What exciting news about the RC basketball court being named after Bob Lanier. I just returned home from vacation. While catching up with the Bandwagon I couldn't believe this thread. It looks like Steve Watson is starting to make his presence known. Good for him.
Something for Lanier should have been done years ago. This is long overdue. If I am not mistaken the last time Lanier came back to Bonas was during the 75th basketball anniversary or was it when Bob came to town to tout his book. Not to overshadow the announcement of the renaming of the basketball court I had heard that Lanier hasn't always been so favorable about his alma mater. By the looks of it, it seems like Bona and Lanier have a good relationship. This definitely positive.
The second point I would like to make is a new mascot name - The "Bonas Wolves." This way we are incorporating old with new and something more tangible. Or should I say more identifiable - a logo we can all embrace.

Please no nickname change. Where is all of this coming from?

I agree with SirElton, I like the nickname the Bonnies. It is unique. Bona Wolves would be stupid. Imagine if Texas A&M changed their name from the Aggies to the Texas A&M wolves. That would be stupid. I didn't think we should've changed from The Brown Indians but Bonnies is the best alternative unless we changed it to the St. Bonaventure Brown Native Americans because that would just be funny.

Nickname changes come from the same place as the football discussion. Something that is always there and rears its head from time to time.

A brand new thread dedicated to a "new nickname". Let's see, there is the "New Nickname" thread this could have been posted under, or the "Bob Lanier Court" thread that has turned into a nickname debate, and addresses the first part of your statement.
Do people want to have a generic nickname like 90% of the schools in the country? How about we change it to Wildcats? Now we can fit in. Maybe even Bulldogs, not enough teams have that nickname.
What's wrong with having a unique nickname. St. Bonaventure Bonnies has a great flow to it, even if people don't know what a "Bonnie" is. Do nicknames really even matter that much? Do you think a Wake Forest fan wakes up and says, "Oh, we are playing the Tar Heels tonight."
We are the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, end of discussion.

BONNIES what a great name.
Look at the definition why would you not want to be a Bonnie (also Bonny)
bon·ny also bon·nie(bn) adj. bon·ni·er, bon·ni·est Scots 1. Physically attractive or appealing; pretty. 2. Excellent.

:PI read on the Forham board that they found it funny that the press release said that Bob Lanier "embroidered" his career at St. Bonaventure. That apparently welding isn't the only arts course offered at SBU. I have to hand it to our rivals to come up with some quips in the downtime of mid-summer.

They are just jealous of the whole thing since they are still playing in Rose Hill.

They are just jealous of the whole thing since they are still playing in Rose Hill. And because of how crappy they've been for so long.

They are just jealous of the whole thing since they are still playing in Rose Hill. Seriously. They've never had anyone good enough to name their court after. Maybe they could name it "The Smush Parker Court at Rose Hill Gymnasium"

I have always favored the "Brown Indians" as the Bona mascot name. It is based on tradition and the relationship Bonas had with the Seneca Nation. In this day and age of political corrrectness "Brown Indians" is gone forever. It is time to move on.
However, with all due respect to the other posters, I am not in favor of the Bonnies. SBU needs to have that mascot that people want - it is called marketing that will generate more exposure for the university. Unfortunately we live in a day and age where people identify themselves with certain things.
Recently on this board two new names have been mentioned as mascot names - Big Cats and Bonas Wolves. My vote goes to the Bonas Wolves. Big Cats doesn't cut it for me. The name thing probably won't change but it does make for interesting conversation.

First off let me preface this by saying the only name I would be open to is the "Brown Indians" however that is impossible.
Now,
If we are talking about marketing why would you want to be the wolves? There are several colleges already that are the Wolves. Just like if I were to say Rams, or Tigers who comes to mind?? Probably a bunch.
Right now we are alone, when you say Bonnies people know who you are talking about, why would you want to change that?
If we are just going for marketing (which I would think means getting people to talk about you) why not try something crazy like. The Rocky Balboa's or maybe The Harry Potter's.
Obviously you can all see my stance. I like being a Bonnie.

As long as Indian casinos are making big money that they can pour into lobbying efforts Brown Indians will be off limits, and I can't see Wolves either. Don't forget, the women's teams have to share the name - Lady Wolves doesn't have a good ring, and you'll get Brown Indians back before you'd get the St. Bonaventure Foxes!!!! ;D
