As a resident of Florida, it seems that several memories come up when St. Bonaventure is mentioned:
1- "Bob Lanier" 2- "The Bonnies" 3- "The Brown Indians"
As previous posters have stated, the Brown Indians as a mascot will probably not happen. A memory of the "Brown Indian logo"(B with Headdress)could be placed somewhere within the Reilly Center Floor or wall. Lastly, St. Bonaventure University is known as the "Bonnies" throughout the country. The mascot doesn't matter but the "BONNIES" name and affiliation does. Keep the tradition and remember SBU Brown Indian as retired and respected with its logo and refer to SBU as the "BONNIES".
So far we seem to be half way there with a respectable coach, dedication of a player that put SBU on the map, put the memory of the traditional B with headdress on the wall, and the Bonnies logo on the Floor.

Why not name the team St. Bonaventure "Bob-Cats" a take off of Bob Lanier & the big cat.

At some point in all of this I'm kind of wondering what the current students/recent grads are thinking? I feel that tradition is wonderful and SBU basketball has a strong and good tradition. By the same token I try to put myself in the place of the 22 year old class of 2007 grad and ask myself just what does it all mean? Traditions have to be maintained to be truly meaningful. That translates into winning teams. The scandal and Solomon's disastarous reign have left a massive 5 year hole in the SBU basketball tradition that hopefully AD Watson and Coach Schmidt can fix. Like I've posted before, we need present day heros in addition to those in the past. One NCAA tournament berth in the past 20 years seems dismal in contrast to our accomplishments of 20 years before that. Or, is it simply a realistic reflection of the fact that time does indeed march on and the heydey of a small, underfunded program like SBU making major Div 1 waves has long since passed?
I'm left wondering (speculating) that if SBU basketball had in some way maintained its history maybe instead of only one Lanier there might've been three, one graduating say in 1986 and one say in 2003. Instead of one NCAA tournament berth in the last 20 years there perhaps might have been six. Etc. etc.. I'm wondering if SBU basketball tradition had in fact been maintained would Lanier be the sole mega-star or one of several? Would there in fact be a Lanier court?
Stuff to ponder on a slow, hot August day.

I am a 22 year old class of 2007 grad and the tradition was not at the level I would have liked it to be. It goes without saying that Tony S did nothing to help matters by calling us out for not representing the student body at the Ohio U game. Funny thing is I watched all the games, except I was in the last row of the RC.
That does not mean that we don't care for the tradition at St. Bonaventure. It measn a great deal to me and my fellow classmates. In fact a group of about 20 grads, including myself, tattooed the B with the head dress on our bodies.
I will say this, the Bona wolf is pretty laim and I think we need a new design but not a new mascot as a whole.

I have suggested "Fighting Francisicans" or "Fighting Friars" many times. To make a long story short, the response has not been very positive. Apparently fighing and Francisicans does not mix together. Good thought though.

gross and grosser Why couldnt we keep the nickname bonnies, but go back to the B with the Head dress for our symbol. We dont need an official indian mascot.

I find the use of animals as mascots really degrades all animals of all species... :-)

Top Ten Nickname Choices (in alphabetical order):
1. Bald Eagles 2. Blizzard 3. Bobcats 4. Brown 5. Brown Bears 6. Browns 7. Franciscans 8. Senecas 9. Soldiers 10. Wolves
I'm most partial to the St. Bonaventure Brown, the St. Bonaventure Franciscans and the St. Bonaventure Senecas (my favorite but probably impractical). Bonnies will forever be the informal nickname, of course, and appropriately so.

As has been noted in this discussion before, Providence has the nickname "Friars" for their program. I'd not be in favor of using "Friars" when we are geographically and otherwise so close to them.
