Will have to sit out a year, but this could be a major pick-up.

This is from scout.com:
Absolute warrior. He's undersized ** but don't tell him that. He's a beast. He plays so hard that he'll remind you of a mini-Ousmane Cisse. Gets everything on effort. Osby averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds last year at Richmond (VA) Benedictine Catholic High School in Richmond, Va. His nickname is Boom. He led team to the first VISBA Division 1 Championship in school history last year with a 24-5 record. Benedictine won the Virginia State Catholic League championship in 2002-03. Osby has played for the high profile Richmond Squires AAU team since he was 12.
** - He was listed at 6'5", 220 coming out of high school in 2004 -- has grown already to 6'7", 245 !

And this is from Rivals.com (dated though)
November 13, 2003 Osby Speaks On Decision -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VirginiaPreps VirginiaPreps.com
November 12 marks the first day collegiate seniors are able to sign their letters of intent to each of their prospective colleges. For Bambale Osby, the day marked his official announcement and collegiate signing at the same time. Seated with his mother by his side, Osby began today’s press conference by thanking the guests, media, classmates, coaches, and friends for their attendance at Benedictine Memorial Gymnasium.
Sporting a brand new New Mexico Lobos hat, Osby addressed the television media of why he chose a school 3,000 miles from home. Osby praised the diligence of the New Mexico staff in his recruitment and their strong desire to make him a focal point of their 2004 recruiting class. For Osby, the recruitment from New Mexico began July 20 of this year following a successful trip to Las Vegas with the Richmond Squires AAU organization for the Adidas Big Time. The Adidas Big Time is am invitation only AAU basketball event produced by Double Pump, Inc. The event is considered by many to be the premiere AAU tournament in all the land. It is here that Osby proved he could go head to head with the best players in the United States.
New Mexico Head Coach Ritchie McKay told Virginiapreps.com that Osby’s physical presence was the first thing that caught his eye in a battle against Dwight Howard and the Atlanta Celtics. “It was very evident that after watching Bambale play in Vegas that we were impressed with his strong physical presence. However, it was 2 to 3 hours into his official visit that we knew he was our type of person. Bambale represents a player with great character, and as a college coach we always welcome good character to any team.” McKay stated that he was happy to sign a player from a nationally respected AAU program like the Richmond Squires.
“I am just thankful the entire process is over. No more late night phone calls requesting visits is the best part”, joked Osby. “I truly want to thank my coaches. Especially the Squires program. For if it had not been for our trip to Vegas, I wonder if this match would ever have been made.”
Osby stated that another reason for the early decision is to focus on the task of defending Benedictine’s state championship. Benedictine faces one of the most difficult schedules in recent memory, and Osby agrees that being able to focus on leading his team to continued success is the new task at hand.
Osby averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds as a junior at Benedictine.

A big "huh?" goes out to all of this. Does the player have any interest in SBU? Why are we supposed to be excited over this? There are dozens and dozens of other schools he should be considering first. It's easy for everybody to pick out the big names in the crowd but we always end up landing players that nobody is talking about (Such as Tyler Benson). If there is documented evidence from ANY source that states Osby is interested in SBU, please share it. Until then, lets keep our pants on.

He just visited and I'm told he verballed to us. Was seen playing hoops in the gym on Monday.
How about a little optimism, huh ? This staff are amazing recruiters, and they could sign anyone in the country given their talents.
Just sit down and talk to them sometime, especially Jayson or Jake, they are two wonderful individuals that are always upbeat and outgoing. They, along with Anthony and the rest of the staff are turning this thing around a lot faster than anyone anticipated, and are bringing in talented individuals that want to be here and help re-establish St. Bonaventure as a basketball power.
They're not 'settling' for marginal players athletically and/or academically. They are not shy about going after anyone, anywhere.

The good news: he is a transfer from a high profile program. He is listed by Scout as a 3 star recruit and just looking at his picture he is a muscular athlete. Personally I can't think of a former Bonnie player with a more impressive physique. Here is a link to his profile and picture from Scout Hoops: scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=721246The bad news: at New Mexico he only averaged 7.4 minutes of PT and 1.6 points a game. He will have to sit out a year, because he is a transfer. Here is a link to his stats at New Mexico: golobos.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/2004-2005/teamcume.htmlFox thank you for the scoop. Osby would be a solid signing and he has time to develop his game. He certainly has the big and physical body the Bonnies are always looking for.

good insight on the good/bad....
appears that New Mexico had a short rotation of 6-players averaging 25-30 minutes a game...didn't leave many minutes for the other players...
but it was a winning team that made the tourney, so he had alot of tough practices against good competition....
like the fact that our new players are coming from winning envirnoments; whether they are transfers or are from JUCO or HS!
he would be a solid pickup to say the least....

So, I'm guessing he would have 3 years of eligibility after sitting out this next year?

And what of the rumors of a scholarship opening up? That would have to be announced first, wouldn't it?

Osby ranked 393 in HoopScoop's 2004 Final Rankings.
P.S. Copenhagen -- Perhaps you missed it, but James is not coming.

When did James not coming get discussed/known? That is disappointing news. James notwithstanding, I echo Fox' comments about the staff's recruiting success. I am actually excited about next season and I didn't think that was going to be the case.
