Our offense easy to defend especially with Venning holding the ball while the rest of the team stands and watches. We don’t have players that can create their own shot or drive to hoop. This team lacks a rebounding forward and a difference maker. We had 2 five minute scoreless stretches today. As bad as we played we were leading coming into the last 6 minutes and then started getting sloppy with the ball. GM is not a good team. Schmidt is trying to win games with a defense that has too many lapses. Pounding it in to Venning and relying on 3’s is not a great strategy offensively to win games.

I don't understand this chart. What's BPM stand for??? Also, how did Brock get time today??? Normally we have to be up 40 for a walk on to play
Also, maybe put flowers back to a non starter b/c he scored more off the bench. I don't know what to do with banks. Barry does everything and rebounds well and deserves more PT. Most improved player on the team-REWARD Him

What I’m about to say won’t be popular but…
We have to begin questioning whether Schmidt is the right guy any longer… let’s face it, this is one of the best collections of talent that he’s ever assembled with significant depth, and they are underachieving.
Two years ago we had an amazing amount of talent with the Iron 5, and we didn’t even go dancing.
MS has proven to be a great recruiter, but this program is stuck in no-man’s land and should be performing at a higher level now… it feels like we’ve hit a plateau with no upward trajectory in sight.
Just my $0.02, but if we’re paying Mark $millions, then he has to be held accountable.

There's been a lot of change since covid and NIL. Other teams add good players just like Schmidt does. He has Done great getting talent on campus. Other coaches may not even be able to do that in this day and age. I think with all the changes Schmidt has had to deal with over the last few years he's done pretty well. He lost his entire team 2 years ago and still survived. If you lose 10 players it is hard to come back from that. The main thing in the a-10 is to finish top 4 in conference and get that bye for the a-10 tournament. It's not that big of a deal to lose a few games here and there in todays NCAA basketball. Unfortunately, Bona's could win every game in conference and lose the 3 day A-10 conference and not make the tourney.
Also the IRON 5 never got better. Not sure if Schmidt is to blame or if it was just player laziness not improving.

There’s no creativity with this team. Every possession looks the same. Venning runs down the court. Calls for the ball for 10 seconds. We try to force it in to him. He catches it 15 feet from the basket. Everybody stands around and watches him. If that doesn’t work, we end up throwing up a random shot. There’s no direction or consistency to the offense.
How do we go from scoring 99 points to 60?
I believe our guards are the strength of this team. When we move the ball and make purposeful passes, we get good looks. We only had 6 total assists today and that’s a sign of the stagnant offense.
If it wasn’t for Barry, there would be little to be encouraged by this season.
I don’t have a good feeling about Tuesday, either. Duquesne will be hungry for their first conference win.

It honestly should have been granted to teams that had a legitimate NCAA tournament shot.

The Bonnies have all the pieces to the puzzle but, they just can't put it together. Too inconsistent and I don't see that changing ( no floor General )
Next year...
To all the Wagoneers stay safe and stay healthy

Flowers has been a strong contributor all year - he had an off game. Daryl had a great game against RI and then fell right back into his slump.

Interesting reading all the analysis of the game and what our Bonnies must do better especially on the offensive end.
I watched the replay of the game which usually provides a better analysis and sometimes corrects impressions I had watching live. The ability to rerun plays with the benefit of stop action sheds a lot of light on positioning and more.
I tracked our shots to see why there was a lid on the basket in the first half especially early on to put us in a 20-7 hole. That's not a good place to be when they are 24-27 at home and 11-0 when leading at the half. The lid was somewhat lifted in the 2nd half but we missed an awful lot of created good looks and scoring opportunities. I counted 22 shots that were not toughly challenged but rolled off the rim & were in and outs. These were very good look shots that typically we make.
MOSES (6) and CHAD (6) had the greatest # of these type shots.
In spite of a terrible shooting performance we battled back, went on a 21-5 run that was fueled by causing them to turn it over. Our pressure put us up 5 with 7:15 to play.
Then, as we have done in the past, TOs late in the game proved to a big factor in the loss. Over the course of the season we take care of the rock (10.8) with a #4 TO Margin. Yesterday we had only 6 TOs 33 mins into the game. Then with 7 to play we coughed it up 6 times denying an opportunity to extend the 5 point lead we worked so hard for.
That and CHUCK being held to 3 points were too much to overcome when we were in a position to get a valuable road win.
Getting to the line more is a goal we have not achieved. After we took a 5 point lead with 7:15 to go GM scored 22 points with 12 points coming from the stripe. We scored 2 from the line (2-2) in that period of time. Being outscored by 10 from the line in the closing mins of a close game, along with the 6 late TOs and missing so many makeable shots ensures a road loss.

