St. Joe's is impressive and Villanova game may not have been a one-off. They are 5-2 and their 2 losses are against #17 Kentucky in overtime and by only 3 against a good Texas A&M team. They will be tough. Last night also saw Dayton beat Rob Lanier's SMU and Davidson over Charlotte. Too bad LaSalle lost to temple in triple overtime. Had many opportunities for the win. It was second string teams down the stretch as each team had 5 players foul out. Yes, I am also impressed with St Joe’s. Yet, they are up and down like other teams we are familiar with. That Texas A&M team is not the team you are thinking of. They were a 2-4 team out of the Southland conference. They actually had a bad game vs the Hawks, in Philly. Yet St Joe was absolutely terrible! College hoops is very unpredictable anymore.

It wasn't your dad's Texas A&M. it was Texas A&M-Commerce that St. Joe's lost to. That makes our Canisius loss look good (I wish they were called UCLA-Canisius though so we could say we lost to UCLA )

St Louis is getting hammered by S.Illinois … down 40 in the final minutes. Go figure.

St Louis was monsters on the boards. Just one area where they are now weak.

Watch out for SJU this winter. They have kids who can knock down 3-balls w impunity. Don't sleep on LaSalle, either.

I know this is a general statement … but to me it appears that every A10 team is improved over last season except for possibly Fordham and SLU. And those two teams likely will be better by late Jan/Feb.
VCU has a new coach and a very aggressive schedule. The eye-test tells me they will be a top tier A10 team despite the 4-4 record. Their Net Ranking is 54.
St Joe’s looks like the team to beat right now along with Dayton.
A10 Conference Power Rank is #8 in Warren Nolan and in RPI.

I am not sure if I reported on this before but I am sure the oldsters here will recall the Nelson twins from Duquesne, who at 6’11” were supposed to be the Dukes’ answer to Bob Lanier but even with a 2-1 advantage, never were. Last June one of the twins, Garry, passed away at age 73. In addition to playing for the Dukes, he had been drafted by the NBA Buffalo Braves. He had gone to Duquesne Law school and had worked at various jobs in the Pittsburgh legal community.

It is the all important OOC schedule, that plays a vital role in a conference NET ranking. So far the A-10 has been doing really well. Following is how the A-10 stands half way through its OOC schedule. It is important to note conference rankings do not move much after OOC schedule. -- Currently A-10 has NET conference ranking of 8, which is much improved over last season's final ranking of 12. -- Currently A-10 teams have a 75-38 record for a 66.4% winning record. Last season A-10 finished OOC with 109-78 record, just 31 wins more than losses. This season A-10's wins almost double their losses. -- Currently A-10 doesn't have a team with a losing record. Last season A-10 had 6 teams finish OCC schedule with losing records. -- So far, bottom half of the A-10 is much better than last season. Hoping A-10 can continue with their very successful OOC schedule. It becomes very important, when it comes time to select at large teams for the NCAA tournament. www.warrennolan.com/basketball/2023/net-conferencewww.warrennolan.com/basketball/2024/net-conference

I believe history will be on A10’s side if conference rank is 9 or higher. Usually translates into multiple bids. We will see how the OOC wraps up.
Lots of big games ahead vs strong mid-majors and P6 opponents. See partial list below.
Geo Mason vs Tenn tonight, and vs Tulane
St Joe’s vs Princeton and Coll of Charleston
VCU vs Memphis and Temple
UD vs Cincy
Richmond vs FLA
LaSalle vs Miami FL
UMass vs Ga Tech
Bonas vs FAU and Akron
Not only important to win or hang tough vs better teams but also to beat lower ranked teams convincingly, as SBU has the last two games.
Side note… Princeton has a net ranking of 9. Tremendous!!

I watched the GW/Navy game tonight. GW won 79-77 in OT. GWs team I had very good athletes but they are are extremely disorganized on both defense and offense. Their center had 11 blocks tonight and if Navy had any talent inside, they could have won easily. GWs record of 7-2 is very misleading.
