I have my doubts on whether people in Kentucky will ever accept and support a Pope. This coaching carousel is all perception. Arkansas and KY were reaching the end of the line with their highly paid coaches so they both bailed. The perception in Fayetteville is that Arkansas landed one of the top coaches in America. They actually lost a coach who has been to the Elite 8 twice plus a Sweet 16 in the last 4 seasons. Calipari has not reached the Sweet 16 since 2018. Yes KY has had more regular season success than AR the last 20 years, but their fans don’t care. Mark Pope is a solid coach (and alum), but like NC and Duke programs it is hard to replace a legend who can bring in a top 5 recruiting class each year. |