Coach Schmidt is absolutely not immune from criticism and IMHO he deserves some for the predictability of the offense. That said, some of these posts are comical.
The idea that the University should be thinking of moving on demonstrates a lack of understanding of the current landscape and SBU's place in it.
The rest of the schools in the A10 (most of which are significantly larger institutions with more resources) are also trying to win basketball games. They also have talented players and strong coaches. We were the underdogs yesterday. A winnable game, sure...but not one that we "should" win according to the odds. Poor shooting (even when faced with a "good" shot as wgt outined above) played a big role in the loss...something that coach can hardly be held responsible for. It happens.
I am not arguing for an unlimited leash for Schmidt. My argument is that replacing him would be far more likely to result in decline of the program than improvement. That calculus may change over time, but I think is almost certainly true right now. The most likely outcome (based on our resources relative to the rest of the conference) if we were to move on from Schmidt is that we would perennially finish at/near the bottom of the league.
While I find myself frustrated with this team from time to time, I am realistic enough to understand that Coach Schmidt is a net positive and it's not even close. He's worth every penny he is paid and we're lucky that he has embraced the culture/community. I sincerely hope he's still coaching if/when my 8th grade daughter elects to attend SBU. I think that would make it MUCH more likely that she's watching a good team play meaningful games in a fun atmosphere at the RC.
Go Bonnies!

Any player or team that didn't have a legitimate shot to make the tournament shouldn't have gotten it.
He had them for four years (last time I checked that is a traditional in college) and they made one tournament and got embarrassed.
11-6 (no quality out of conference wins). I do not know whether its time to move on, but 17 years never made it past the real first round of 32 (winning a real game in the dance). The last few years the a10 has been bad.

Compared with the previous 17 years when our resume was what exactly?

There's no way to tell if the next coach will be better than Schmidt or not, but I can promise you this, if he's even remotely successful he will be gone faster than he arrived.
SLU, Richmond, Saint Joe's, Duquesne, UMass and countless other programs have solid to large MBB budgets and still have made puzzling hires with inconsistent success. Then you have programs like VCU, Dayton and Mason that have lost their coaches, but have kept the program going through multiple coaches leaving.

In Mark we should trust we are the most consistently competitive team in A-10 over what??? the last decade plus?? We have had amazing moments of success and equally amazing moments of frustration...Pick the year/group of players...My take is we have talent & potential however we lack a DOG a true DOG..."GIVE ME THE BALL" "I AM FEARLESS AND WANT THE SHOT" In years past we need a bucket ...Hey Jay, Hey Mobley, Hey Posley, Hey Andrew, Hey Stockard, Hey Houston, etc etc..... Who's that guy on this roster today?? George Mason game clutch time the ball was a hot potato you take it I don't want it pass pass pass pass....Shot clock violation or desperation heave... NEED MORE DOGS.... Mark doesn't take the shots and we had plenty of opportunities to thump George Mason and others however we either miss the bunnies or go into long droughts of no buckets...7 minute- 8 minute stretches plus...I have faith we will get better, we will improve...and again be competitive during A-10... Look at the Rhody Game...we could play with just about anyone in the country that day with the level of Defense & Offense displayed....just gotta bottle it and uncork nightly....Sadly in the NIL/PORTAL world when we finally figure it out we will have to go back to drawing board and start all over again with building chemistry....Last note...GIVE ME MORE SPARK PLUG BARRY he's a dog and when he figures out scoring he will be a junkyard dog...GO BONA's For Life!
