Biggest stunner of the night in the A10 was Rhody knocking off St Joe’s. Of course, VCU fans will say the Bonnies’ victory is the biggest stunner.
Home teams won only 2 of the 7 games. That tells me there are several teams not just more talented than last season — but also more mentally tough.

I don’t know, Loyola winning at St. Louis was pretty stunning. SLU in the midst of an off year, sitting 7-7 one game into the league schedule. Still wanna seethe Majeris cartoon whenever we play them.

Still wanna seethe Majeris cartoon whenever we play them. Loyola is a good to solid team and SLU is quite frankly pretty mediocre. Not sure that was much of a surprise. What Mason did on the road and how Duquesne performed against a so-so UMass team seem more surprising to me. Saint Joe's losing on the road really hurts. Also disappointing to see GW lose to an awful Fordham team.

Watched LaSalle barely hold on to win at Fordham after having a solid lead most of the game. Both teams have solid guards and holes up front, with real weakness in free throw shooting by their bigs. Frankly neither team was all that impressive, both are 1-1. Fordham in particular looked very impatient on offense, with a lot of one-on-one play if a pass or two didn’t result in an easy hoop. Maybe Urgo will solve that eventually, but hopefully not by next week.
And now watching Mason at home toasting St. Louis by 18 with under 12 left. With loss the Billikens will be 0-2. Mason looked very strong with starting five, not sure about depth as they were not tested today.

Tuesday 1/9 should be an interesting night in the A10. 1-0 URI is at 0-1 Davidson, 0-2 VCU travels to 2-0 GMU. And 1-0 Richmond is at 2-0 Loyola. Pretty big early season challenges for early front runners Mason and Loyola while another loss would put expected front runner VCU in an early season hole. I think I will go on Plus to watch VCU and GMU, to see if the Patriots are for real and see if VCU has found a point guard.

Rhode Island. knocks of Davidson on the road 79-74 they will be a tough home match up. Watching a real good game Richmond on top of Loyola of Chicago by 3 with three minutes to play at Chicago. Loyola looks good, the whole league looks tough. Bonnies better bring some good defense Saturday if their offense stalls against Fordham, defense can get the offense rolling in many cases.

VCU wins by 4, Mason blew 2 chances in last 20 seconds... Crushing defeat for the Bonnies bid in getting a critical Q1 win. George Mason’s NET dropped 13 spots with loss to VCU. Being an away game for the Bonnies, George Mason’s 71 NET is now barely a Q1 game. Currently Dayton and George Mason are Bonnies only chance for a Q1 win. Hopefully George Mason can keep their NET 75 or under. Need to root for George Mason and UMass for rest of A-10 regular season. UMass has shown improvement with their NET. UMass NET has dropped 12 spots in 2 weeks. Their current 80 NET is very close to becoming a Q1 game for the Bonnies, with it being an away game. www.warrennolan.com/basketball/2024/team-rank?team=UMass

Looking at tonight’s game, usually you’d think the SJU-SLU game would involve teams higher in the standings then the LaSalle-UMass game, but right now it’s the opposite, with neither of St. Joes or St. Louis having a single league win between them, placing both at the bottom of the too-early-to-matter league standings. But it is odd to me to look at the standings and seeing it upside down compared to the typical expected list. I watched parts of all three games last night and I believe this could be a big year for us. I suppose it could be attributable to teams playing solid D overall, but from what I have seen, there just doesn’t look to be many league-wide stars that the league has had the previous several years - for example, Tyler Burton, Grady, etc. I think we have five guys who in any game could go off for five threes and 20 or more points and most other teams would be hard pressed to identify more than two such players on their roster. Plus we continue to focus on solid team D under Schmidt’s thinking that is ahead of most other teams, although some appear to be catching on. Still, I think our numerous shooters give us a big advantage, particularly if Assa and Banks return to their previous year’s shooting abilities (I know, that’s a BIG IF). But I just haven’t seen other league teams with the potential we have. Is that overly optimistic, or too soon (admittedly, I haven’t seen everyone play and of those I have seen, I have only seen once ) - but the league seems to have only a few real top quality three point shooting threats and we have five.

Ceharv, good points but it’s a Catch 22. We have more weapons and depth than most teams yet we have seen so many long scoring droughts in our losses. Ugly offense.
I hate to beat on the coaching staff that has been exceptional for the most part through the decade+ … but it is their job to maximize the talent and reach full potential. And win!
I don’t get or like Schmidt mentioning the “poor attention during the pre-game walk through”. Does he ever take the blame in public for bad performances? If not, then don’t send messages like that to your team and fans. It’s a bad look.

What is going on with St Joe’s? They lost at St Louis 88-85 this evening.
The Hawks have beaten Nova, Princeton, Temple (they’re not good), and lost to KY in OT.
They are now 0-2 in the A10 along with Duquesne and Davidson. This is shaping up to be an exciting but unpredictable season.
