To me the whole thing about playing time is conjecture. This is something for our coaching staff to address. I'm not trying and bait and switch tactics, but for a young man as talented as Mellouk is, it might be hard to keep him off the floor. Our staff has always let these questions be played out in practice. Coaches comments to Linton Brown, that he's expected to come in and fight for minutes and shoot for A10 newcomer of the year, isn't what I've heard us say to an incoming recruit before. Before playing time is all signed sealed and delivered, we got guys working out and playing all summer, or so we hope. So many of our incoming guys have been "under wraps". with co vid restrictions on practice and games. Case in point, Justin NT trying to let his light shine up in Canada. I look at our front court, right now that's three guys. I'd like to know how many competitive college basketball squads are thinking they will get through the season with three legitimate front court players. There are so many variables, we were so fortunate that in our 21 oe 22 game season we were able to get by with only Shoon and Jalen Shaw. For a good potion of the season we were skating on pretty thin ice with our front court depth or lack of it. If somebody sustains an injury in December or January a lot of hopes and dreams might be just that hopes and dreams. I can't read players minds, I can only see a really talented kid that makes us a better team. I truly believe that with Anouar's shooting alone, he is one match up night mare. I would like to see Anouar make his decision soon, but I refuse to let a talent like that slip away without making a case for him.

To put it mildly. UMaine is one the very worst programs in college basketball and has been for some time. Ranked #346 in kenpom last season, #320 in 2020 and #338 in 2019. On the other hand, if he really likes cold weather, it's hard to beat Orono. Just an observation but the fact that he did not jump at our offer, is sitting on offers from six inferior programs and is tweeting out an offer received from a dreadful Maine program tells me all you need to know. He wants playing time next year and I can't fault him for that. But it's unlikely he's getting minutes here. I would be surprised if he signs with us but I may be wrong. My sentiment exactly. I was going initially with the impression that his friendship with his fellow countryman was important, the history with PVP and Charlon, the chance to play on a Top rated team, a place to develop his skills, the chance to be in the NCAA tournament and play in the A10 conference were key to his decision, but he is taking too long, and maybe playing time is the key. I hope he becomes a Bonnie, but as time passes, I am becoming very skeptical.

As we await Coach Schmidt's & Anouar's decision on him becoming a Bonnie keep the following in mind.
The time period that has elapsed from our offer to date may be caused by his indecision OR a transcript issue, OR we offered but have decided to pass on him.
One thing is sure. Our staff continues to diligently explore the large # of available players. The answer to ANOUAR coming or not should come soon.
Due to the wealth of available talent this just MIGHT be the year we fill all our available ships. More likely than any other recruiting season but history will probably repeat.
There are 3 more months before we know the answers. In the meantime we are sure looking good as we leverage our recognition as A10 Champs (season & Tourney) as well as being highly ranked to attract the best talent with character we can.

New tweet from Chuckie Maggio:
"Just got off Zoom with Joryam Saizonou. Asked him about the likelihood of Anouar Mellouk teaming up with him at Bona. “I think there’s a chance,” he said, “but it’s really up to him.”
Has he been pitching his buddy on SBU? “Of course.”

I understand the frustration with waiting for Anouar to make a decision. — So far this spring, Bonnies made an offer and it seemed within a few days the other recruits signed with Bona. — Actually it has been just 11 days since Bona made an offer to Anouar on May 3rd. — It seems longer, because there was speculation made on the Bandwagon after Joryam signed with Bona. Waiting for Anouar’s decision reminds me of the suspense with recruiting Osun. — Osun decommits from La Salle on April 30. — Next day Bona and Syracuse make an offer to Osun on May 1st. — A week later Osun visits Bona on May 8th. — Almost 3 weeks later (20 days) from day Bonnies make an offer, Osun commits to Bona on May 21. If we use the same 20 days it took Osun to make his decision, Anouar would be making his decision on May 23rd, which is still 9 days away. I remember the posts of Osun will not be signing with Bonnies as he is visiting Syracuse and Georgetown. Or every day that passes reduces Bonnies chances of signing Osun. Some players take a little more time and there are many reasons I can think of (parents insistence of taking his time, enjoying the recruiting process or having an important day set like Linton). Bottom line Bonnies have a clear edge with his friend Joryam being from the same hometown. Like Osun with his friend Kyle convincing him Bona is the place for him. Now we have Joryam, who I’m sure is doing the same thing with Anouar. We just need to be patient and hope Joryam is as good of a salesman as Kyle. 247sports.com/Player/Osun-Osunniyi-46055565/TimelineEvents/

