This isn’t really that complicated. Schmidt wanted to play, but the team didn’t. How many players would we have that would have played? 2-3? No way SBU would participate in a tourney with less than 6-8 players available. No way Pride, MAW, Luc, Martinez, Evans or the other potential transfers would play in this tourney. Basically we would have been down to Banks, Flowers and

Sad commentary of our program. Everything I have read, and seen, this story is true. Wouldn't it be advantageous for players who are contemplating hitting the portal to participate in the NIT to showcase their skills? This NIT decision on part of the Bonnies and the NIL portal is making me less and less interested in college sports. If there is no money in the NIT for the players they probably just don't want to participate. Disgusted here.

You represent your university, and if you are given an invite to the NIT, you take it! As a mid-major, Bona cannot be in the business of turning down NIT bids...EVER.

The athletic department has to respond to this. You can’t “no comment” your way outta this.

Wow, I just keep shaking my head. Has to be internal strife that we are not privy to. Bona has always been a supporter of the NIT. This makes no sense.

Does a single person actually wait and see about a story anymore before having to post their immediate opinion about it?

ESPN getting the graphic wrong is more believable than us turning down an NIT bid.
How many available players would we have? Barry, Luc, Melian in the portal. Chad/Noel were both banged up.
I don’t know. Hopefully we get some answers on Wednesday.

NO point in going for experience when 3 key players are graduating and 3 players or more are hitting the portal. If the majority of the team was coming back then it would be worth it.

There is no longer any loyalty. Like a hobo jumping the next train. Sort of a different twist on what Bona faithful like to say: "It's not about the destination, but the journey."

Whatever the reason and whatever “justification” one wants to rationalize, this decision (if made by the players) calls into question how motivated this group ( I just can’t call them a “team”) was throughout the season. The fans deserved more. They deserved better. Sad day for the Bona family.

The fans deserved more. They deserved better. Sad day for the Bona family. three are graduating and three hit the portal. There is no point continuing for experience. Recruiting takes priority. It's not that sad of day. The staff has a lot of work to do and playing in the NIT would interfere.

I will wait to see this verified by the university before making conclusions or rendering judgement. Until then, I don't think graduating seniors or those who entered the portal would be a factor in such a decision. Any player wanting to transfer would have waited until the season was completely over before announcing. Additional play in the NIT would have only given them more exposure, a chance to add to their stats, and simply compete. The graduating seniors are still on the team and available for post season play.
The team played 'better' in the A10 compared with the end of the season. Maybe they were beaten up... but we had the numbers and players want to play.

There is no point in playing when you are losing 4-5 key players. Recruiting is the number one priority. Playing in the NiT would delay recruiting. also, would you really like to see this team play again??? They played bad the last 6 games. Anyway, I'm not trying to get into a debate but when 3 starters and some contributors are leaving what's the point of playing the NIT other than end of season tourney experience? It doesn't hurt or help but recruiting is more important.

You certainly don't have to agree with him, but below is a comment from Mice Vaccaro (taken from a Facebook thread):
Folks, it’s 2024. There are two realities now: 1. The NIT isn’t the NIT anymore. It isn’t played at the Garden and it has little to do with the event as it existed even two years ago. 2. The larger reality is this: the NCAA transfer portal opened up Monday. So not only would we have fielded a diminished team since three guys are already in there, the coaching staff needs to replace an entire team. All of their energy needs to be used on that, not playing the basketball equivalent of the Liberty Bowl. We don't have to like the new world of college basketball — I for one do not — but if this is where we live you have to make the most of it.
