As long as UB is part of the Big Four they are a rival. You don't have to be a long-time rival, a traditional rival, or a hated rival to fill the definition.
On to the game: even if they weren't a top 20 team, this would be a big game for us. Kenpom has UB by 6, but all oddsmakers are handicapped by the Bonnies' bifurcated track record this year. I'm significantly underweighting the predictive value of the first 6 games when I say I believe the Bonnies have an even money chance of pulling off the big win Saturday. After that we're looking at a tough schedule on the road, so let's hope for some well done bull steak in that home cooking. Go Bonnies!

Regardless what happens, it is such an honor to be on the same court with New York's powerhouse. Hopefully they take it easy on us

As long as UB is part of the Big Four they are a rival. What is the Big Four? When did the schools join the Big Four and how does a school recind their membership?

Like Will Rogers, all I know is what I read in the papers. (That's pretty dangerous nowadays, I know, but it passes for received wisdom).

When you think about it, it's crazy that the "Gonzaga of the East" is willing to come to our "high school gym." A handful of "True Blue" fans sitting among us in the RC? Wow we should be so grateful

Gonzaga of the east only if Oats decides to stay there, it's comparable because of the fact they are in a big city as is Gonzaga(Spokane). I believe they will be a 5 point favorite, but are going to have an extremely difficult time leaving Olean with a win, Stockard might be the most well rounded player the Big 4 has had in some time. The guy can really dominate and take over a game in so many ways, he will be checking Massinburg. It's going to be a battle of the up and coming Bulls against tradition and the fans at the Reilly Center. We should be happy one of our "rivals" is a top 25 team, it gives our team some national recognition as well.

It took Gonzaga years to get respect so UB has a long way to go. They would have 0 NCAA appearances without the auto bid so lets pump the brakes.
That said, a good UB is good for us. With them ranked, if we beat them its on every scoreline on every sports channel and it launches our metrics.

Yeah, I have heard VCU, Rhode Island, Valpo, Belmont, Davidson, Manhattan, UAB, and others call called the next Gonzaga, or even 'The Gonzaga of the East' by their coaches, media, or fans. Every program is going to do it when they have a hot streak. That's what we are told. The fact that Buffalo is in a big city actually hurts their chances of being the next Gonzaga. Part of the key to Gonzaga's success is the lack of competition from professional sports when they were buying TV time to get the local community involved. You listen to Buffalo fans and they all complain that a game was schedule for the same time as the Sabres or the Bills and they say something like "You can't expect people to follow the team if you're going to play at the same time as [insert pro team]."

Gonzaga of the east is such a ridiculous comparison for UB that it's not worth addressing, as all of us not prone to hyperbole know.
Football drives their decisions, as it does almost every FBS school. Until UB leaves the MAC, it's going to be difficult if not impossible to retain a talent like Oates. Joining the AAC would be a good fit, but they'd have to get in line.
Ive heard some UB fans say they should be a Big 10 school, to which I say "lol", because, come on. In fairness, I've said the same thing to people who said Bonas should join the Big East.

When they are in the Big 10 next season, playing Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, etc... I sure hope they remember us!

Sure, they don't have the historical animosity for each other that most rivalries posses but they definitely have a bunch of other reasons that more than make up for it.

LINK: St. Bonaventure and Buffalo budding into rivalry even if some fans disagreeI posted this link on the UB message board as well. I think this could blossom into a decent rivalry. Both schools have been surging in recent years. UB is on fire under Nate Oats, both record wise and recruiting wise. Bona is going through a great period under Mark Schmidt. Why not get excited for this game and let it start meaning something. WNY pride is on the line. I get that Bona has more historical rivalries but this game is more evenly matched than many of those such as Canisius and Niagara.

I love how after a pretty good season last year and a good start to this season Buffalo is already ranked in the Top-20 but after what 4 years of 20 plus wins, a historic snub in 2016, after a pretty big upset at 'Cuse (and Maryland at the time, without Adams) and after going 12-2 to start last season, the best we get is sniffing the Top-25/Top-30. In fact after a huge winning streak last season to end the regular season and only a loss to the eventual A10 Tourny Champs in Davidson (who we best in Triple-Overtime just 2-3 weeks prior), we're one of the Last-4 Teams in the NCAA Tournament. It just doesn't seem right that Buffalo gets national recognition right away by being ranked while also being in lower Conference when our guys have to have our fellow A10 programs Coaches stick up for us when we only get recognized when we're getting shafted! Sorry it's just been bugging me for awhile now

It's almost like the Arizona upset last year is carrying over into this season... a lot of recognition to start out the year for the Bulls.
