Martinez is a redshirt. It is in the game notes every game. I love his engagement on the bench and I think the future is bright for him with a year in the weight room Speaking of the weight room--Schmidt in his brief press conference after the latest loss was asked about his use, finally, of Hill at the 5. He said flatly that Hill is not strong enough and "needs to spend a year in the weight room," to paraphrase...

I saw him practice before the season started Looked like a natural shot blocker At that very early stage he had a much better grasp of the offense than the other bigs He also seems to have a big playful air about him like Shoon-always smiling and dancing Young and light, I think the RS year, and a summer in the weight room will serve him and the Bonnies well

Just wondering if any has seen Melian in practice and can tell us anything. Early on the red shirt thing seemed to make sense with the rotation we've got, but we clearly need a guy that can protect the rim. I still think we need a big who can give us some shot blocking. I’ve watched Melian during practices. With his athleticism and build Melian reminds you of a young Osun. Blocking shots is Melian’s only skill that is at D-1 level. He played at one of the smallest schools in Florida and averaged just 8.1 ppg. Also have to question his level of coaching at such a small school and prior to that he was coached by his brother. He is extremely raw and as Hermit stated “he may need more than another year to be ready for the A-10.” Melian has exciting potential, but we are probably looking at Melian’s junior year, before he is ready to compete in the A-10. Chad is Bonnies rim protector and shot blocker. Chad is currently 5th in the A-10 in blocks. In Schmidt’s 16 years with Bona, he had just 4 other players in the A-10's top 5 shot blockers. Osun 4 times Andrew 3 Youssou 2 Denzel 1 www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/stats/_/season/2023/group/3

Inch for inch Denzel was better than the other 3. He mastered coming from behind a streaking player to make the block without fouling.
OSUN was great leaving his man in the paint to block a diving layup.
CHAD does that rarely but I feel he is actually better than OSUN making blocks when being posted up down low.
I still see Freemantle (6'9") coming off the bench late in our Xavier game & posting up OSUN down low. At the time I thought this will be an easy jump hook score against OSUN. It was at a critical point in the loss. As great a shot blocker that OSUN is he is beat down low 1 on 1 a lot.

Thanks for those folks who chimed in on Melian, I'm hoping it's this season and the summer on a couple of levels, can't see somebody waiting two years. Still, with that said, we clearly need another big in addition to Chad. The difference between Chad being in the game and not being in the game is noticeable. I thought Max would be able to give us more minutes, but it seems he has been us a bit more of a physical presence than anyone not named Venning and a little bit of rebounding, but getting a legit 4. like the JUCO TYSON BROWN, who someone similar out of the portal would be a real plus. Maybe the combination of said player and Melian able to come off the bench to contribute, and Hill having a summer to get stronger would get us there. I come back to what I mentioned earlier, that someone else had previously mentioned, I think Mellouk os a fprwardamd O tjoml that's where his future is. We don't know who will stay and who will go, but there is IMO a significant need for a 6'9" big body who can play down low, who can play down low, and spell Chad as well with quality minutes at the 5 as well. I'm way too much of an optimist, but I think we will find a guy.

Kid comes from a top NJ program going back to Milt Wagner days. I understand the kid is a 6'7 shooter. He is built like Evans and Hill. Can we please recruit guys that are not going to get run over or blown over by the wind. It will take 2 years of high level weight Training for us to get Evans,Hill, Melouk where staff wants them strength wise. Thank goodness they all have skill and potential.

Probably left a more negative impression of Melian than what I intended. Melian is an extremely raw basketball player. Can Melian develop into special player? I think he can. I remember first time I saw LaDarien play during the summer. I thought there is no way LaDarien is an A-10 player, much less a D-1 player. It made sense with Bona being his only D-1 offer. At the time LaDarien couldn’t shoot, couldn’t dribble and he was really skinny. Only thing he could do with his incredible vertical was dunk and block shots. Does this sound familiar? It is a perfect description of Melian, except Melian has a much better shot than LaDarien had when he was a freshman. As a freshman LaDarien was by far the worse player on the team. He played a total of 30 minutes. Next lowest on the team was Jordan Tyson with 364 minutes. Next season as a sophomore, LaDarien saw a significant improvement with his playing time. Increasing it to 357 minutes and averaging 2.7 ppg. Junior year LaDarien became a starter and led the team in blocks. As a senior he became a captain and one of the stars on the team. He averaged 10.7 ppg and was 2nd averaging 6.2 rebounds. It took LaDarien 3 years to develop from the worse player on the team to a starter. Then another year to develop into one of the stars of the Bonnies. Melian has a lot more potential than LaDarien as a freshman. It is easy to see that Melian has exciting potential. Just hopeful Melian stays at Bona and allow his game to develop. Everything is there for Melian to develop into a really special player. verbalcommits.com/players/ladarien-griffinwww.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/ladarien-griffin-1.html

Based on your description of watching him in his "rookie" year, Chuck, I realize that more and more and become even more impressed about Griffin's work ethic and determination! I remember LaDarien for so much hustle on the court when he did have the chance his sophomore campaign. He was diving all over the floor for loose balls, among other things. LaDarien worked his tsil off for his starting time at Bonas and earned it!!! Wish ww could more Bonnies work as hard as #15!!!!

LaDarien was probably my favorite player in recent years to watch develop. Every year he got better, one step at a time he fought through his limitations with hard work. He deserves everything he gets because he was not the most naturally talented player, but he worked himself into a player that can make a living at it. Awesome story.

Watching Ladarian in warmups his first year he just looked really awkward and uncoordinated. He definitely put in a ton of work. Dion Wright is another that really made a huge jump. He was decent coming in but his senior year he had the total package.

I still can visialize the block in the Syracuse game, shot was a corner 3, he somehow blocked it from the side and was able to corral it.

LaDarien's best one was URI in 2018... a dunk at one end of the floor, lost his shoe, blocked a drive to the hoop by Terrell and then got the rebound... incredible display of athleticism!

I was trying to remember that sequence of plays by Griffin because it just summarizes his hustle in Brown and White....
