"Bonnies" - always has been and always will be the name that is remembered by fans and media, no matter what formal nickname is adopted. trying to drop or avoid the "Bonnies" moniker would be a huge mistake - the Athletic Dept. and University need to recognize the value of this trademark. Prior Administrations have not understood this, but I hope that Steve Watson will do the right thing and protect this nickname.

Is the name wolves the only other nickname being considered by the University? What about Oilers? It was a Franciscan who was the first European to see oil in North America. May have been Father DeLaRoche. I see many more job openings for the oil industry being advertised in the Olean Times Herald. With the high cost of oil, maybe the time is ripe to resurrect the oil industry in Olean.

For whatever reason, this offseason banter about a nickname change has taken over the board. It's never going to happen, nor should it. Our nickname means a lot to many, many people and changing it to some generic, run of the mill "Wolves," "Wildcats," "Bears," "Bobcats," "Cougars," "Eagles," or "Bulldogs" would be an outrageously dumb move.

As I see it, Bonas has two problems; a practice gym for games and a girls mascot name. Yes, "Bonnies" is a good abrev. for St. Bonaventure. I don't believe Don McClean ever thought that bonnies was going to be the mascot name though. What other men's sports team in the country uses a girls name for a mens mascot name. Why don't they wear jerseys with bonnies across the chest? I know the basesball team did but I bet that if given the choice, none of the men players would want to wear a girls shirt for games. It is embarrassing to me. ANY other name would be better (ie wolves, warriors, oilers, big cats or barrons).

Nothing against the former voice, but who gives as shit what Don McClean thought?
The new logo was not a cheap endeavor. They are not going to throw the investment down the drain and come up with something new. Bonnies is going nowhere. Brown Indians are never coming back.
Facilities. Coaches salaries. Facilities. Budgeting. Scholarships. Marketing. All things that need to be done before a name change is entertained.
Big Cats...killing me. Sounds like the nickname for an elementary school floor hockey team.

I would never be ashamed to wear Bonnies on a Jersey. I take pride in my school and would take pride in wearing that jersey.

Uh, get rid of the Bonnies? Seriously? What are you guys, terrorists? Anyone suggesting this should receive a lifetime ban from the board for the sheer vulgarity they are spewing. Traitors.

As long as St. Bonaventure has had a team, even when the official nickname was the Brown Indians, they have been referred to as the Bonnies. It is unique. No need for another name. What would we gain? And, people would still call them the Bonnies anyway.

I am not against referring to Bonas as "the bonnies" as an abrev. during conversation. It was never meant to become the mascot name, only as an abreviation. Now you want it to remain as a mascot name! It cost 50K to do originally in the 80s. Everyone was in shock when it changed to this. The problem is that no other team in America has a mascot name for a men's team that is denoted using a girl's name. I know that potential recruits would not want to be referred to as girls. IMO, Bonnie stands for a girl's name even if you put an 's' on it. If you don't see that then your blind or in self denial. The official nickname should be another name, anything would be better that is more masculine in connotation. Those that want to band me for my thoughts are already feeling tension because it hits a nerve. Shalom.

So, you think Bonnie stands for a girl's name...so what? Does St. Bonaventure no longer have women's teams? Why does everything have to be masculine...especially when there is no way that Bonnie is referring to females. Should we call ourselves the Brown Indians and force the womens teams to be called the Brown Squaws....that would be racist at best...How about the Raiders? Would the cheerleaders or the womens teams be called Raiderettes? The Bonnies is not a bad nickname...the only one in the country and nobody is complaining that it is racist, sexist or any other kind of "ist" out there...

Ive heard alot of people mock our school and not once did they say anything about them having a "girly" name. We dont seem to be losing recruits because our nickname is the Bonnies. I tell people that I am a Bonnie all the time and nobody has accused me of being a girl. Im proud to be one and always will be. You arent hitting a nerve here you just dont make a good argument.

Never heard the "girl's name" argument either. I usually got the "what the hell is a bonnie?"
I was down in Jacksonville a month or so ago. I was wearing a Bonaventure shirt out at a bar when some guy shouts, "St. Bonnies!!!!" Not an alum, just someone who grew up in Fairport who identified the school as the bonnies.
