How many times does a designed play worked at the end? i thought were trying to set up Ferrel, but they overplayed. Usually at the end games a broken play wins. Consistency again was lacking on the road. They did a lot of things right in spurts and a lot of things wrong in spurts. I thought the two biggest things was losing the rebounding battle and obviously the free throws.

After playing poorly we were down 11 with 5:08 to play. I saw nothing all game that gave me confidence that we could make it close much less win.
But these kids didn't give up. They made stop after stop after stop to prevent URI from scoring another basket the final 5 mins and went on a 12 point run to take the lead. Failing in the final 15 secs to score had to be a gut punch. Hope they rebound against the Spiders on Saturday.
-13 points from the stripe a big factor in the loss & a continuing pattern.
Leggett had more points from the stripe (10) then our entire team!
Sure wish I saw the highlight dunk by MOSES that the camera man missed. Announcer said it was the most thunderous dunk he had seen at their place.

Late Rally Falls Just Short at Rhode Island, 68-67 1/11/2023 | Men's Basketball KINGSTON, R.I. - An 11-0 run in the final minutes gave the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team the lead with 33 seconds left, but Rhode Island's Ishmael Leggett made good on both attempts at the line following a Bonnies foul to send the Rams to a 68-67 victory Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.
St. Bonaventure kept Rhode Island off the board over nearly three and a half minutes, making a furious rally that saw the visitors erase a 11-point deficit in the waning moments.
Daryl Banks III put the exclamation mark on Bona's rally with a traditional three-point play, tying the game with his runner in the lane before giving the Bonnies the lead, 67-66, with 33 seconds left.
Unfortunately for the Bonnies, a whistle on the defensive end proved doubly costly - not only did it send Leggett to the line, but it also resulted in the fifth foul on Moses Flowers.
St. Bonaventure (8-9, 2-2 A-10) had three chances for the win in the final trip down the floor, but couldn't get a shot to fall as time expired.
"We showed some character; we didn't give in, we made some stops and some big buckets late, but those are things you need to do for 40 minutes," St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt said. "We fouled at the end and that was one of too many mistakes to overcome. We had a couple good shots at the end, they just didn't go in."
Kyrell Luc led the team with 20 points, adding nine assists and five steals in an all-around effort. Flowers produced 15 points off the bench for the Bonnies.
Both teams started slow, as one might have predicted from a matchup between two clubs that have each experienced struggles on the offensive end at times in the early season.
St. Bonaventure started 5-for-20 from the floor, but Rhode Island never pulled away by more than eight during the opening half. Further complicating matters, both Banks and Chad Venning picked up two fouls before the game was seven minutes old, including Venning being whistled for his third before intermission.
Luc put himself into double-figure scoring before the break, though, with he and Moses Flowers providing the scoring spark as the Bonnies pulled within a bucket at halftime.
The sophomore point guard turned on the jets for Bona's first score of the second half and a tie game, but Rhody soon had its largest lead of the day, 44-35, with 13:20 to play.
The visitors closed within five again, 46-41, two minutes later following a Flowers dunk and low post moves from Venning, but again the Rams squelched the Bonnies efforts to gain traction.
Rhode Island (6-10, 2-2) took its first lead of double digits at the 11-minute mark, but Bona clawed back within two possessions following a pair of Anquan Hill dunks.
The Rams took their largest lead with 5:08 remaining, leading by 11 when the Bonnies roared back.
Leggett paced all scorers with 23 points, also hauling in 14 rebounds. Rhode Island led on the boards, 44-36.
"Against any team on the road it's hard to come back and we keep putting ourselves in that position. We battled back and just came up a little short," Schmidt said. "The first two offensive plays of the game they had two offensive rebounds and put-backs; we need to do a better job of rebounding. We got within two and then give up an offensive rebound and a shot and then it's four, that's just something you can't do. Leggett is their leading offensive rebounder and he got four tonight. That is stuff we can control and we didn't do that."
Banks finished with 12 points and three assists with Venning recording 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Bonnies are back in action Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. vs. Richmond on USA Network.

Yeah our guys don’t give up and yeah we only lost by one, but the reality is that we have given away almost every game on the road except for UB and SLU, where we got pounded.
Playing poorly against bad teams is not a reason for hope. We are a pretty darn good team at home, for a group with little experience playing together. On the road we play with no energy, passion, intelligence etc.
Yeah most A10 teams are struggling on the road. That’s what makes this game so frustrating because it was there for the taking and could have put us right near the top of the league.
The win would have given us a little confidence. We need Schmidt and Co to figure out why we play so un-aggressively away from home and at a much lower IQ.
We need to stop relying on jump shots that seldom fall for us on the road. We were bricking three balls for most of the night. Like to see somebody in Brown n White run over two defenders trying to get to the hoop. We saw Yann take it strong to the rim twice in the second half vs UMass. Then not again in the next 3 games.
Guys are not learning the simple things needed to win on t he road. Let’s get two wins at home vs Richmond and Duquesne — both teams got road wins tonight so they will be tough tests for us.

