The way this roster has been put together in my mind, it is more of a re-load as opposed to a rebuild. I believe the talent is equal to or in some cases exceeding last years club. I am interested in your opinions but judgements are not based by highlite films.

There is certainly a TON of talent on this roster… however, we mustn’t underestimate the chemistry that the Iron 5 had with each other… I think it’s a partial reload, with more potential later in the season as the team gels… it makes the 2023-2024 season very intriguing.

I am interested in your opinions but judgements are not based by highlite films. As is often the case with Schmidt teams and with freshmen, I expect consistency issues in the first half of the year, hope fully, a rotation will develop and be good by tourney time.. The talent is definitely there. The one major issue for me is who takes the leadership mantle. Kyle was the leader the minute he hit campus, but I have not heard any stories like his yet. While Kyle did not improve that much in his years, his leadership was always strong and provided a stability that you can’t quantify. So the question is, who will take the reins?

I know this is a repeating theme from me, but the current era of college hoops deemphasizes experience and chemistry. One and done players. Revolving doors of transfers. Talented frosh… many who played an extra year at prep schools. Many teams have done complete rebuilds and reloads in one year. Last year it was Iowa State making the big dance with 7 transfers and only one returning starter from a team that went 2-20 and was winless in the Big 12. Dayton had 7 freshman and no seniors on their 24-11 team last year. Davidson brought in a transfer point guard who in a matter of months assumed a leadership role and helped to lead them to an NCAA bid. I would take talent and depth over experience. Chemistry is hard to prove. I thought the Bonnies, at times, had bad chemistry and body language last season. Like they lost their edge and mojo from the prior season. Time will tell but I like the 2022-23 roster and am excited to see what unfolds.

Thus Far height seems to be an unusal equalizer on this roster and maybe another waiting in the wings in Martinez at 6'10 + Chad & Max @ 6'10 Anquan 6'9, Barry 6'8, Anouar 6'8, Justin 6'7, Yann @ 6'6 with 6'11 wing span. This group has several different skill sets than former Bona players. I have never seen such height and potential at SBU. Sure hope MS can adjust and create a rotation that confuses all A10 frontcourts.Love the roster thus far and hope they start to jell over the summer.

Previous post is a solid post BigCat. Only question "the current era of college hoops deemphasizes experience and chemistry." I think experience and chemistry is the reason for St. Peters incredible 3 impressive wins in the NCAA Tournament. I agree with your "I would take talent and depth over experience," but experience and chemistry is an advantage St. Peters benefited from against Kentucky and Purdue.

I’ve always found Schmidt’s comments about a new signing very interesting. This is especially true of players signed this spring. — Schmidt’s comment about Yann "we expect Yann to step in right away on the wing as a true freshman” which I see as being extremely impressive for a freshman. — Schmidt used the words “will make an immediate impact” when describing Daryl, Moses, Kyrell and Anquan.” From Schmidt’s comments it is easy to assume the above most likely represent Bonnies starting lineup. Of course we all know to assume is a tricky word. Unlike the above, Schmidt’s comments about the 3 centers are different. — Anquan “had a successful freshman season, but we think he is just scratching the surface of his ability. We expect him to make an immediate impact for us next season.” — Chad “is an athletic five-man who has the ability to score the basketball both inside and out. We are excited to bring Chad into the program and expect him to make an impact next season." — Max “is a physical and mature 5-man who will have the opportunity to play meaningful minutes right away in our front court.” From Schmidt’s comments, it appears the rotation of the centers as being Anquan, Chad and then Max. Chad is an interesting center and as Schmidt states “expects him to make an impact next season” might very well be accurate. I do not expect Chad to start, but think he might make an “impact” off the bench. — Chad leads Bonnies incoming players with 27 blocks last year, which is impressive when you consider he only played 13.8 minutes per game. — Led Morgan State in scoring per 40 minutes played. He averaged a very impressive 21.0 points per 40 minutes. Playing an average starter’s 30 minutes a game, Chad’s total’s would be pro rated at 15.6 points and 6.5 rebounds. — If you check out Chad’s video you will see the “athletic five-man” Schmidt speaks of. He displays back to the basket offensive skills in the low post. — Another interesting fact is Schmidt recruited Chad out of Woodstock Academy. One of the few times, Bonnies sign a transfer they originally recruited. The big question with Chad is why did he play only 13.8 minutes a game for a bad Morgan State team. I wonder if it was Chad’s conditioning. As a reserve I wouldn’t expect Chad to play much more than 14 minutes a game. I’m hopeful Bonnies sign Melian Martinez, because he offers something missing from the centers on this team. Like Osun, Melian displays explosive athleticism. His blocks are reminiscent of Osun’s. Like Anquan, Melian also offers exciting upside. Schmidt's comment about Barry Evans is impressive "he's an open court type of player who has a huge upside and we're thrilled to have him join our family. He has the potential to be an impact player on our team next year." A significant difference from Yann's description is the words "step in right away" as compared to "potential to be an impact player." www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/morgan-state/2022.html

Chuck, love it.
Many, many unknowns. I know many folks will roll their eyes, hey it's a fan board.
Once we get past the past, which was great but this is now. I truly believe that Coach had a plan moving forward and that plan is all about a pressing, up tempo game and he went after Kyrell Luc, Moses Flowers and Daryl Banks III, with this plan in mind. I believe Rumpel, JNT and Mellouk fit this plan as well, long, athletic we are deep with wings/forwards to get out and go. That said, that length and athleticism also translates to the defensive end.
As for centers we can play the game a lot of ways, we go Hill when we match up with a team that we have to switch everything, play the 1-3-1 zone and certainly we when we press, which I believe will be often. To play that style of play, you have to be deep and I think we have t s to do just that. I see Vennings coming in working with Coach Fiske and continuing his physical transformation, I would not be surprised to see him play at 255. the same firr Max dropping some pounds to make himself quicker. Having a couple of big bodies is a luxury for this program, but I believe fitting into this uptempo system requires guys to get up and down the court. I recall watching Colorado last year big was 6'10" 258, tough to budge, but athletic. Max, when we got to see him on the court/looking back at hs/EBYL he can really run the court.
Melian Martinez, gives Schmidt a stopper in the middle he can turn to. I have to pinch myself to believe we are in the running for such a talented young man. I can see the rest of the A10 saying, "I thought that guy graduated". Farell and Evans ooze talent and Evans has spent the first summer session living in the RC. Will there be issues about playing time, for sure, but it won't be like last year, to play the style of ball I think this group has been built around, it's going to take a lot of bodies.

Don’t get me wrong… guys like Banks, Luc, Flowers and Hill all have experience and know-how… but it’s hard to underestimate how Kyle and Jaren would be able to throw lobs up for Shoon and Jalen… they had a connection on the floor… it will take some time for this team to gel like that.

That alley oop to shoon would be all day every day. Yes, it takes time for chemistry but today's college players play with new teammates all summer long in summer league which makes it easier to develop chemistry. I wouldn't worry about alley oops. LOL. My goodness

Before playing on the National team, Banks competed on The Patrick School high school team that won the 2017 Tournament of Champions title and featured former Kentucky and current Charlotte Hornets big man Nick Richards. Because that team was so deep, Banks didn’t see much playing time. Al Dawes, now at Clemson, and Alejandro Vasqueź were more of the primary ball handlers. I just thought this was interesting.
