We’re all grateful for what MS has meant and done for the school and program… without a doubt, he deserves a statue next to the Reilly Center… so it brings me great pain to pose the questions below:
- Has Mark Schmidt peaked and is he on the way down? - What could lead to him to change his coaching style and extend his career here as the head of the program?
We can’t keep squandering talent and not making the Big Dance, especially in the day and age of NIL and needing all of the funds we can get to put forth a competitive team.

That may be true… but the program might go down with him… I certainly value the program over him.

Up to this point, I thought Schmidt’s worst coaching job was the 2012/13 season. The year after we won the A10 tournament. He followed it by not making the A10 tournament. A loss at home to Fordham sealed our fate.
This team has talent. I don’t think it’s being utilized correctly. When we play well, it’s sparked by sharing the ball and 3 pt shooting. When we don’t play well, it’s due to stagnant offense and forcing the ball to Chad. I believe he took 7 of our first 9 shots tonight. That’s not a winning formula or how you ignite an offense. Pride needs to be more involved. I’ll let this season play out and cling to the hope we get hot in Brooklyn. Realistically, this season will end unceremoniously. If things don’t turn around, this will be Schmidt’s worst coaching job to date.

Schmidt got a huge raise two years ago based on what he accomplished in the past and the timing of the UMass job opening. It makes him untouchable until the end of his contract or longer for a small school overspending to keep its program on the national radar. Not sure when the contract expires.
His team is playing uninspired basketball. No intensity or heart the second half of the season. Last year they peaked in late Jan/early Feb — and fell off the map by losing 7 of 8 down the stretch.
This year’s team was much better defensively and offensively until a few weeks ago. We are showing ZERO signs of consistency or gelling for a stretch run.
If it’s our players who are the issue then the coaching staff is not bringing in the right transfers and frosh. I feel we have landed some excellent talent in Assa, Evans, Mika, Pride, Brown, Rose and Thompson. This is unprecedented depth for Mark’s tenure.
Chad has developed into a solid A10 big man. Banks had several games of 25+ points last season. Moses was the best 6th man in the A10 until he became a starter.
Yet we are stuck in the middle of the A10 for the second straight season … with a coach to my knowledge has NEVER publicly accepted blame or admitted that he’s struggling to put the pieces together.
No unique lineups or rotations with the likes of Barry and Assa playing together or going small and athletic without a big man for long stretches.
Coach is stubborn and old school in his game coaching. It looks great when players are making 10 to 12 threes a game … but otherwise it is not good.
Mark has a tough job at Bonas, but the toughest part is getting talented players to sign — not coaching them up or molding them into an A10 power. That is the mystery.

Here we go. Steve Curran? Dave Moore? Lucky for us the mental giants on here are very far removed from any decision makers. Schmidt has been and remains the best thing to ever happen to Bona basketball from 1980 on. Didn't think this board could get any dumber, but here we are.

I think a few things can be true at the same time. Schmidt is the best thing to happen to this program since 1980 hands down. No question. I think for many of us, around 04-06, we probably thought we’d never see Bona in the tournament ever again. He’s accomplished a lot. And I’m definitely not going to say his best years here are in the past. But you can’t argue the last two seasons have simply not been good enough and this is a team that’s about to lose 4 1,000-point scorers (who coincide with currently being 4 of our top 5 scorers). It’s going be really hard to find 2 A10 starting caliber guards for next season. Not saying it can’t be done, but next year is already an uphill battle after 2 really disappointing years. It’s a big off-season coming up for Schmidt and this program.

Watching the BONNIES reminds me of the Patriots under the last few years of BELICHECK. Both curmudgeons who have total control and are too stubborn to make changes because they are convinced that they are right and everybody else is wrong

FWIW, Steve Curran was the centerpiece of recruiting for Bona’s for the last decade… GM just knocked off a ranked opponent for the first time last night, and they did it with far less talent on the roster.
It probably isn’t quite the time for a coaching change, but there should be serious discussions between Joe and Mark this offseason, as the program has underachieved considerably as of late.

Curran's a solid assistant
If you're looking at a program enhancer and someone who can evolve with the times that is college basketball - I think you need to look at similar coaching talent as Gerry McNamara and Brian Earl. Not suggesting those guys - but of similar pedigree, playing style and success.

Not advocating for Curran at all... either of your two names would be great... we would definitely need someone who can deal with NIL as well... for $2mm/year, I think there would be quite a few options, and the cupboard here is most definitely not bare.

As far as I can see in the box scores Mark Schmidt has not played one second for Bonas this season......please stop with this nonsense, Mark coaches he does not play and does miss open threes either.
Many delusional posts here........Mark is best thing that has happened to Bonas over the last two decades......apparently no one is smart enough to remember the "great years" of Solomon, or DeCarli...........or Chapman...
The all time leader in Bona victories.......will take Mark over any one.........Go Bonas!!

Yep, let’s replace one of the best coaches in program history with Steve Curran, the 50+ year old who has never been a head coach and has barely gotten any interest to be one. Sometimes there is a reason for that. We need a new mix of players. I trust Schmidt to find them.
