Hitting the Portal does not necessarily mean the player is leaving. They may realize their worth is not even worth leaving. We will see but this portal BS is ruining college basketball and making it way less interesting. Alumni trying to follow their team with revolving doors is not helping college basketball. Oh well. However, this year's players are probably not finding a lot of good teams coming after them.

The percent of basketball players in the portal who return to their teams is very small. Many more players get left out in the cold (no offers) or enroll in JUCO programs than go back to their previous teams. In football half the portal entrants do not sign with another D1 program. Coaches have the right to reject any player who asks to return.

Bigcat, I don't like the whole portal thing. I guess SBU will have a new look next year b/c of the portal. I hope they pick up some smart consistent scorers.

Enjoy two basic trends now and cherish them -
- Mark Schmidt as Head Coach.......we at Bonas will never see the likes of him again for at least two generations
- Mid Major D1 MBB and other athletics - D1 competition for mid major schools like Bonas in doomed, so enjoy our programs while you can. The free transfer portal much like free agency, when coupled with fully paid D1 athletes (in addition to NIL, monthly stipends, and free tuition and room and board) will make it unaffordable for mid major schools to continue at the D1 level. This is the NCAA short term plan too, pushed by the dominant power five schools (now power six). They want mid majors out of the competition.........do you really think they want the possibility of Bonas knocking off Kentucky? Of course not ! The future will see Bonas playing mid majors only, and competing for some IAA ranking, kind of like the Small College Rankings of the 1940's and 1950's.
Rejoice and give thanks, the future will be far different..............PTL

I hate to agree with Skeller6 on doom and gloom of mid majors fate. If the landscape/rules do not change soon- above post will reality... Hope is not a strategy but "I HOPE" it changes....The NCAA Tourney with zero mid majors competing and knocking off powerhouse teams... "Cinderella Teams- will be a thing of the past" ... That's ok they can fill in Cinderella with a bottom cellar dweller P-6 Team that identifies as Cinderella"...Whoops sorry no politics' here GO BONA's FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You do realize not every A10 program goes through the same churn as we do right? Most team (A10 included) aren't bringing in 8-10 new players every two years. Even if you do, it doesn't mean you can't compete. Utah State lost their ENTIRE roster last offseason and they are back in the tourney this year with a new head coach. Didn't we have two cinderella teams in the final four just last year? Let's relax just a bit. Schmidt is a great coach, but most of his success was pre portal. He's not the only coach that can have success here. He had a losing record prior to joining SBU.

If we have to use the portal, only take players transferred from the ACC, B1G, Big XII, and SEC. Taking players from the NEC, MAC, or MAAC is self defeating. They should all have at least two years of eligibility left. There is a lot of untapped talent in the leagues mentioned.

Since people still don’t get it: 2 of our best guards of all time transferred from the NEC and MAC. The team-changing forward who took us from average team to the big dance was from the MAC. Howd our recent memory ACC (Pitt and Syracuse) transfers work out? You can’t just ignore talented players from lower leagues.

The two guards you mention were from a previous era... ie. you had to sit out a year. Now they are free agents every year it is insane. Anyone transferring up is looking for the top opportunity they can get. So they have a good season they transfer up here to us, they probably transfer up again after the season. Whereas a player from a P6 conference transferring "down" to the A10 is more likely to stick around, having seen what that life is like and how nicely he fits at St. Bonaventure

What?! Every player is different and should be evaluated. HOWEVA, players transferring down from P5 schools rarely pan out. Look at the 2 studs from Pitt that landed here. Despite the opinions of the astute talent evaluators on this board both had serious short comings in their games. Both transferred down further and had moderate success at best. Best results are found when a guy proves something at a lower conference and comes to SBU hungry to succeed at the A10 level. Even better results are realized when that attitude is confirmed by staff when player visits and any caveats on a player are fully vetted.

Well Duquesne just beat our asses with a big man that transferred down (Mahoric). The best player on our team (Adams-Woods) that got us there was a player that transferred down and 2 of the 3 best players for the best team in the league - Dayton - (Santos & Elvis) are transfer-down players but yeah, crazy talk!

Regarding Luc - I saw a player who was too quick for the offense that we played particularly with Venning - sometimes the flow just doesn't work. With a different offense he would have been much better. Believe he has the D1 level talent required just a shifting fit. Good luck in the future.

With a different offense he would have been much better. Believe he has the D1 level talent required just a shifting fit. Good luck in the future. I've seen a handful of Bona fans saying Luc wasn't A10 caliber and I disagree. Banks was an all-conference selection last year and he didn't exactly light the world on fire... he shot 36% from the floor, 34% from deep, grabbed 3.8 RPG while averaging 2.3 APG to 2.0 T.O. He averaged 15.4 PPG on 12.5 shots per game. Luc, according to many around here had a rough sophomore campaign and yet his year wasn't that bad. Luc shot 36% from the floor, 30% from deep, grabbed 3.4 RPG and also had nearly 2 steals per game. He also averaged 4.3 APG to 2.5 TO. He averaged 11.3 PPG on 11.0 shots per game. Big difference was Luc was in just his second D1 season and Banks was in his fourth. I wonder what his progression would have been like if he had played more than 8 MPG this season.
