Wasn't it the university of Jacksonville not Jax State? Cassian you are correct. Foolish mistake on my part. According to last year's RPIs, Jacksonville's RPI is 305. Jaylen originally signed with one of the worse teams in the nation. warrennolan.com/basketball/2017/schedule/Jacksonville

Correction Mr. Gleason...i would expect more accuracy from a st johns grad. the classic walsh vs st francis battles featured dewey taylor, the late matt o'connell, mark maguire, tim mcbride and jeff grandusky for walsh vs a loaded frannies squad with mr. patton, jerome davis, roth, and andzel. bruno and crew squared off with the uber talented bruce sage and chris jerebko [ syracuse ]. Patton would have eaten bruno's lunch and dinner. Dewey, who was 6'1" on a good day was a leaper ala matt gantt...in fact when walsh went against st francis at the walsh gym...frannies won the tap..passed to patton who thought he had an easy deuce..only to see dewey sky and swat it into the crowd..that set the tone for the whole game. when walsh visited frannies..digger phelps, frank maguire and al maguire were in the stands scouting patton. during the '72/'74 seasons the catholic league was loaded with talent...patton at st fran, billy truitt and ricky williams were at timon...truitt ended up at south carolina and truitt went to long beach st when they were a powerhouse..aaron curry ended up at oklahoma and there were a few others...walsh more than held their own against the big boys! Frannies coach was the colorful bob torgalski..his two sons were the ball boys...i believe they ended up playing at nichols prep with laettner [ who was from the southtowns area and actually played his frosh year at st francis!]. one of the torgalskis was the baseball coach at UB this past season when UB dropped their program. The greatest sporting event I was ever at was the school I grew up with and eventually went to - Baker - vs. Frannies when Patton was a senior. Frannies was #1 in the state. My father coached Baker in the 50s and 60s and was now doing all their publicity and was the PA announcer (and still taught there). So, I got to sit on the stage for games. And, behind me was Lefty Driesell and his assistant. To the left of me was Digger Phelps, Satalin, Bobby Cremins, and 7-8 other D1 coaches. Bill Truitt scored 46 points, which were almost all three pointers in today's game. Lefty said to his assistant - this kid could be 3rd guard right now for any school in the country. The game seemed won and lost several times by both teams. It was either double or triple OT (one of them being because my future freshman coach first traveled on an in bounds that was NOT after a basket, had Frannies score to "win" the game with a second or so left - only to have him then throw in a shot from across midcourt. Eventually Torgalski was forced to put freshman Bruce Sage on Truitt and that did not work too well for Frannies, and Baker won the game.

I confused Chris Patton with Vory Billups. Patton was from St Francis. Vory was the player who never suited up. So you are right on both accounts. They both had Marfan's Syndrome. Fortunately, Vory found out in time, unlike Chris.

Tim - those St Francis guys Patton and Jerome Davis used to play pickup next door (one of my older bro & neighbor were St Frannie seniors)- 6'ft 9 guys looked about 8ft tall at my age in 6th grade.
St Francis always had trouble with Baker - who else was on that Baker team?
That frosh Bruce Sage was just a year removed from playing my grammar school and he was playing in that competition - he went on to be All WNY in both basketball and baseball.
That era the Catholic leagues were loaded with major D1 talent - you would think Bonas would have tapped it bigtime since was on the heels of Bonas 1968 undefeated team and 1970 Final 4
Coach Torgalski really had a system for his powerhouse. St Francis had dormitories for about 40 kids - he put out the word to other Franciscan high school in the East if they had a top kid they could send them up to the Franciscan school in Athol Springs - all that imported talent was added to the already top talent playing at Baker & Timon and Neumann etccc. Patton & Davis were out of Selma Alabama and a PG Caesar Garcia was also a talented import.
Coach T also used the dorms to hold hoop camps for 6th-8th graders - had the tall varsity kids helps - all the time able to identify top local talent and offer them a ride to add to the imports. Jerebko came that way and him & Sage were 2 of the 5 ALL WNY guys when again they got a preseason #1 ranking 3 years after Patton.

bbb and jh - in feb of 1973...there was a three way tie at the top of the smith league..frannie, baker and walsh...on the same evening walsh squared off with baker and frannie played st marys [ D]. Baker was to knock off Walsh and Frannie was to destroy St Marys. Walsh ended up knocking off Baker and St Marys upset Frannies.
Baker's guys were Cadle [ penn st ] Meyers, Moses, Phillips, Diaz and McCalla...Cadle was a smooth scorer..moses and mccalla were the big and philips and meyers were tough guys who did what ever was necessary to win. A great squad. I think the following year Baker had Williams and Truitt on their roster..At one point they had big Steve McDowell who ended up at Tulsa [ i think ] and Ed Phillips who was tough on the boards...on the football and baseball side of things, the Milligan boys were top notch for Baker. And dont forget, a bit earlier, Baker had Dave Rajski from Olean who was a great athlete!

The 2nd biggest star after Truitt was the center who had transferred from Lackawanna. I think his name was King. I must be really getting old because I'm pretty sure 5 years ago I'd know his exact name - and the other starters. Dave Quinn, who made that desperation heave, was the point guard. Truitt was an unreal shooter and overall talent. He really could have done great things if he had his head screwed on better...............Everybody knew Sage would be a great player, but just was overmatched that day. I went to the Coach T camp. Had a good time, learned a lot, and we won the championship in a huge comeback. As you probably know, Jerebko's son plays for the Celtics now.

Baker always seemed to have one superstar - from Jim Tucker, then Al Richardson, then Kevin Cadle, then Truitt, then McDowell (he did go to Tulsa). Cadle is like the top coach in England these days. He's coached the national team several times (Kevin, not Eric) His college ball was played at Penn State..............Diaz unfortunately died a long time ago - heart attack I think. I remember St. Mary's of the Deaf beating Baker in a huge upset one of those years, also. Those Walsh teams also always had a superstar - John Karuch, Grandusky, Bruno, etc. And, I think Rajski actually played for both Walsh and Baker, right? Those Milligans were definitely great football and baseball players, as you note. The best was Hightower and Milligan in Baker's backfield. They even made SI's Faces in the Crowd. (With the Thrilla in Manilla on the cover)

Satalin once told me that Rosey was in the bag until the SU visit. I saw him dominate Section V Class C playoffs at the War Memorial. His cousin was Nate Bouie and those Kendall teams were a machine in the mid 70s. Ask CoachSBU who went to Kendall with them. What could have been ... indeed a program changer for both sides ...

My brother used to teach at Barker Central, which was in the same Orleans league as Kendall. Their tallest guy was 6-2. Nate was 6-7, and then there was Rosie. Kendall played volleyball on the backboards in most of their high school games - it seemed like they got every rebound.