WGT bringing up transcripts reminds me of another foreign player, who had transcript issues. It went from looking doubtful, to hopeful, to doubtful again. It reached the point where Schmidt invited PG Ta'Vaughn White for a visit. White commits, but all of a sudden Kloof's transcript moved back to hopeful. White was put on hold, who decided not to wait and went JUCO. Schmidt decided to gamble for Kloof. Gamble paid off, but it still took another month before Kloof's transcripts finally cleared in June.

I'm appreciative of wet, chuck and other recent posters. I get caught up in the rush of being able to attract a talent like Dalen Ridgnal or Anouar Mellouk, and rational thought goes out the window. I saw Joryam's comments from Chuckie Maggio and I was encouraged, but I also really liked the statement by Joryam, that in the end it's really his decision. After I read wgt''s post, I took a deep breath and just said to myself "give it some space".
I aslo started thinking about Shoon, Dom and Kyle, what they've been through over these past three years. Learning to be a winner on this level, doesn't come easy. We sometimes forget a big part of a player's development is going to come from he guys he surrounds himself with. Coach Schmidt, the staff and, I would say just as importantly this core group of guys, have dealt with some disappointments, not hitting a shot in the closing minutes against St Louis, that meant no NCAA bid, being dominated by VC:U, Dayton and Davidson as sophomores and then ending last season because of the pandemic and finally a season that ping ponged back and forth between a shutdown, cancelations and re-scheduling. So for Anouar, as a budding front court player, learning every day in practice from a guy like Shoon, you're just not going to find that kind of tutor-ledge. Shoon is one of, if not the best shot blocker/defender in college hoops, you want to take your game to another level come play against a budding NBA player. Winning just doesn't happen it's about learning how to win from winners.
In closing, just as wet reminds us, Coach Schmidt, Coach Curran, Coach Neal and Coach Woodall have assembled what we think is one mostalent recruiting class in school history. We'd love to add Anouar to that group, but they are comited to getting the best players that they believe "have what it takes". I am so thankful for their efforts.
Looking forward to Chuckie Maggio's piece on Joryam.

All very good logical posts and the conclusion will play itself out soon. There is one element missing though. Good to great players hate to lose and loosing becomes old very quickly. Maine is not the answer. If he wants to compete then Bonnies is the right choice. If he just wants PT then good luck.

I feel good about the response.... 50% chance right up to 75% 👏🏀🇳🇱

A possible reason for the delay is that in person recruiting begins again on June 1. This was announced April 16, before Mellouk started getting his more recent offers. You can't blame a guy for wanting to actually see where he may be going.

To me, it was a given that Anouar wants to win.
My point was that the combination of great coaching, which equates to part of the player development equation, combined with the opportunity to play against great competition everyday in practice is how you grow as a player. Going against Shoon and co., and likewise the talented group of newcomers, of which Anouar would be a part of, would really enable him ot up his game. Jalen Shaw last year talked about how fortunate he was to not only play against Shoon every day, but he also got to work with Shoon, to learn some of the subtleties of front court play. The question is pretty straight forward, which of Anouar's opportunities gives him the greatest chance to develop as a player. Working with a great coaching staff, who have proven their ability to develop players, and competing in practice everyday with guys who have earned the right to be called a top 25 team. At Bonaventure every week players earn their minutes. I look at Youssou Ndoye, a big man from Sengeal, with low major interest after prepping at Lee Academy in Vermont. Who saw Nodoye's talent? Most people scoffed at the Bonnies. Well, Youssou had the benefit in his first year to go up against another Bonnie great, Andrew Nicholson, who like Shoon was a pretty stalwart defender as well. Ndoye's development was remarkable, now in all fairness, he put in the work, but he left Bonaventure making the A10 third team, and was selected to the A10 All Defense team, three years running. That story is repeated over and over and over. This little basketball power house called St Bonaventure DEVELOPS great basketball talent. We don't offer everybody, but our staff sees something in players that they think are a fit for our system and look at guys who have come through that system, they are all playing at the next level.
