It has been coming for 15 years, and instead of planning for it and having a good overall plan for schools to follow, the NCAA decided to ride the cash cow as long as they could, and now they look dumb trying to hide behind the shield of "we are amateurs". 15 years ago Ed O'Bannon filed his lawsuit regarding use of Image, etc. 10 years ago, the NCAA lost the case (And went the appeal route to try to stall the outcome of the court case). So 15 years ago, they knew change was coming, because the schools and the NCAA were ripping off athletes. And 10 years ago, they tried to buy more time. A Business that has that much warning, and chooses to ignore it or just milk their audience, will fail. Fortune 100 history is littered with companies like the NCAA (Kodak came up with the idea of digital photography, but chose to hide/bury it cause they made alot more $ with chemicals and film. Now they are about 1/20 of their original size and stock value).
For the revenue sports, NCAA lost their amateur allure years ago. For most athletes in the Power 5/6, an education for revenue sports is not seen as a benefit for most athletes. As stated in another article, NIL stands for "Now It is Legal". even under the great UCLA dynasty there were questions about funding to BB players. -look up Sam Gilbert. John Wooden was a great coach, with $$ behind him. Top players who played in the revenue sports were getting some compensation for decades.
So as discussed in a seperate thread, and I have stated starting a few years ago - the Big 5/6/7 will leave the NCAAs. They do not need the NCAAs. These school teams will now be recognized for what they are - "minor league teams" with OSU, or Alabama, or whoever, etched on their jerseys. The players will be very loosely connected to the school, but not in the realm of being student athletes. Did you see the article where Deion Sanders son physically went to class for the first time ever? Of course with a video crew in tow.
If you are a fan of the Big School football - in my mind you are just cheering for Saturday Football - just a different league than the NFL. Tradition? Please. Student Athletes? Every school will brag about the 5% or so they have on each team - that is why they love walk ons - they raise the GPA. Be careful about buying that player's jersey - they might not be there by the end of the season, they just might sit out say the bowl game or NIT (ouch) and just wait for Portal to open up and a bigger paycheck.
So lets just hurry this process up. Split off and see ya big schools. Other schools (like SBU) will stay in the NCAA (we need some type of umbrella organization) and the playing field will be alot more level, players may stay more than one or two years, and a revised version of Tradition will carry on with these schools.
I will step off my "soap box" now

Breaking. AJ Storr Wisconsin 6’7” star guard to get $1M to transfer to Kansas. Like I may have said it is all about $$$$ now. Rick Pitino said earlier that the NIL needs a cap. Of course the cap will still keep small schools from competing. Players chasing $$ not an education. Our next AD will need to a double major in politics and high finance. No need to have a $2M coach. I would not be surprised to hear Schmidt retiring shortly.

The coach doesn’t matter if he can’t develop his players and they can’t learn his playbook.

NCAA had the option to do right by the student athletes, but decided to keep enriching themselves. Coaches and ADs could have pushed for this, but it would have cut into their salary.

The coach doesn’t matter if he can’t develop his players and they can’t learn his playbook. I am a fan of Coach, but this is an interesting point, and like Agoo pointed out, maybe a turning point in Coach's salary. Here is a "Twizzler moment" to ponder. Would Bonas be more successful if the Coach's salary was not $2M, but $1M and the other million funding player "salaries"? Say 5 players making $150K each, and 5 players making $40K each, etc. The quality of the players would (probably) improve, keep the playbook learnable in one year, and lets see what happens. I remember early in my business career working with a company where the top salesmen made as much as the owners (I knew this, the salesmen did not). I asked the owners why (cause i was really inexperienced at that time). They said without the sales, they as owners would make less $$. Same idea here - better players can be bought hopefully leading to more success on the court.

This NIL corruption disaster is really the death knell of mid major college sports............schools with huge bases of extremely wealthy donors will completely dominate the D1 collegiate sports landscape.........
The mid majors need to unite and fight or perish...................there is no alternative here, and no hiding the facts. College athletes demanding $1M to sign up effectively eliminates 99% of the mid major programs from competition.

All of this disgusts me. I stopped watching pro sports and all I had left was Bona basketball. I am considering not watching mbb. Why pay a college basketball player, they don't deserve it, they are lucky they are getting a free education. Most probably don't even know how to manage money. I will go back watching high school sports. We are losing sight of who we are. We are supporters to enrich the university and make better students. Paying a player who will leave in a year isn't helping the student nor the university.
Listening to Mr Noel Brown speak, I admire and respect him. There is hope for humanity.

I am also very impressed with NOEL. The kid is a hard worker and a good example for the new guys to follow. I am also worried that Coach's days are numbered with the current college hoop environment.
The NCAA needs some stricter guidelines for transfers and the portal for sure - just not sure how you put that Genie back in the bottle. 1 rule should be that players must sit out a year when transferring UNLESS the coach is leaving (either on his own for a new OP, or if canned by the school). No hardship BS - etc anymore as these kids are being paid. Any NIL money for transfers is to be held by the new school until he plays his 1st game. Schools need to have some coverage for their part in all of this mess, and players need some accountability ... I know I sound like "Get off my lawn" guy - but if it continues to be the wild wild west - college hoops as we know it (for mid-majors) will soon perish.

The NCAA is not relevant to the large schools anymore. The money is driving collegiate sports today especially in the major sports like football and basketball.

We get players from Putnam Science which is one of many feeders to major college basketball programs. The AAU has been scamming kids for years as a league to improve your skills to possibly get a college scholarship. It is funded by parents who get duped into thinking their kid will develop and get exposure. Bottom line is the coaches are showcasing a select few. Education is on the back burner. I feel bad because a lot of inner city kids are not getting proper guidance.

The NCAA just waived the last transfer rule.
So, no more waiting periods. Athletes are free to transfer yearly if they wish. They may not transfer in season though.
It really complete free agency, and complete chaos.
That and the NIL cash scam spell the end of D1 athletics as we know it, especially for mid major programs. Its now just the lower level of pro sports, no loyalty, no team spirit, just cold cash.
College sport will now really only exist on the club level. So Bonas is now rich with their outstanding men's and women's rugby teams....long may they win National Championships!!
