%
21 or older .08%
Commercial .04%
**BAC = blood alcohol content

WGT - very nice, accurate summary. I have several friends who kids attend IU. To a person, they state that Holt isn't a bad actor..just a kid doing what kids do. One current IU cheer person felt that Holt didn't quite grasp that, as a hooper at IU, he is under a tremendous microscope.
1) Crean has been taking heat for off the court transgressions and had to make a statement 2) the talent level at IU is on the rise 3) If the feeling is that Bielfeldt will take away some of Holt's PT, then Holt isn't that good as Bielfeldt originally was a walk on at Michigan...big, but very slow afoot. At a top 30 program, Bielfeldt is a 10-15 minute a game type of kid...think a big 10 version of Chris Dees. Bielfeldt is a very good student, from Peoria il, was told he wasn't going to get the time he wanted at UM..The transfer to IU is probably equally weighted hoops/grad school. All of that said, Holt [young holt connection for you old timers] would probably benefit tremendously by transferring to a school like SBU..campus size, proximity to home, potentially big fish in a smaller pond--go get 'em
