That Dishman guy looked really built. That was a good team we beat. The new guys really play hard and get better (NO knock on the former players just enjoy the new energy and skills. Also, no intent to hurt any bandwagon feelings.) How have we won this many games without 2.9 blocks from shoon? ? Because blocks don't fucking matter. Venning would probably eat him up. No need to diss Shoon. And Chad? It was his block with 14 seconds left that sealed the win Yeah, duh. It's like the guy didn't even watch the game. Not only did Venning's block seal it but Barry Evans' huge block with the Bonnies up by 1 late was probably even a bigger moment

Is Dishman on the 10-yr. plan? He’ll have 2 PhD degrees by the time he graduates! The Dishman did also dish for 3 buckets...had to say it.

Good to see Rumpel get in there--couple weeks before I expected--so now after all the speculation for past 18 months we can see what he can do. I have been in the agnostic camp, although early on I pointed naysayers to his AAU highlights. His drive to the basket from the key was quickest we've seen all year--but he missed shot. Then he had a great D sequence--but came back and played a little wild and nearly had TO. But glimpses, and size, very intriguing....and Flowers with another flawed game (and not trusted by Schmidt in 2nd half).

Debatable comment from the coach with “that was a good team we beat.” Can you be a good team if you lack the important fundamental of shooting the basketball? Check out their extreme stats. — Shooting 28.8% from 3s, which is 330th in the nation. 330th must be pretty close to last. — Making 65.8% of their free throws, which is 285th in the nation. — Outscored their opponents off turnovers by 43 points (151 -108). — Prior to last night’s game they were out rebounding their opponent by 46 rebounds (243-197). — Prior to last night’s game they attempted 35 (143-108) more free throw than their opponents. MTSU is a very unique team. I'm still not sure how good of a team is MTSU. Just thankful Bonnies didn’t schedule them for the 1st game. Prior to the game my biggest concern was MTSU’s press. It looks intimidating, but wasn’t much of a factor. Bonnies did a good job handling their press. Key individual performances — Kyrell was without a doubt the MVP. He was leading scorer in game with 22 points, but just as important was his ball handling. He was very effective taking the ball to the basket. MTSU was forcing opponents close to 20 turnovers a game. Bonnies committed just 15 with Kyrell as PG. — Chad gets his 3rd foul in the opening minute of the 2nd half. Max came in for Chad and set an attitude that he isn’t intimidated by MTSU’s physical game. In just 1 minute of play he blocked 2 dunk attempts and was called for his physical play on defense. All 3 were called fouls on Max. I thought Max helped to change the complexion of the game in the 1 minute he played. — Chad returned at 9:48 mark in 2nd half with the Bonnies down 47-45. From that moment, Bonnies would outscore MTSU by 9 points for rest of the game. Chad was an important factor in the last 9 minutes of the game. gobonnies.com/sports/mens-basketball/stats/2022-23/middle-tennessee/boxscore/5776goblueraiders.com/sports/mens-basketball/statswww.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/middle-tennessee/2023.html

So I’d say they’re good.

Some thoughts on game: first half was a mess. We were out hussled and beatv up 2nd half we were grittier and hussled much more. Banks, while he can get streaky good and hit foul shots at crunch time, needs to play much more under control. He forces entirely too many things in the game, which is surprising, considering he’s a third year player with lots of experience.. there were several times when we flat out did not handle the press well. The offense is entirely too one-dimensional right now. Got to get Evans and Farrel more involved but theyre frosh and it will come. Last night was a great learning experience for the team. I am sure and I was impressed with how they turned it on in the second half. Middle Tennessee was impressive. Had they hit threes and fall shots by different different outcome but that’s the way things go. I hope we can keep this crew together. Because they could be special.

I agree it was good to finally seeing Brett on the court. Difficult to make much of an assessment from his 2 minutes on the court. Like Greg I thought Brett looked quick and looked like he belonged competing with physical and aggressive defenders at D-1 level. It is important as Joryam was rattled his 1st appearance last year.

Let's give the defense credit. Can't point to particular player's contributions but for 2 consecutive games against tough opponents who included three point scoring as a strength, we took away that part of their game and won.

They entered the game at 5-2 and have a top 100 defensive rating. So I’d say they’re good. I didn't say MTSU is not good. I just question how good they are. Are they a top 100 NET team, which is a mark of a really good mid major? They very well could be, but their trouble with shooting could keep them out top 100 NET teams.

Quote from MSTU fan page - very fair assessment before the game
Yes, despite SBU having to replace practically every member of their squad due to new portal policy their coaching staff turned around & used it extremely well for their own purposes. They are already a good team & will do nothing but get better throughout the year. If we are to catch them it should be now, even at that it will take our best offensive, defensive, & coaching effort of the year so far. Probably no one other than our own players & coaches are anticipating a win here. Being said I think the young men are coming into their own & could pull it out.

Agree with a lot of your points here. I’m not as surprised with Banks forcing things a bit even given his experience. Saint Peter’s seemed to be pretty balanced last year and Banks (although could get hot and carry, like Kentucky) didn’t have the pressure of carrying the offense every night. He averaged the most PPG on the team at 11.3, but only led by 0.8 PPG. They also had six guys splitting 20+ mins. Given the co-captaincy and his near 40 mpg here at Bona’s, he probably feels compelled to do more than maybe he should at times - just pure speculation though. I definitely agree with this team possibly being special, and hopefully as others step up in certain spots, Banks can let the game come to him a little bit more.

Great win for the Bonnie’s and a very hard fought and entertaining game. Our guys found a way and closed it it out. The length, size and athleticism of the MTSU players was impressive. I’m grateful they struggled with their free throws last night. Dishman looked like an action hero and looked taller than 6’6” (though that’s still pretty tall). He reminded me of a player from UB a few years ago that had a GI Joe like build.
I agree that Max’s brief appearance seemed to change the character of the game. He was a take no prisoners terminator type of defender and that tough defense continued after he sat down.
One funny moment in the first half after Rumpel’s drive to the hoop - #5, Lawrence from MTSU came over to their bench and said (paraphrasing), “who is that #24 guy, he’s really fast, blew right by me”.

The best thing about Brett’s brief appearance was the aggressiveness and confidence he displayed. Like he was wound up waiting on that moment for 12 months.
In contrast, Moses seems tentative most of the time — possibly unsure of his role. Moses is coming along but I would say “slowly” based on someone with a year experience and some success success at the low D1 level. Last year probably didn’t prepare him for a limited reserve role.
I see a much higher ceiling for Brett. He has a great handle and likely a better understanding of the system. IMO he can play the 1 and the 2 which eventually should move him into a 6th man role. Question is will Schmidt play Brett with Luc and Banks — or will he be a backup who only sees a few minutes each half.
