I am not sure why this thread is so long. We will never be the Brown Indians again. But even when we were, people across the country, and the media across the country, referred to us as the Bonnies. Nobody else is the Bonnies. I have a video about the first 25 years of the NY Mets. In that video, there is a clip from I think the NY Daily News from around 1961. Granted, this is aged. However, the point is relevant today. The clip had to do with the origins of the Mets, I think related to the great Casey Stengel taking over as manager. In any event, in addition to the headline about Stengel taking over as manager, the other headline on the back page of the paper was "BONNIES WIN". It wasn't "Brown Indians win", or any other nickname. It was "Bonnies Win" as the headline of the paper. And, everyone then, and everyone now, would know what that means.
We are, and always will be, The Bonnies. And, I am proud of it.

100% agreed. If you don't want to be a Bonnie give your diploma back then.

Bona 84 et al.- I agree that we’ll always be the Bonnies, and as I said appropriately so, but that does not mean that it has to be the official or only nickname for the school’s athletic teams. As your post shows, we had an official nickname for decades in addition to the Bonnies moniker. A new/additional nickname could surely be a positive thing if the new nickname is meaningful and true to the traditions of the university and community.

Elgin, we'd still be the Bonnies.

Sorry, but I'm not sure I get your point. If you saying that because we'd still be the Bonnies any new or additional nickname would be irrelevant, I disagree. Certainly, the Brown Indians nickname and associated traditions were not irrelevant as evidenced by the many posters on the board who have advocated their return and/or bemoaned their loss.

The New York Mets played their first season in 1962.

Yes, Bob, they did. Are you implying that the NY Daily News waited until April of 1962 to mention anything about the Metropolitans in their publication?

Bob - Yes, 1962 was the humble first season of the Mets. The Daily News headline announced the hiring of Casey Stengel, which occurred sometime before they played their first game. I could go back and review the video for an exact date, but that is not the point. "BONNIES WIN" was the large headline at the top of the back page. That was the point. Elgin - my point is that we will always be the Bonnies. The Brown Indians nickname did have relevance. I don't think, however, that assigning another nickname today is necessary, or will have relevance. The nickname Bonnies, has relevance.

Because of the "political correctness" of the brown indian name we all have to come to grips with the fact it will never happen again. We must also realize that we must preserve the ancient native American Practices such as but not limited to: Cigarette shop owners, Casino Owners, Toll Booth Owners, etc... (tax free of course) because of the soverign nation thing - "when it's convenient, of course." Start at the tear drop and slowly pan away showing a native American on a horse with a large tire fire behind him blocking Rt. 86.............

Sorry fellows, that's my bad. As an expansion team, and Casey being canned after the 1960 series loss to the Pirates, the Mets certainly had coverage in 1961. I was not trying to be smart. Instead, I was displaying my old timer's disease.