I don’t think Luc was 100% for the last minute of the game. Watch what happened on his take with about 1:16 left on the game clock. He goes down hard and comes up limping. He barely walks his way up to half court and seems unable to keep up until Rhode Island calls the time out. I saw it initially and rewatching the rest of the game, it looks like he is slower and less explosive. It may have affected how that last play went down.

Last four road games at the foul line… outscored by 14, 10, 15 and 14.
Last two home games we were minus 11 and -5 at the FT line.
Big difference is that Banks and friends normally make more threes at home, which fuels our D.
Last several seasons the Bonnies dominated the FT line. We seldom committed fouls and had guys who were strong taking it to the rim… and excellent FT shooters.
We cannot survive in the A10 playing passively and relying on outside shots. That is all mindset.
Banks took it strong and made a huge 3 point play to put us up 1 with 18 seconds left. Luc had a couple of nice takes to the hoop, but no other guys play down hill. It’s usually tentative and often scared offensive play.

It is pretty incredible that we lost that game. We took 15 more shots than URI and they had twice as many turnovers!!
say what you want about the offense but I think it is too much aggression on defense. URI wasnt even running plays they were just driving right to the rim and they were rewarded.
-Maybe a zone is needed for some stretches of the game? (10-15 mins of basketball play that is it. Would generate less turnovers but it would be a chunk of gameplay with less fouls) - Less Mellouk/Venning and more Amadasun? (IMO Max has shown an ability to not foul as much as those guys, certainly not as much as Mellouk. And Venning when he gets tired
Idk just spitballing

Overly aggressive play on D and not enough aggression on O is hurting us. We commit a lot of bad fouls 25 to 30 feet from the basket. We bail out opponents too often in the final 4 seconds of the shot clock. Flowers’ attempted steal and foul on Rhody’s final possession was a killer. They had not scored for 4 minutes. We did play zone for a good part of yesterday’s game. Why don’t we play in the final minute once we are up 1? Venning takes too many chances on D when he should just get big and wall up. He picked up a foul in the first half yesterday chasing a rebound or loose ball near our basket. Ref did not have to blow that whistle but Venning’s size and strength made him appear guilty.

Venning just gets tired and grabby, I love him and he has some monster in his game but I dont think he should be logging 30+ minutes yet
When they give up an offensive rebound they almost always commit a foul. I get it they are frustrated with not closing out the possession but they need to remember to not let up on defense

The final 15 secs was a gut punch to a young team whose confidence would have been bolstered by an impressive come from behind run IFFFFF they left the floor with their first road win. And boarding a flight home realizing they accomplished what had not been achieved at URI in 9 years.
Felt bad as I saw them walk off the floor wiith drooped shoulders and pained looks.

Last night's tough loss is the latest in scoring SIX (and 2 more TREYS) more baskets but loosing due to the differential in points scored at the charity stripe.
Hard to overcome the 15 more points the Rams earned at the line. Give URI credit. Their attacking the rim created the disparity as well as making 83% (well above their 73%).

Flowers attempted steal did not bother me. RI's pass was not a crisp one. Maybe Moses needed another half step, but it was close. He would have had a layup or an intentional foul. I'm not a fan of letting URI running the clock down for the last shot and lose. Better to put pressure on a turnover prone team. One of the Bonnies' worst plays was a too long pass to the right corner that wasn't even close to be completed. It was easily intercepted. Moses play was a good try. But there were too many bonehead plays on offenses to overcome. When the Iron Five played at URI as freshman, they looked just as bad.

Missed first half. Who said URI struggles on offense? They took the ball to the hoop making easy buckets and drawing fouls. I saw too many uncontested shots and players out of position on defense. Outside of Venning no one hits the boards consistently. Offensively we are inconsistent with little contribution from the forwards. The players appear a step too slow and confused. Challenging to put a whole new squad on the floor. Schmidt will need to figure out how to get some consistency from these guys. Would like to see Moses step up as a leader of this team.

My big beef with the game yesterday was a 6'3 guard banging us around and pulling down 14 rebounds. Leggett is a nice player but a mid-sized guard owning us on the boards like that was gross!
Loved the game Luc played and Flowers looks really solid as well. I also liked the minutes from Hill, that was the best he's looked. I can't wait for him to see a 3 pointer go thru the basket, once he makes one I think more will begin to fall. We gotta figure out how to get the Freshmen going in these games.

2 plays from yesterday’s game sum up the Bonnies struggles on the road.
Yann Farell had a terrific block of a jump shot. URI was forced to inbound the ball with 5 seconds on the shot clock. Flowers inexplicably fouls a 3 point shooter. Giving Rhody 3 free points.
Banks puts the Bonnies up 1 with a heroic and 1 basket. Bonnies were one stop away from an improbable win. Flowers, once again, commits a terrible foul 30 feet from the basket. You can’t gamble for a steal in that situation.
Until this team learns to play disciplined and defend without fouling, they will continue to struggle away from home.
