Disappointment. The team is predicted to be top 12 on the nation. Returning the top scorer who averaged 23.7 ppg, another returnee had sat out a year and was now ready to play, he had averaged 21.9 ppg. The top scoring frosh was now eligible, he was one the greatest pure shooters I have ever seen. This was the nucleus, and I believed this was Top 3 in the nation caliber team.
Alas, talk about being an underperformed team, this was it. Finished 13-12. Team chemistry, the injury bug, inexperienced coaching, all were factors. Oh yea, we went to the postseason, the NCIT, the national Catholic Invitstional Tournament, we lost to Xavier.

I guess the sky stopped falling today.
Mark hates losing as much as anyone on this board. Talk of a coaching change is inane.

I love how one win seems to change everything… most of you here are roller coasters as much as the team.
I will always root harder than anyone for my Bonnies, but the victory today changes absolutely nothing about what MS has/hasn’t accomplished this season… if they win A-10s, then the foot will have been in my mouth… but until then, they are underachievers over the last three years.
For now, I’ll celebrate the season sweep of UMass… Go Bona’s!

The old Soviet Union teams never played their best in the Preliminary rounds. They always saved plays for the medal rounds and did quite well. Like the Soviets, we have to ask if Coach Schmidt is holding back the players and plans to unleash a new strategy for the A-10 Tournament? What is he saving? Coach Schmidt's teams always peak in March. This A-10 Tournament is going to be interesting. By the way, Dayton lost to Mason. The Tournament is going to be wide open, and Coach Schmidt knows it. Согласен с Вами товарищ, Шмидт начал свой путь к чемпионату Атлантической 10!

I’m kind of upset at myself for participating in this thread. I do think this season has been a slight disappointment. We now have 5 1,000 point scorers on the team. This team is talented and they showed it today. They also showed their resilience. I think the goal should be a 20 win season. Can’t turn your nose up at that.

Five 1,000-pt scorers without a ticket to the Big Dance would be embarrassing… all that said, I will be the first one to celebrate his 300th win if it comes on Tuesday… I couldn’t be more appreciative of what MS has done here… hoping he can fully turn this season around to be one that we all remember.

The year was 1962/63 The returning leading scorer was Miles Aiken, who was injured a good part of the year The other player who averaged 21.9 his sophomore year was Fred Crawford, who sat out the previous year due to tuberculosis The sophomore who in my view was the greatest pure shooter was Mike Rooney, he was part of the chemistry problem The coach was Larry Wiese, his 2nd in charge, too inexperienced to handle the multiple personalities of the players They finished the regular season 12-11 and went 1-1 in the 4 team tournament They underperformed more than any Bona team, at least vs my expectations.

Above describes my feelings of this team. "Embarrassing" is the wrong word, but if they fail to make the Big Dance it would be disappointing when you consider the high expectations of this team. Difficult to explain how the Bonnies can look like the best team in the A-10 and then lose by double digits to LaSalle with a 207 NET (2nd worse in A-10). I wonder if Schmidt's thick playbook (both offensively and defensively) is too much to learn in this day of the transfer portal? Difficult to create chemistry, while you are still thinking about running plays. Chemistry is enhanced when plays become automatic.

Of course Mark’s playbook is demanding for a transfer unless they sit out a year like Mobley, Adaway etc. It’s demanding for every player. I think Mark is trying to adapt to the new era of transfer-rich rosters but seemingly he has never cared about players who couldn’t handle his system. If they got PT, stayed or transferred. They seldom played.
Now he’s getting 1000-point scorers and other talented players who are given ample playing time but less learning/practice time. This could be why we are pounding the ball inside constantly. It’s simple and usually effective with Chad until the opposing coach takes it away.
To my recollection our offense has been at its best vs VCU, SJU and UMass this season (not including the crap OOC opponents) — many times in the second half. UMass and VCU are deep, athletic, physical teams. Why we struggled against Richmond and Duquesne is a mystery.
IMO our team is confidence and momentum based. Maybe it’s their personalities. Assa, Chad, Mika, Noel, Pride, etc. Kinda quiet and laid back. Pride is the only one who gets a bit fired up after he knocks down a couple threes like yesterday.
So if things do not start well it takes us a loooong time to reboot and rebound … and some games not at all. We might be the most inconsistent Bona team of the decade.
Lofton, Holmes, Adaway, Stockard, Adams, Mobley, Posley and other recent stars were emotional fireballs. On their worst days they would fight you for every rebound, loose ball and possession.
This group might have the talent to win the A10 but I’m concerned about their emotions and confidence level from game to game.
