Per Chuckie Maggio Twitter "Tareq Coburn is leaving St. Bonaventure, according to a source." 6/27/17 9:03 Blessing in disguise for Schmidt and his staff? Now can go get a transfer IF they move quick. Shame that the coaches used this last year to develop Coburn, but now can go get someone who will contribute to next years team immediately.

So I guess this means Kaputo is sticking around. I had a feeling one or the other was leaving, especially with the Poyser signing. It doesn't mean I'm happy about it though. In his limited minutes, Coburn impressed me; in particular against Hofstra with the Bonnies crumbling and in foul trouble he came in, hit a clutch three and if I recall correctly, stole the ball and took it coast to coast. Would have lost that game without him.
I really thought he had a chance to develop into a starter his junior year but clearly the coaches saw something else. I was also hoping he would be the first of many prospects to pipe in from Cardozo and the NY metro area. Might be hard to convince future athletes from NYC to make the trek to Bona's.

Could be he didnt want to wait until his Jr year to start getting serious playing time. I wouldnt blame him for that.

Bench getting shorter. Need someone with immediate ability and eligibility.

We'll be just fine. This one kid leaving won't affect our recruiting in NYC.

Talent (all A10) and experience in front of you on the depth chart must factor in. I'm sure there are other reasons (many), but I can't fault the kid at this point of his career.

that's a shame if true. Would've liked to have seen him stick around. I thought he could develop into a nice player.

Never got to play; they decide not to stay

I am pretty sure he got to play every day in practice, where the determinations about playing time are made.

This is pure speculation, but if I had to guess, Poyser and Kaputo have played together before and Kaputo is looking forward to that his senior year. This gave Kaputo the urge to stay at Bonas. Coburn saw how good Chef is and Kaputo staying, basically giving him little to no playing time.

I'm sad to see anybody transfer -- based on the fact that I wish every student has the same phenomenal experience that I had at St. Bonas. And I wish the young man boatloads of success wherever he decides to go and later in life. But I'm also curious who the last transfer or transfers from Bonas was/were who made an impact on another Division I program. I'm not saying there aren't any. Mike Gansey comes to mind. The Cornell center whose name escapes me now. We've obviously benefited greatly from some transfers, including Marcus Posley, Matt Mobley, Kevin Houston ... But which transfers have left Bonas and made a mark?

Jeff Foote was the Cornell center. AJ Hawkins I believe had a couple good years at Wichita St. Gansey obviously did very well for himself.
I feel like Transfers are way more common in the past 5 to 10 years though compared to before that.

You could tell Coburn's time at Bona would be shortlived. He looked disinterested and sad on the bench. We all pleaded for him to get minutes, but it was evident Schmidt didn't trust the freshman. I wish him well.
